In my opinion branding yourself is the starting position for marketing on the internet, it does not matter if you use facebook, a blog or a website. I recommend buying a domain yourownname.com then provide as much details about yourself and what you do. the more information you provide the more people will trust you.

Before buying anything or doing anything on line the first thing I do is to search for then on Google, if they are not on the first page of Google results I do not even bother to do business with them. It is interesting to do a search on so called internet gurus and SEO specialists, many will not pass this test.

If you go to my personal website you will find a recording of a webinar on personal branding which I did some time ago, perhaps that will help you.

Great information on branding a person, I would say that branding is about being oneself in a sophisticated manner and taking details on every strength you have to accomplish your set goal is very important.

I would agree to do whatt David said in the above post:

    1) get a domain in your name

    2) create accounts with facebook, Twitter,Linkedin, etc with a professionally designed page (by you or get someone in Fiverr (dot) com to do it for you.

    3) Build a list through the above and give VALUE to your suscribers

    - Hope that helps!

btw, I did not quite get what "rj" is...??)

Social networks are a great way to build a person's brand.

Get a twitter, facebook, linkedin, google+ etc, build it that person and then add other people within your industry.

Continue to share great information and over time you can easily establish yourself as an expert in your field.

Before you start branding yourself or anyone else, you need to make sure that you've already set up your website, etc. where you give something of value to your visitors. Before you start, you need to ask yourself this question: When someone gets to your website, fanpage, twitter page, etc., what are they going to find that helps build a relationship with that person?

I assume you're eventually going to sell something using your name and reputation to back the product, so you're going to need to make sure that when people see your name next to whatever product you're pushing your name actually has some value.

If you're not offering something of value to your visitors, you're just spinning your wheels & won't get anywhere.

The first thing to do when branding yourself is by owning your name in the internet. To do this, you need to create profiles like on LinkedIn, names.com, etc. so that once you search for your name, there is only one person that these websites refer to. "rj" is a very common name, maybe you need to try a different name specific to yours. Why not use your whole name?

      Hey guys,

Thanks for the response..Let me clarify something , by rj i meant radio jockey... I understand that creating an individual microsite might not be feasible at the moment, so i am left with just social media options..

    First...
Create your own website first and define who you are...Define it as narrowly as you possibly can and distinguish yourself as much as you can from everyone else.

Then blog, upload content to your website, tweet, make videos on YouTube… no matter what you choose, just make sure you name it and tag your name on everything.

Then own your name everywhere you can, Facebook, Flicker, Digg, etc..

    One tip:

When getting domain and registering social media profiles, try ot make the all consistent e.g. I have www.tomhunt. io, twitter.com/tomhuntio, facebook.com/tomhuntio as this gives a consistent image to you brand and makes it easier for people to find you.

Furthermore, it can also be useful to use the same profile and cover images to add to this effect

    Thanks
    Tom

Regardless of the platform, the branding of a person or business is all about...

    1. The niche market they play in - being clear on that
    2. Knowing what value they offer in the marketplace - what expertise/value add do they provide. In the case of rj, what is their value-add in terms of entertainment...what personality trait both suits the rj and is attractive to a segment of the audience (take a stand here - top brands are not attractive to everyone, they are SUPER attractive to a subset of their market by taking a stand and not trying to be vanilla)
    3. Tell their story...create and then consistently share their story in line with the value add - remember that any brand should be multi-dimensional - share stories that cross personal, social and professional bounds. If the rj is a not just a rj, but is also a poor person who struggles with certain challenges that are common - SHARE that and make that part of their brand

lear mission statement. Building a successful brand begins with uncovering who you are and what your purpose is. Your mission statement is the core of your brand.

Unique value. It is important to know your competition so you know how to position yourself amongst them.

Quality logo. If there is any step of your branding you don't want to skimp on, it's your logo.

Professional website. In this age of technology, the importance of having a website is obvious. It doesn't have to be fancy, but you need at least a basic one with all relevant information and, ideally, one that translates to mobile platforms.

Personal style and voice. Branding isn't just about what you look like, but also how you sound, how you communicate.

Social media presence. Social media is one of the most effective marketing tools out there today, and the least expensive.

Strong content strategy. It is hard to stay relevant in conversations online today if you are not participating in them. While you could hire a copywriter or blogger to help produce content on a regular basis, if you are on a budget all you need is some time, patience and creativity.
