Hey everybody,

I intend to make a site using weebly. I don't have my own domain, so I'll be using their subdomain feature(and before you ask, buying a domain isn't possible for me right now).

Using this feature will make the domain look like "mysite.weebly.com". I was considering using a url masking service, but after some research I've found that would kill SEO for the site.

So my question is this, how much of a deterrent would the ".weebly" part of the domain be to someone searching on google(and yeah, I know this isn't an issue unless I can get ranked high enough to be found, lol)? I imagine this varies from person to person, but I'd like another opinion on that.

Anyways, I appreciate any advice you can give.

If buying a $1 .info domain-name from GoDaddy isn't possible for you right now, maybe a free one from .tk would be better, then? For myself, I''d hold on until I came up with $1, somehow, though ...

Yes; I agree with you: it varies from person to person. But it doesn't really matter all that much what the answer to this question is, because it just isn't a very good question. Sorry.

If you're able to set up a business on Weebly, you must be able to find a way to have someone buy you a $1 domain-name?

You want to wait until you can afford a domain, you might watch ebay for domains for sale. I would recommend a .com, so you might need to go find a lawn to mow, do a post on fiverr, imgigz or one of the others. I think even go daddy takes paypal now.

I am pretty sure google will consider any SEO you do to be for weebly and not the subdomain. You are better off getting a hosted account. You didn't say what kind of site you were making. Many hosted accounts are cheap these days and usually include cpanel and fantastico with website building software, wordpress, shopping carts, etc.

      Ouch, harsh.

I was unaware of the $1 .info domain and the .tk domain. I guess I'll look into those.

Even so, it's not so much lack of funds as it is not having a way to use them. No credit card, nothing in paypal, and unable to move anything into paypal.

google will consider any SEO you do to be for weebly
I don't know, I've seen some .weebly sites on the first page before.

You didn't say what kind of site you were making.
I intend to make it a review site, though I'm not 100% decided on the niche just yet. All I know for sure is it will NOT be money making products, lol.

        Well, blunt - but honest.

Sorry if it came across harshly.

Yes, I appreciate that lack of $1 isn't anyone's problem in this regard. It's always "administrative/convenience factors". But if you open an account at GoDaddy (costs nothing), all you have to do is find someone to buy you a $1 domain-name there, and transfer it into your account, and you're off and running.

If you want a .com name, they're about $8 - $10 or whatever, but you can perhaps write an article or two for someone, or provide some other online service worth $10 for someone, to get started?

I'm just suggesting that this can't be an insuperable problem, if you have the skills to build a business in the first place?

I don't think there's anything wrong with hosting at Weebly at all - I use it myself for some of my sites. When you can afford to, later, you can always upgrade to Weebly Pro and get rid of their advertising button. Or if you want to start of with your own free, self-hosted Wordpress blog, you can always use the free hosting at byethost.com (it's professional, reliable, recommended by many, advertising-free, etc. etc.). No credit-card/PayPal needed.

But Weebly isn't a bad idea, really. Just avoid the mistake of starting with Blogger/Squidoo, which you can never own or control yourself.

Well I have all the information I could possibly want, but whether or not I can put it to use remains to be seen, lol.

I've read several horror stories about Blogger. People set up a site, everything running smoothly, then disappears like it was never there. As for Squidoo, I didn't really see it as being a good base of operations.

Byethost sounds interesting, so I'll look into that.

          Thanks for the advice.

I've had the "no credit card, no paypal funds" issue before. I solved it by getting a Walmart money card. It works just like a credit card without needing to qualify for it. You give them cash and they stick it on a visa authorized credit card for you. It costs $3 to make a deposit, but if you throw $20 on there, it can last you a good long while with cheap domains. You can also use it for direct deposit from affiliate networks too (no charge). I've been really pleased with it for the last several months.

Oh, and don't take Alexa's words too sharply. She has a reputation on the forums for not only being a brilliant marketer, but for calling things exactly like she sees it. Listen to what she says!

Definitely get your own domain if you hope to have any credibility.

Go offer some services (article writing, social bookmarking etc) or do 2 fiverr gigs and go get a proper .com domain if you are serious about this business.
