Social Bookmarking 101: How To Use The Power Of Social Bookmarking To It's Full Potential

Social bookmarking is a traffic generating tool which helps internet marketers get traffic and back links to their websites. You would definitely be missing out on traffic if you do not use social bookmarking to it's maximum potential.

Getting the most out of social bookmarking is fairly simple and you do not need to be a brain surgeon to understand it.

Register At Popular Social Bookmarking Sites

The very first thing to do when you want to start your social bookmarking traffic campaign is to sign up at the popular sites. Sign up at the ones that you know are legit and will not waste your time. Two of my favorites are Digg.com and Delicious.com - Both have proven to me that they are great uses of my time.

Once you have found a few social bookmarking sites that get lots of traffic such as the ones I just mentioned - start looking around those sites to get yourself familiarized with how they function.
  1. See what bookmarks are performing well.
  2. Check out the profiles of people that have high traffic bookmarks.
Update Your Profile

Before even submitting a site to a social bookmarking site make sure to update your profile. In your profile you are going to want describe yourself (ie. interests, expertise, or what kind of business you are in). This is important because:
  1. Users will see your profile.
  2. Users may contact you for advice or tips about your expertise or interests.
  3. When users feel comfortable with you then they will start to become regular visitors to your website.
Bookmark Your Website

This was the sole reason why you started social bookmarking anyway right? It is common sense to bookmark your own website. Upon bookmarking, you will be asked to tag your bookmark with keywords. Make sure to do this properly. Tagging formats differ from social bookmark to social bookmark.

If you are getting a tough time getting people to dig (or whatever social bookmark you decide to use) your pages ask your friends. More then likely you have a Twitter, Facebook or MySpace account with some friends. Ask them for help, in exchange for your help.

For The Traffic

Alright I know this is what you all have been waiting for... The way to get traffic from social bookmarking sites is to:
  1. Add friends
  2. Comment and vote on other peoples submissions
  3. Join the forums and discussions on the bookmarking sites.
  4. Once you have your site bookmarked, bookmark other peoples sites too. This will get you noticed within the community. People love givers, and it will definitely impact your credibility.
So... if you are one of those people who simply sign up at a social bookmarking site and social bookmark your page while never visiting the social bookmark page's community ever again - Hopefully you can see why you have been having trouble driving traffic from them to your site. I promise they are not a waste of time.

Wow thank you.... I have been looking for some information about this for so long. I was wondering why my social bookmarks were not giving me the traffic I was told it would. Nothing has ever been explained in such detail like this about social bookmarking like this before to me. Thanks again.

        Hey Jeffrey,

Great post to follow your article writing/submission post!

I wanted to know your thoughts on multiple social directory submission via the likes of SocialBot or any other of those submission softwares. Are you guaranteed your backlinks by using these? I ask this because obviously they don't go into the same detail you do on your OP with manual submission?

        Thanks,

        Michael

PS I subscribed to this one as i did your last one on articles...great work and thanks for sharing!

          Michael,

What I have found to work for me... is that I will find 4 or 5 social bookmarking sites which I think will work for my niche... depends on the niche.

Then I will put my efforts to those. Doing this many can be sometimes overwhelming I would not want to do more. Of course if you can outsource that work that could work too... Never done that with Social Bookmarking though.

So to answer your question I do not use bots, I just do it manually. Just submitting your site to a social bookmarking site is not efficient and that is what the bots do. Sure you may (may not) get backlinks), if you do then why not... however you won't get traffic from those sites, just backlinks to pump up your main site.

So do it manually. I hope that makes a little sense I know I was kind of rambling.

Good post with some very helpful info. I would say that people should also be sure that their site is the type of site that will gain a benefit from social bookmarking traffic.

Although I haven't tested it for a lot of niches...what have you found? Do social networks incorporate all types of buyers?

Thanks for the info Jeffrey, I've used stumble upon to drive up to 5,000 uniques per day to one of my blogs, it's a great way to drive traffic.

All you have to do is post those "7 best things" or "10 steps to" type of posts and they'll flood your site with traffic.

Great article. The only thing I would add is that you can use socialmarker to help speed up the process of social bookmarking. You still have to sign up with each site (and create the profile you want), but for bookmarking individual posts I find socialmarker to be a real benefit. And remember, don't just bookmark your own site, but also bookmark other sites you find useful and bump/vote/digg other people's submissions when you agree with them. It is "social" bookmarking after all.

      Hey guys,

Quick question. A lot of the social bookmarking sites are no follow. Do you guys still use them and if so, do you see any significant traffic that actually converts?

    Hi Jeffrey

    Nice post!

How many sites to you leave a comment or link on a day/week?

I've read that some people aim for 30 a week and I'm not sure how many I should be aiming for. Obviously the more the better but what do you or other folks do?

      Mary,

It depends... pretty much whenever I get a chance. I make sure whenever anyone shouts me on digg I rate their sites. And I try to comment on peoples blogs often when I receive twitter requests.

The goal for social bookmarking is to make good online relationships with people... Thus converting into sales .

See bookmarking was hard for me to understand also at first... that's why I wrote this thread.

Great post, but I wouldn't bookmark my own site first thing. In fact, you shouldn't submit any of your own material for at least the first 30 days. Otherwise, you'll just be spotted as a self-promoter, which is looked down upon at most of these sites. Get to know the site and vote up the submissions of the top people on the site and try to build up a set of relationships. You've got to give love to get love.

Using a tool like Socialbookmarker to spew out 100s of links is a very bad idea. It was a good strategy about a year ago when most of these tools first came out, but Google has since gotten wise. In the last few months we've seen a Google Slap for sites that do this type of activity. A bookmark without many supporting internal links (votes) is a clear signal of social network spam. Having hundreds of inbound links like that will get your site penalized. You're much better off concentrating on a few of the major sites and building strong profiles with lots of social validation.

Thank you for all of the useful input to the thread! This is great advice. People on social bookmarking sites like for you to be good to them as well. When you add people as friends and receive requests to digg their articles or whatever their articles depending on the site make sure to give them some love. That way when you need some help they will be there for you!
