Why Do So Many Chase the Internet Marketing Dream?

I got to thinking that jobs suck......all of them......maybe for different reasons but they all suck. To me the exchange of money for my time does not seem to be a very good deal.

I love to read and I ran across two very good thought provoking books on the subject recently when testing out my new Kindle (what a great invention!) and this prompted more thought on the subject during the normal boring drive to work and my job.

Anyway one of these books suggested that the time money exchange only works if you work a chunk of time for repeat payments time after time.......now that blew my mind which is what a good book should do. You can read my full rant on the subject at the link in my signature.......but what books really changed your life by changing the way you think?

I thought this was common knowledge. I wouldn't think it's anything new if I were reading that book.

Anyway, to answer your question in relation to the book's point...
You are right. The "time money exchange" doesn't sound like an attractive deal. That is EXACTLY why many people chase the IM dream. In IM, we can set and forget. Meaning, after spending the initial time and efforts to build our sites, lists, SEO etc... it will require little daily efforts from our parts to keep earning from them. In order words, we'll be working less while make more money.

Freedom is what earners are after with any venture. You build and let the website work for you. Most fail, few succeed. But the chase is what is truly rewarding. Money doesn't buy happiness, but it buys freedom which can lead to happiness.

They can always outsource the work. With the likes of Fiverr, odesk and elance, that's not as big a challenge considering the benefits.

OrangeBull....great choice of books there my friend......Outliers is an interesting one, I enjoyed it immensely and it was a best seller for very good reasons. The Rich Dad series is always a popular choice and I think people generally miss the point....the author has frequently been accused of telling a story but I don't think this matters. What really matters is the fundamental principles of the ideas presented, and these were very thought provoking.

Any book that makes you think I should really only have sex with my girlfriend in the spring so that if we have children they are born in January or early February because the kids will have an advantage in school has definitely changed your thinking.

A book that makes you realize there are four ways to make money, i.e. employment income, self-employment income, business income, and investment income, and a book that makes you realize that the easiest way to make money is to create it out of thin air by coming up with an idea that other people might invest in definitely changed my way of thinking.

Then there is "The E-Myth" which teaches the value of creating a system, then of course "Built to Last" and it's "Good to Great" companion that show you some of the different kind of thinking that goes on at companies that become institutions which was impressive for me.

Realizing that I'm a Maven who occassionally becomes a Connector certainly impacted my life back when I was helping with a few Presidential campaigns in the early part of the last decade, and realizing that one guy with a camera and $7 grand made from being a guinea pig for a medical lab could change his stars is always fun.

I guess you could say I like those books for different reasons.

I would have to say that E-Myth really helped me the most. I have owned several businesses in the past. Until I read the E-Myth though I would say that my businesses were just jobs. My current business runs almost on autopilot and pays all my bills. This has allowed me to concentrate my time starting two more businesses. Neither has made a dime yet but I have high expectations. I officially "open the doors" at the end of August.

The Four Hour Work Week is another great choice entrepreneurjay - again the main reason I like it is that it present ideas that make you think....and these are the types of books that I enjoy. Timothy Ferris does a great job in presenting the idea of working from anywhere in the world that you like and I loved the idea of earning money in one country and spending it in another (cheaper cost of living) country.

Hmm not too many books have made my stop and really think about my own points of view or values but 3 stick out clearly in my mind...

      Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
Think and Grown Rich by Napoleon Hill
4 Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferris

By far Ayn Rand's books have had the biggest impact on my way of thinking. Oh sure some of her ideas are kind of nuts but the basic premise of not letting someone else determine how much my mind is worth stands right there at the top of my beliefs. I know this is going to sound silly but The Rum Diary is what did it for me by Hunter S. Thompson. It was the book that made me want to say F it and start traveling and living life on my own terms.

From there, I started looking into how I could apply my use of computers and the net to let me do this. I ended up falling into freelance writing and blogging and so here I am today. I work on my own terms and just recently had the privilege of traveling to Japan and Thailand for 2 months.

4 hour work week was one on this list that didn't work for me. For me, it just had the feel of a guy that realized the success of 'Think and Grow Rich' and decided to put a new marketing spin on it... but it didn't ring nearly so true.

'The Secret' was the same way. It tends to violate a lot of natural laws in suggesting that anything can be accomplished. Had me scratching my head a lot going..... "huh?" Looking in the mirror and repeating "I will grow rich" all day ain't gonna' make you rich.

Think and Grow Rich is still the Best. There's a guy who's life study was what he wrote about it just feels honest and leaves the reader going "Wow".

*Psycho Cybernetics - Maxwell Maltz (I keep this by my bed and have read it 100's of times)
*Triggers - Joseph Sugarman (EXCELLENT Read - Couldn't put it down and HAD to send the author a thank you for that one)
*Unleashing the Idea Virus - Seth Godin

I do have to say that although there was a lot of good information in the '4 Hour Work Week', I didn't like many of the ideas of outsourcing EVERYTHING and depersonalizing yourself. If I am going to communicate with clients via any medium, I want them to know that they are getting a personalized response from me and that YES I care... sending out generic "I only check my email on Tuesday at noon when there is a 20% chance of showers, so I will get back with you someday after I finish my Pina Colada in the Bahamas" is just not my style.

If you are new to any kind of marketing (especially if you are just starting your conversion from J.O.B. to pursue Online Consulting) then I recommend these three books be the FIRST books you read. Mindset is everything!

*Psycho Cybernetics - Maxwell Maltz (from above)
*Think and Grow Rich - Napoleon Hill
*The Obvious Expert - Elsom Eldridge Jr. & Mark Eldridge

    Freedom and Options.

The freedom to choose each and every day what I want to do with it. Not to schedule my life around a J.O.B.!!!!

Having Options. Not having all my choices be restricted by my current financial situation but choosing what I want to do without having to worry about the cost.

Question: Why Do So Many Chase the Internet Marketing Dream?
Answer: To make money from home.
I think that is the reason, in a nutshell.

The reasons why people want to make money from home are many:

*to avoid having an ahole boss
*to not have to drive to and from work
*to be your own boss and take time off when you really want or need to
*to make good $ when no one will hire them due to age or lack of formal education
      *to set one's own schedule
*to not have to get up and shower, shave and put on work clothes (to work in one's pajamas)
*to be able to watch kids while working
*to be more in control of one's own income

to me there stil lseems to be 2 different schools of thought

    1) Build a big business, develope a system, manage employees etc. Make big money managing your business. Takes alot of time and effort to reach the end goal.

    2) Earn decent money but have all the free time in the world to enjoy as you want.

A bit conflicting if you ask me...

Because for peoples working 7+ hours per day for an "average" salary, having the ability to earn income from home is really priceless .. it's not necessary that peoples want to get rich or are lazy, i think it's mostly that peoples want more time for them..which is legitimate.

I'll be honest here i think the normal "day jobs" or "offline jobs" or whatever you call it are a scam for the most part, for me it really compare to modern-day slavery(yea you're welcome to debate this with me i got arguments) when i see my parents that are working so hard, and so many hours per day, of course if your revenue is decent it's not that bad, what i mean peoples that are working 40 hours per week for a baddy salary .. that's scam for me because your time is worth way more than that, in other words you waste most of your life doing "work" for other peoples that profits mostly the bosses, investors, and higher-ups(pyramidal) but in the end of the day, whether you work hard or with your heart will not get your salary raised.

In IM you get rewarded for your efforts, that's highly motivating to me .

Hey and by the way this is not about communism or somthing like that ..a fair distribution of the benefits(made by the company you work for) is what it's about.

It was life-changing for me and ultimately led to me reading nearly all of the above named books and many more. There's definitely some very real truths to the Law of Attraction and I firmly believe that the more you help others, the more you prosper.. or "what goes around comes around".
Great listen, Amy. I had never heard it before. Really great stuff! Definitely right along the lines of Think & Grow Rich. Glad you posted the link. Highly recommended!

When I read the title of this post I thought it was a joke.

I don't chase it,, it's a massive obsession! I couldn't stop even if i wanted to. I dream about it at night and I think of how to better it during the day. And I love every minute of it.!!!

It's unfortunate that many do this, but the truth is too many people have been suckeed into get rich quick schemes, by products that are just too good to be true, and people especially newbies tend to believe the hype

I think alot of people dream and then when they see how hard this is they throw it all away.

But if you do take this online thing seriously and work hard anything can be yours. Whatever you dream you can acheive so they say!

What alot of people dont realise and i think this is true, is that starting an online business is harder then a 9 - 5 job. But once its up and running its easier than anything. Most people cant get past the whole start up hump and give up. But the 2% of peopel that I believe do make it, never give up and keep studying and learn how to make their business better.
