The Times They Are A-Changin...

As the great Bob Dylan once said. How does this apply to you, an internet marketer? Simple really.

Nothing stays the same forever. Just ask all the people who made thousands of dollars from Google Adsense in 05/06.

Doesn't mean that method is dead either, so don't start that! It just changed. It evolved. Did you? Hope so.

Ezine got hit hard with Panda. Hope you didn't have all your eggs in that basket. Amazon just shut down all of you California affiliates. Didn't see that one coming? Well you should have. Nothing lasts forever.

What is your plan if Google decides to slap your site? I assure you, coming on a message board and complaining isn't going to fix it. But you know what will get you by while you figure things out? Another traffic generation method.

Diversification is completely understated, especially for the little guy. If you don't have the resources to survive when the perfect storm hits, then you failed to plan--which gives you no excuse when you get knocked out.

Google will change. Facebook will evolve. Twitter may not even exist in three years. Myspace is being renewed. Plenty of Fish could be replaced by niche dating sites, that cater more to people's specific personality traits.

Were you promoting poker last year? I bet your struggling now. What did you have in your back pocket that you could rely on while the industry crumbled to pieces.

Bottom line of this post is that you must evolve, you must change, and you must diversify your income streams if you want to be in this industry for the long haul. I've only been involved with IM for about three years and the landscape looks completely different today than it did when I first started.

The sky is ALWAYS falling around you. I hope you built a tough shed to weather the storm.

Isn't the whole internet changing not just how we make money online?

It's become a much more social internet with many things coming into play. I kinda like where it's all going actually!

I welcome the change. We live in very exciting times. I have been thinking all week on how I can diversify and make more/different income streams work.

Well you are right of course. Within a decade i doubt very much people will use the internet through browsers or search with sites like Google like we do today. In fact the way we consume information on the internet is already dying... the traditional way of doing IM will be gone in the next few years, the question is - how and where will it go...

desktop computer, monitor, broswer, mouse, keyboard, sign up form will all be words of the past very soon.

Don't look to MAKE money - look to HELP people and you will make all the money you can ever want.

Exactly. Everything will change. How we market today will be a shadow of its former self in five years. New methods will arise, based on old methods of course, and we will push forward into the future.

It's those who fail to plan, evolve and adapt that are left in the dark. I think history proves that.

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.

It'll go to artificial intelligence and we'll all get sucked into the matrix.

(I laugh, but honestly kind of wonder how far off AI really is...)

My shed is built on the foundation of solid content that I poured myself.

My site does not rely on facebook, twitter, myspace. All of my content is original and I try to make my content good quality.

    • I 100% with diversity.

I always wonder though, how do you guys think people will find information without search engines in the future?

This is where sites like youtube, amazon and cnet come into play.

Lets say I am looking for a new flashlight, I will either go to youtube and watch the video reviews, or I will go to amazon and read the user reviews.

I a site owner plays their cards right, they can tap into the people looking for information on amazon and youtube.

More people need to stop writing content for the search engines and start writing it for people. The web is becoming more and more social everyday. I think what made a site rank high yesterday will not matter tomorrow. What is going to matter is what content people like most, and that is what will rank high in the future.

This is a great post and soooo true!

One of the worst mistakes I made early on was not realizing that everything will change, I built a rigid business that did not weather the changes and, even worse, didn't keep myself up to date with the changes. That set me back a lot!

It's smart to build a business for the long term, but dont be too "set in your ways" about what that business is or how you promote it becasue the only thing that is certain is change.

I saw Michael Dell on the news recently saying something similar to this. The news guy asked him about jobs. Michael said it's not a jobs problem, but a skills problem. Opportunity is there for those willing to change and evolve and get the skills needed to be of valuable service to others. But to do that you must indeed continue to change and evolve yourself!

Change makes the world go around but as much as things change the art of selling will never change.

Oh I definitely agree, however, with change comes restrictions, which can put a damper on those big business plans you had in a hurry. It's having a contingency, waiting in the wings to keep you afloat while you figure things out.

Sometimes its something as simple as a site slap. Other times an entire industry crumbles to pieces and your left with nothing to promote. It's a tough gig no doubt, but that comes with running your own business--after all that's what we are all here for right?

Agreed, in the world of business you have to compete with everybody, and on the internet you have to compete with everybody who has $8 for a domain registration and $5 per month for hosting. Marketers should always be prepared for the unexpected.

As things change the Art may need a little tweaking. And diversification is important. I've heard several people talk about how changes basically wiped them out.

That's why i come on here to keep up with the current trends. The more things change the more they stay the same. Like you said diversification is key, in any investment, wheter it be real estate, stocks and bonds, as well as the internet marketing scence.

    Two phrases I go by:

"What's old is new again" and

    "Take the road less traveled".

That has done well for me over the years.

I've always tried to stress, to people that read my blog and buy from my business, to build an asset - not just using a quick strategy.

Content is really the end all be all of creating a sustainable online income. You can use content for your site, convert it to video, make podcasts, fuel your email marketing letters and have something to share with people.

You can't really expect the vapid methods from yesteryear to really work because they were so full of fluff that they didn't have any way they would hang around.

Work on real assets by doing real work and you're going to strive while a lot of people start losing it all.
