Is article marketing going down the drain? What are you doing to supplement the fact that Google is gradually discounting article marketing?

Check out this video by Matt Cutts, and why he's advocating "editorial links".

What do you think?

    What do I think? ...nothing.

Article marketing does work to some degree and will continue to work in the future.

Blasting the same article to many article sites never really worked.

If you write a top quality article and get it published on a relevant site as a guest post, you are doing article marketing. That type does work and will continue to work.

The trend may be going down but I think article marketing still works, maybe just not as much as before panda, but still a good seo practice. If the article gets picked up by other sites from the article directory and posted on their sites it won't give you much credit because of the duplicate content I think that's more what he was leaning toward in the video.

I said this in this forum months ago and I'll say it again (thanks for affirming this Matt):

Article Marketers are the bottom of the barrell when it comes to SEO. It's old, non innovative and the easy way out.

Do the best Article Marketers make money? Sure they do. Does that make it right? Ummmm no.

If you are up and coming in the SEO field and are wondering if this is something you should get heavily involved in.....as Matt said...."I would lean awaaaaay from that"

Good Unique article writing will never go down the drain so long as people read.

Videos definitely smacked article writing, I think that too will pass away. Who knows what is next.

But really! some of the articles that have been spun and are being spun need to go anyway.

As an author of good unique article content...I am glad to see the spinning going down.... it was a scam from the start!

I would suggest that you are backwards on this.

SEOers are the bottom of the barrel when it comes to article marketing.

Article marketing never had a bad reputation until the SEOers discovered that they could use it for cheap links.

There's two or more completely different ways to look at it.

    1. Using article marketing for backlinks, which should be a small part of SEO strategy. In fact, you can get along without it, just fine.

    2. Using article marketing for traffic or for quick rankings or for syndication, etc.

I guess number 2 has more than one thing, but anyway. When I've always thought of article marketing it's always been along the lines of using it for traffic in and of itself, or getting some high clickthrough rates to get to my landing pages, etc.

I've used it with varying success but am no expert article marketers.

The best article marketers get tons of traffic through syndication, guest blogging and other ways, but to get their secrets and know exactly how to do it I've never seen any great information on it in the open forum. Might be there, just haven't seen it.

It's no secret at all. Think of newspaper article syndication; journalists have their articles in hundreds or thousands of newspapers and online outlets. This is the exact principle and has been used for over two centuries. Only recently has this powerful marketing technique been spun into an untenable system listed as #1, which is really the only part that is going down the drain. Do a forum search for "Article Syndication".

Article marketing is always good if you write quality and useful content.

What happens if some of your articles are sooooo good that are picked up by a few tens of other websites? Ok let's say that those links have no weight for Google, but they have for Yahoo (I don't know why people forget about Yahoo, and Bing, and Ask, to mention a few).

Besides, when people reprint your articles you are getting visitors through those links to your website, or sales pages, or squeeze pages.

I get really good traffic that way

The problem is people are lazy, that's it. People don't like to work, people want everything for free. In this IM world, if you want to be successful you can do one of two thinks:

      1. Outsource
      2. Work like a donkey for hours everyday doing everything yourself.

And do you want to know why 99% of people fail in IM? They don't want to outsource because that costs a lot of money, but they don't want to work hard either!!! And you see that all over the forum.

      This is just my opinion

      Saludos

I think article marketing (the spinning version) is very time consuming. My strategy is to just write blog posts full of great content and then syndicate that out to other sites. My articles have appeared on Yahoo etc..

In my opinion, guest blogging on an influential blog will get you further than article marketing. But make sure the article is unique and original and you're not going to send it out to a bunch of other bloggers once it's been published on one site.

I have never had a lot of success with article marketing, and personally I think it is a waste of my time and money. As is typical with many things, I have seen great reviews for article marketing and such things as, how to get 69% click through rates with article marketing, and on and on. I have not had even low click through rates for other than a few articles. And the links have not done me a whole lot of good for the hundreds of articles that I have pumped out to the internet.

Write quality content that actually addresses problems, causes, etc.,
that people care about, and articles work beautifully.

Using them purely for SEO is a losing battle in that the search
engines have to keep adjust their algorithm to keep their
    results meaningful.

Use articles to build backlinks, but use them more to educate,
entertain, inform, fascinate, brand you as an expert, and even
    to sell products directly.

You still want a lot of your CONTENT out there, and articles
    continue to work for me,

I think I see at least one of these 'article marketing is dead' flavour threads every other day. Fortunately I put about as much stock in it as I did the Y2K hysteria over the global digital meltdown in 2000 that never occurred.

Which is a good thing. Since my marketing strategy is based primarily on article marketing.

Here's a more likely prediction: that I'll see this exact same theme pop up from another member, under a slightly different title. In about 2 days.

I have noticed with dismay that many people including some Gurus are saying that article marketing is dead or going down the drain! Article marketing is getting better than ever for those who know what they're doing. In the past we would just write an article, publish publish it and wait for it to appear in the front page of the search engines. Today, doing well with articles requires a lot more know how and it makes the all thing more interesting and profitable.
Every article published should be treated like a brand new website. It needs to be promoted vigorously...

Wow! So many great comments and suggestions. :-)

You guys are definitely talking from experience.

Personally, I've only published over 800 articles on a HANDFUL(less than 5) of article directories.

The largest benefit that I've derived from ezinearticles.com, buzzle.com, goarticles.com, and articledashboard.com is simply residual traffic. However, this residual traffic is only a trickle when compared to targeted traffic from Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

Unfortunately, it's somewhat difficult to track traffic from article directories to actual conversions on the targeted website or landing page.

Is everyone using Analytics to track online conversions?

Quality content will NEVER be discounted by google. If your article marketing is filling some words in between keyword phrases so you can show your links...that's marketing but likely not good content.

The problem people often have with "article marketing" is they focus on the marketing...and forget about the article part.

Very true - and very neatly put.

And the problem many successful article marketers have with forum threads asking whether article marketing is going down the drain is that typically the majority of their participants are using the words "article marketing" as a euphemistic abbreviation for "trying to use article directories for their own traffic and/or for their own backlinks" (i.e. something very different from what "article marketing" really means, and merely an extremely limited sort of "article marketing" which actually went down the drain a long time before the so-called "Panda update" was widely credited with pouring away all its value).

The fundamental question typically left unaddressed in such discussions is whether one wants a potential customer (who finds an article by inputting one of its keywords into a search engine as his search terms) to find the article in an article directory or on one's own site.

It's a question which (once asked) we can all answer for ourselves.

For myself, I have typically about a 20% click-through rate from an article directory to my own site, or - to express that in simple English rather than in marketing jargon - I lose 80% of those people before they ever get to my site, so for me it's a very easy question to answer.

I have about 1,350 articles in Ezine Articles (all of which were originally published and indexed on one of my own sites prior to submission there), and the last thing I'd want is for a potential customer to find those copies rather than the ones on my own sites (which - thankfully, by very easily arranging it that way - are the ones he'll actually find). I'm submitting them all to EZA to be found there by all the people (webmasters, ezine publishers, newsletter compilers) using EZA as a directory, i.e. searching there (not in Google) for content to syndicate. A directory is "where you look stuff up". Luckily for me, those people tend to know that that's why article directories exist and that's the demand they were created to supply.

The same thing I've always done: article marketing rather than article directory marketing. The "Panda update" has been very kind to article marketers, as so many of us have been saying here for a few months, now. With all those article directories swept off the front page of Google's SERP's it's getting easier all the time for us to rank the articles on our own sites.

Google isn't "discounting article marketing" at all. It's just found a way to repress the SEO value of article directories. Many article marketers aren't using them for their own traffic or for their own backlinks, though - that's hasn't exactly been a "strong business model" for a long time.

Besides using a pen name for each niche, I track each article placement with an unobtrusive ten digit alphanumeric code in the resource box, such as domain.com/?abcdefghij. Each syndicated outlet where I submit articles to is assigned a tracking code in that format. The tracking code is compared with Cpanel reports (click-through, time on page, etc) as a ratio of conversions of the order or optin landing pages. The AwStats analytics reporting tool is on most hosting providers, or similar reporting software is also available commercially.
