Hey everyone

So here's the story.
I want to set up a website, get it ranked in the number one position on google for my carefully choosen keywords and eventually earn some of the green off it!!

I know it won't be as easy as that or, as another warrior said before, we would all be millionaires already...

I am right now in the absolute first step of the process - the picking of a profitable niche.

So what I am wondering is, does anybody know if the sports market is a profitable one?

Maybe from past experiences or even present experiences?

Not sure on the exact niche I will get into yet but i have narrowed it down to a handful in the sports market

So any advice anyone can give will be really appreciated

All the best to everyone trying to make an extra buck in this game,
Sean

To be honest I havn't even thought of products to promote yet. The way I saw it I would find a profitable market -> choose a popular niche -> set up my website full of useful content -> get it ranked and THEN worry about promoting products

      Would anyone agree with this?

That seems fine for a hobby; or if it's a topic you're so passionate about that you'd do it anyway.

But, IMO, it's best to have a clear idea of how you're going to monetize your venture before starting out. If you have a target reader/customer in mind from the outset, it will help you in deciding on the right content, style and tone for your site.

          Sweet

          Thanks for the advice Frank.

It is most definetly in it for money I am rather than a pastime. I can't wait to actually see some

So what you say is before I even do anything:
          • I should know the niche I will be in (obviously)!!!
          • I should know my targeted audience
          • I should have a good list of keyword that are highly searched with low competition and are buying keywords
          • I should know the products I am going to be promoting ( have a list of the products I have choosen even )
          Is that about correct?

    You've just missed Copa America

Some niches in the market are profitable, some not. It depends on many factors. You can get a few ideas checking out magazines.com. If there are many publications around a niche, then you may want to go for it. Plus, check out retailers, big dogs like Amazon and Ebay etc. to see what is selling.

depends on how competitive of keywords you want to go after

I know sports jerseys are extremely profitable but also very competitive.

Sports collectibles like cups, beer coasters and etc can make some good profits

Im not sure of there are any affiliate products specifically in this niche, but if you can find a good supplier in the industry, I am sure the ecommerce side of it would pay off pretty well in time.

Not sure if this will help you, but here goes...

1.) Use Google Keyword tool, search for [exact] match domain names, preferrably (.com, .net, .org, or. Info) - you can also use free version of TrafficTravis or Market Samurai
2.)SEO practices...always use keywords in the following manner:
-Meta Title, meta-description, and meta keywords
-Use tags (<h1>|<h2>|<h3>) in your posts, pages, or articles...containing the 'targeted keywords"
-Spinkle your keywords throughout your posts on ave of 3-4%. Another words, for every 100 words your keywords should appear 3-4 times for optimal rankings in serps.
-Build relevant backlinks (post comments on pr1 sites with relevant content.
    - Submit to all major search engines you can
    - Create a sitemap (detailed map of your site)
    - Optional, but recommended...install Google Analytic in footer php
-Again, optional...but Google loves Wordpress...so build sites with WP

Then add content, rinse and repeat. I created a simple review WP site in 4 hours, and caught some sales. The reality is; you will have to market the site afterward. Sig links, free classifieds, paid FB ads...etc..

Doesn't really matter what niche...this pretty much is thebasics to get you ranking high.

    All the Best,

    Hey there,

good choice is all I say. People are always looking for sports related products online. Do the first (crucial) step and find good buyer keywords for your target niche. What follows after is relatively the same stuff - create a site around your product and promote it at will.

    1. pick a niche.. football, baseball, etc.. or product niche... shirts, collectables, cups, etc
    2. target audience is likely anyone who likes sports, or the specific sport your targeting
    3. keyword research is probably crucial at this point. You want to target keywords that get traffic and are at the end of the sales funnel. They dont necessarily need to be low competition, but I would pick a mixture of both low and high. High competition keywords are competitive for a reason... because they pay off
    4. I always say... the best niche is one that you are familiar with... if your a sports fan, then its probably a good niche to be in.

I agree with frank you must know how your going to monetize your project 1st, then you know how in what perspective to write your content.
Sports is a lucrative niche especially instructional videos as I once sold some boxing instructional videos on ebay & did quite well from it. So once again you need to know what your strategy for monetizing your project is.
          Cheers,

            Thanks Rob

When you say instructional videos do you mean something like 'p90x' or 'insanity'?

Both are workouts that you follow along on dvd

Lead generation sites make a fair amount of money, and they can be done for many niches, from building to sales. all you have to do for these types of sites is keep them high up and make your site an affiliate site to a huge company in that niche, then once you have the leads rolling in, you start making major money
