I Hope You FAIL...Seriously I do.

In the 2 years I've been involved in IM education,
I've heard more cliches than I care to remember...

...but one cliche that I think has recently struck
me the hardest and I believe will have the greatest
impact on ALL of us is this:

"Failure is a crucial part of success."

I know, it's been said a million times before, often
by some very well respected people in our little
community.

But I want to push this onto some who are probably
like I was only 12 months or less ago...

You need to learn how to accept failure and assess
it logically.

- Because failure IS the stumbling block, not the technique
itself.

- Failure is the reason why you've got a dozen domain
names on your hosting account that never got used.

- Failure is the reason you've started more projects in
2008 than you've spent hours working.

- Failure is the reason why you find every reason NOT to
do something because you know it will probably fail...
...(oh the bitter irony)

But here's my message to you and I cannot emphasize
how important this really is (despite the cliche overload):

If you're not spending each day encountering small/medium/
large failures, then you're not doing enough to succeed for
yourself.

I don't know what you define success as, and I am not
here to tell you what is right or wrong in your business...

...but I can say with 100% confidence that if you are
not experiencing failures on varying levels on a regular
basis, then you're either on a plateau of "safety" in your
business where you are making a comfortable living (which
is cool by the way)...

...OR you're stalling yourself because of the fear of failure.

Let me tell you, it's easier said than done to accept failure
on a regular basis.

It's like a huge ego knock, a complete deflation of your
senses and all that happens is that the little red devil on
your shoulder tells you:

"Haha, I told you not to bother".

However, I truly believe that accepting failure is simply
an ability that can only be achieved by creating a solid
positive mindset.

Again, I'm treading carefully to avoid cliche but...

If you see failure as a negative (because you're in a
negative mindset), then you'll never see the positive
repercussion or other potential from your failure.

In other words, you need to start stomaching failure
and USING it to become successful.

As the cliche goes, you cannot succeed unless you
know how to fail. Boy is that true.

However, not so long ago if a project failed on me
(even the smallest aspect like if my emails were not
being opened or my sales were low) then I would
just quit.

This may have happened to you in the past and
may still be happening to you right now.

Allow me to suggest a couple of things to
help you fail like a successful person would:

Step 1. Next time you fail, smile then take a break.

Spend the evening AWAY from your computer, heck,
even go outside and get some fresh air (I dare you!).

Step 2 The next day, you'll sit down away from your
computer and imagine what small difference that project
would have made to your life had you surpassed that failure
and moved on with the project to the next step...

Step 3 Write down 2 or 3 benefits that you'd be on
your way to experiencing.

Step 4 Next, you'll think logically and calmly about
the project and why that particular aspect failed.

Ask yourself:

- What aspects do I think made it fail?
- What would I do differently if I could go back and make
changes?
- Are there other people that have done what I tried to do
and succeeded?
If so, WHO are they and HOW did they
do it?

The answers to these questions will provide you with the
motivation and logical basis as to whether you'll decide to
continue with your project before you mentally trash it and
start looking for another path to travel down.

Failure can be avoided much more easily when you simply
laugh in its' face and treat it like a golden piece of education
that no eBook could teach you more prominently.

It's all very well reading guides and thinking "yeah, I can see
how that would work"...

...but nothing, and I mean nothing, will push you more than
a costly mistake...

...a mistake that you now know how to avoid next time.

I hope that in 2009 you fail more.

  • I couldn't help myself but tell you this -- the post was timely.

I think I just learnt to behave in the forum.

Like they say, " there is no such thing as failure; there is only learning"

Nick, great post. I've been failing my way to success for 6 years now. I
fly by the seat of my pants, take chances, do stupid things sometimes, take
more chances, and as a result, keep making more money every year.

The day I stop making mistakes and the day I stop "failing" is the day they
pack me up in the box for good.

Thanks for a very inspiring thread.

This is such a key concept to grasp for people. The failures teach you so much. They teach you how to test, what doesn't work, your strenghts, your weaknesses, what to outsource, and so many other things. It would be nice to get it right the first time everytime, but that just is not how it is.

One thing people have to realize. This business is filled with more failure
      than success.

      Think I'm kidding?

We get all excited about a 5% conversion rate.

Guess what gang? That means 95% of the people who came to your site
didn't want nuthin to do with your product.

Imagine batting .050 in the Major Leagues.

You wouldn't last more than a month.

      Think about it.

And THAT is the real, hidden buzz to entrepreneurship...living on the edge and staying alive. Every day you live and breathe as a business should feel like you're Ray Mears...surviving in the wild with what you've learned in the past.

So true. Even closer to home, take a look into conversion rates of traditional direct response/offline media (ads etc).

Furthermore, as a business owner, the REAL failure comes from not capitalizing on the original failure...

This was actually the hardest thing for me to realize. When I was younger and I "failed" I gave up. It took me years to learn the valuable lesson you've given to us all here.

      Nice, I like it!

Do you know what mine is?

"Failure is not an option...it is a necessity"

One of my own personal quotes to myself (although I'm sure others have said that before).

I've been failing for the past 5 years now with no luck of finding something that works for the long run. I wonder when will I start succeeding instead of failing all of the time, because this IM stuff is not working for me.

This tip alone has saved my life on 10-100 occasions. Sitting there and sweating the small stuff only leads to seeing the problem 1,000x larger than it really is. Just go away, go do something else.

      Great post Nick!

I truly believe that failure is never permanent unless one gives up.

If you're not failing, you're not stepping out of your comfort zone. If you're not stepping out of your comfort zone, you're not succeeding.

      Thanks for the post.
