Help - Some websites not opening!

Warriors,

I'm currently facing a problem to which I feel some of you more
experienced pros might have a solution.

You see, for the last 3 or 4 days, I am not able to access specific
websites.

For instance, I haven't been able to access my yahoo mail for the last 3 days.
Surely, yahoo couldn't have been down for 3 days straight.

And it's not like the problem is only with the Yahoo site.

A couple of other sites also - including those which I've never visited before - some
of them open normally and the others don't.

These sites seem to be loading for ever but never do.

I've tried a couple of fixes given on various websites, but none of them
has worked.

Hopefully, one of you will have a solution to this problem.

    1. Optimize your browser
    2. perform ipconfig/flushdns
    3. perform disk clean-up
    4. run cc cleaner

    You're using Firefox right?

    That happens to me sometimes but I just refresh it and it shows the website.

    Dean,

    About a year ago I was suffering exactly what you've described here, and I might have a solution for you.

    I run a tight machine, and I mean TIGHT.

    So after enjoying this problem for over a week, I called my ISP and asked if anything was wrong on their end.

    The guy on the other end of the phone told me I had a virus, and to clean my machine. I called 4 times hoping to get someone to offer something different.

    I tried to tell them I've been online since 1994, and how I keep my machine. But all I got was yeah right, virus, virus, etc. (tons of annoyance here)

    After another four frustrating days, and some research, I found a forum discussing my specific ISP, and this problem.

    Hell, some days I couldn’t even get Google to load.

    'the' problem, and perhaps yours, was with my ISP’s DNS.

    The following steps did the trick. And if it doesn’t work for you, it's easy to change back these settings.

    I’m assuming you’re using Windows. If so...
    1. Go to your control panel and then select “network connections”.
    2. Right-click on your local area connection.
    3. Select Properties.
    4. Click on the Internet protocol (TCP/IP) so it’s highlighted.
    5. Click on the properties tab.
    6. At the bottom, you’ll see your current settings set to “obtain DNS server address automatically”.
    7. Instead, put a ‘tic’ in the form field “use the following DNS server addresses.
    8. For preferred DNS server enter: 208.67.222.222
    9. For alternate DNS server enter: 208.67.220.220
    These IP's come from openDNS.com and they're free. You can go to their site and read more about who they are.

    Now just click OK, and OK again, to close the open windows.

    That’s it. Do that, and see if it doesn’t solve your problem (and most likely, speed up your connection too).

    NOTE:
    Every few months I format my main drive just to ‘clean house’.

    And every time, I forget to change the IPs to openDNS's. You know what? The same trouble returns, which of course reminds me to make the change.

      I have had that issue with some versions of FireFox. Clear your private data, close the browser, open a new one, and that might do the trick!

        Hey guys, it's working!

        I implemented all the suggested changes at one go, so I can't say
        for sure which one worked. The important thing is that all the sites
        seem to be opening normally now.

          What? Aren't you dying to know?

          If you're ever in the mood to find out... just for fun... change your DNS settings back to automatic for a few hours to see if you're problem returns. I bet it will.

          Then when you make the changes again, things will be perfect.

          I sure would love to know if that was it.

            Boy, was I glad to run across this thread!! I have been having the same problem for the past few days; unable to access several websites that I have always frequented. I couldn't even access the mail accounts from my own website!

            John, I wanted you to know that I followed your instructions and the problem cleared up immediately. I can't thank you enough. You have saved me many agonizing days!!

            Do you have any idea why an isp may get blocked in the first place?

                I had the same problem as well. However with websites that wouldn't load, I would hit refresh and sometimes they would load fine after that.

                I am connected via a wireless network we have in our house. I went into the WAN settings, and clicked the DHCP release button, and then the DHCP renew button. The connection was faster, and the problem was gone after that.
