Article Marketing Vs Press Release Marketing: the difference?

Hi, all.

What is the difference between Article Marketing and Press Release Marketing?

Article Marketing is the old and true method of generating back-links.(maybe traffic too) some put articles on their own site than use social bookmarking, and others spin multiple versions to post on numerous article sites. Although there seem to be some debate whether having the same article on both your personal blog and article website has negative effect on ranking.(does it count as duplicate content and therefore punished)

Press Release Marketing tends to focus on being in the tiny news section on the first page of the search results. Although, it's been hailed as an easier and faster way to get on page 1 of a search, I have some reservation. As press releases get included in the tiny news section, my press releases could be pushed out really fast(in seconds) by the newer press releases or legitimate news stories. There doesn't seem to be much of an upside, especially if the target keyword is even remotely competitive.

Do Articles and Press Releases get treated differently in terms of ranking? They both have backlinks. But are backlinks from articles and press releases equal?

Eager to hear your thoughts.

Thank you

All things being equal, backlinks from press releases weigh more compared to backlink from an article.

You're going to get a million opinions on the differences on both of them. The key is that you should use both as part of an overall marketing and publicity strategy.

Press releases can appear both in the news section as well as the organic listings of engines and I have found that with backlinking they can stay longer in organic listings. Prlog used to be very good in organic but did get hit by panda, however with backlinking and less competitive words it still can work. The top article directories also were hit hard as well. Some people do browse the news section daily in google and yahoo so if you have a catchy headline it can be a very good source of traffic. With either press releases or articles, a number of sites can add your writing to their site and this can be a good source of both backlinks and traffic.

        "Better Results" compared to what?

By your own admission, you have only used one of the two described methods, so how can you judge one "better" than the other, if you have not used the other at all?

Press releases are bound with a topic and along with timing and place which is indeed not a theme based. But of course a subject line is followed. Talking about article marketing then it is a complete one themed issue which has been described according to the authors point if view and comes in detail. And both are posted in their respective places. Clearing about the basic differences say that both are marketing tools, in Article Marketing articles helps with branding you and your company as a name in the web market through which you can drive traffic directly if readers like it. On the other hand Press Releases are something which announces a newsworthy occasion. Web masters spread to news websites, ad agencies, blogs, and social networking sites.

I usually get a lot more hits from press releases- just remember that they're a different format than articles.

The cool thing about them is you can put your link anywhere :-)

Press releases tend to get syndicated by other, more permanent news outlets... which usually have higher PR, get more targeted traffic, and use more content. It's a win/win/win.

I agree with those who advise you to do both.

One thing that most people don't know is that old or outdated press releases - even those several years old - can bring you a significant amount of traffic, day in and day out. Also, in going over my traffic logs I see that people who come to my site after having read a press release tend to stay at least a half an hour, on average - far longer than those who are doing a Google search.

You'll generally get more backlinks from a press release than from an article, if only because they're syndicated. Press releases are also, from my experience, much more difficult to write. It's not unusual to spend over $100 for a solid press release. I know I can pump out articles like nobody's business, but the art of writing a good press release continues to elude me.

From a Google standpoint, I think both are about equal in their raw benefits. You can syndicate your articles yourself in order to receive a large number of backlinks per single article. A high-end press release service combined with a sick press release, though, can get you on Yahoo news and whatnot. That'll give you a big rankings boost.

Press Releases generally get spread around a lot more and can even be picked up by journalists that end up writing about your business.

Article Marketing is a bit more forward and, from my experience, doesn't seem to spread around as easily.

Is it really okay to syndicate press releases every day like articles? I can't think of a downside but I have still hesitant about the idea. I also wonder if there is anything news worthy to write about everyday.

I think press releases are fantastic as long as you've a hungry buyers market and inform people about in a newsworthy way. Articles can be press releases, of course, a little re-structure on the message will be due. Bottom line, they will keep working for getting targeted traffic no matter if Google hates it for SEO in 2099.

Article marketing, what can I say. Whether Google likes it, finds it worth it or not, they'll keep eating one way links for years thanks to article marketing. My article marketing campaigns are to drive me targeted traffic and get me ideal clients. Ja, of course, the second perk being, higher rankings in SERPs! No matter what Google, Yahoo, MSN say about it in the next 10 years...there's no logical business sense to penalize one way links, just imagine if a search engine said let's penalize a one way link for being in a place it shouldn't be! Since 2005 for me and many others, Google will keep filtering the sites once they find the same content, but by the time they do that my sites will be close to the top rankings, if not #1 in their search results - without counting the next round of articles that are new and being submitted for the same purpose. So article marketing will keep being king for getting fast traffic and easy search engine rankings. It's just so simple.

Article marketing for traffic and one way links, my #1 preference as you might see

The difference I suppose lay in what you want from it. If it's merely a backlink then, I suppose they may be the same or similar since a backlink is a backlink is a backlink.

I know someone recently who started with a list of ~200. Did a press release and within a couple weeks his list is now ~1000 - all targeted too.

So really, I think the first thing to decide is, what are you trying to achieve?

Backlinks, ranking, and traffic. Easy to say, harder to do.

I was wondering if press release backlinks counts more than article backlinks.
Also if there is any downside to releasing press releases as often as you do articles(1-2 a day)

i would prefer article marketing to get back links. below are the reasons why i will prefer article distribution.
    1) you can easily get a list of high PR Article distribution sites at web.
    2) Its easy to get articles approved from websites as compared to Press releases i.e from hotfrog.co.uk or you have to be a premium member or your press release must be in proper Press Release Format.
    3) Article Marketing is effective in long term. As there are regular visitor of article sites likes ezinearticles. com
    4) its takes more time for your article to loss in content Universe as compared to press release in google results.
    5) Both Techniques are better but the matter is how you utilize from it i.e if use High PR Press release sites then its better as compared to you are submitting content to low PR article distribution sites because in the end you are doing all this for Getting PR. You can only Increase your PR in minimum time by getting back links from High PR sites.

One thing that I have noticed about Press Releases is that they tend to appear in Google much more quickly than other articles sources, but they also have a much quicker drop off rate. I would say to keep a few press releases at about a week old while you are building your other SEO strategies up, so you can always have a few, fresh, relatively better links actively going toward your site. However, keep in mind that Google has ben diminishing the power of article and PR links for some time now.

You are talking about 2 totally different marketing strategies because article marketing is not about mass submission of junk spun articles to junk article directories. Article marketing goes far beyond what most think.

Press releases should contain newsworthy information and are in no way written the same way articles are.

Press releases are the kind of articles that end up in newspapers. They're usually discussing a new product, a change in headquarters, an expansion of workforce, etc. They generally get picked up by business publications and similar news organizations.

Article marketing is completely different. Articles are written on just about any topic that's related to the topic of the author's site. They are then submitted to article directories and reprinted by other blogs or websites as filler content. The author benefits because of the links back to their website or affiliate product links they include.

THis is a great question and does need to be addressed

We use 1 PR web press release a week now, outsourced to a retired journalist and is working wonders for us.

The thing is you see far too many times, people just write and article and post it up, spend the $80 on PRWeb then cuss and curse that press release marketing sucks.

This is not only a waste of money, but not how you conduct proper press release marketing.

Press release marketing means you should be sending something that is newsworthy out in the market place, to attract, and get peoples ears sticking out and listening. Get them thinking, they need to go over and check out your site *(which should be a squeeze page)

By just paying your money and sending them to a crappy article that was spun or something you are just blasting people with content. WRONG WAY TO DO THINGS!

YOu need something strong, a call to action, or something that is interesting and might be something others would want to pass on their friends. Add a catch headline and do not go overboard, as a press release is not just a medium to put your boring ass sales page in there, it is an avenue to attract visitors and buyers to your site, so always remember that. And do things properly.

Press releases are supposed to be more effective when it comes to providing you with backlinks as opposed to article marketing. This may be due to the reason that press releases speak volumes about the product alone and nothing else.

Press releases live FOR EVER so dont write rubbish ones. Ive only done a few & they still pop up on google...and make me cringe. Its a damned if you do, damned if you dont thing - a press release on a good site is worth a lot BUT can seriously affect your reputation if its rubbish, or you can put it where it will never be seen & quality doesnt matter. They are worth getting professionally written too. Far more powerful than articles IMHO, but as everyone has said you should do both.

Press Releases can "get ink" (printed in magazines & newspapers) and get "air" (your product or website broadcast on tv news) resulting in tens of millions of people seeing your product/website in a very small short of time.

So it's safe to say that press releases can get WAY more exposure than virtually any other form or marketing. But only if you really know what you are doing.

There are several very good step-by-step how-to guides
covering press release marketing. (check out my e-sig below)

Both methods work prretty well, but as I said in other threads, they are just part of thr link building mixt. In fact, SENuke comes with PR and artiicle modules that will make your life easier. And another advice is that you should stop about thinking that top ranking in Google is the only option to succeed online. For instancce, paying $300 for a PR release in PRweb.com will give you a lot of exposure.
