According to Matt Cutts, Google will now tell you if you've been infected by a specific piece of malware.

Using Data to Protect People

If you have been infected - you'll know it, assuming you've done a search on Google lately.

  • This is not new, its been in google webmaster tools for several months,,,, maybe even close to a year.

In other words - old news.

    • I'm sure it's old news for people using Google webmaster tools - but Matt Cutts shared the article yesterday on his Google+ account.

Not everyone uses Google Webmaster tools - in fact, some are dead set against using it. Or so I've heard on this forum.

In other words - for those who didn't already know - this post is for you.
    • No, this is new and has nothing to do with webmaster tools. (It always helps to actually read the article).

With webmaster tools Google will tell you about a problem on your website when it is spidered.

Now, based on information from your web browser, Google will tell you if your personal computer is infected.

No webmaster tools required. You don't even need a website.

Essentially, a type of malware causes your web browser to use certain proxies. If you are accessing Google and those proxies are detected, Google will display a warning that you may have a malware problem.

  • Another thing Google will do is if you use Gmail, it will tell you if your account was attempted to be accessed by unauthorized persons. I know, because my account was almost hacked.
