First, I want to say that Iceland is awesome.

Second, I'm assuming the actual spelling of your name is Þórður and not Thordur. I think just using the English alphabet to spell it is enough, but you could shorten it further to "Thor" or something like that.

I wouldn't be that concerned about it.

Anglicize it if you want when targeting the US market - Thor Hermann would work. Think of it as a "nickname".

I like the idea of making your name more English looking like Kay said. I had a pseudonym for a while but found that I gained more reputation when I used my real name.

My first thought on this is to promote your real self...we are in a global society and the world is going to have to get used to that.

In fact, you could actually use it to your advantage. Have a Bio page on your main site www.thordurhermannsson.com. Put up a short video introduction and include the correct pronunciation of your name...perhaps some background on meaning/history etc. This site could be the central hub for your other sites or perhaps your primary blog/forum site. Of course, it all depends on your strategy and needs...but certainly an option.

I can't speak for everyone, but if I came to your site and you had good content and support...your name would not be a deciding factor in the purchase.

I've seen several marketers who have shown a very up-close and personal side....family photos, vacations, etc...and shared it all through social media and their own website. And it seemed like a very good strategy.

So, if you build up your Facebook and link to it from your Bio page....with a little imagination you could develop quite a following by giving the rest of the world a taste of Iceland, your home town there, and yourself.

I guess if you had hard data showing that this one factor was hurting your sales or image....maybe using a nickname would be an option. But, I wouldn't start with that assumption.

I would agree. Except...people will never get that domain name spelled right. It's unbelievable how people can massacre even basic names. LOL

I know it sounds silly, but it IS something to consider if you're making your living online. Of course, you could choose a totally different domain name too. But if it's important for you to be found by name via URL or even Google, I would bet it's going to be a whole lot easier if you use the shorter version.

Great advise I always tell people to brand themselves first with information about you. then build some business sites with links back to your personal site,

As some people tend to jump from one opportunity to another it good to keep the business side separate until such time you are focused on what you are doing. Use your real name everywhere even as a user name although you might want to shorten it to Thor Hermannsson as a username.

Your name is an advantage or disadvantage, it's all in how YOU look at it and how YOU treat it. There are very great people who have very odd names.

With that said, many celebrities change their names because they are not so sexy sounding, there is nothing wrong with using a "pen name" look at what eben pagen did with double your dating, on that site, his name is david deangelo...

OK, I realize how important it is to state your real name and what you do and how you got involved with the product your selling etc.

Depends on what you are selling and who you are selling it to.

For the vast majority of ways to make money online your name is irrelevant.

That's actually a really cool name!

As was mentioned before, Thor Herman was my first reaction. I also like the sound of Thor Hermanson.

You could have a lot of fun with it too! Like buy a hammer and do videos about whatever your niche is. Come up with fun ways to incorporate the hammer in your videos. (I am obviously referencing Norse mythology).

I'd go with it, man! There are so many opportunities for you with such an awesome name.

As many are pointing out, what you perceive as a weakness might actually be a strength...

Many struggle to create an identity, but with a strong and striking name, you're not likely to be forgotten. Now, just make sure that they remember you for the RIGHT reasons... :-)

I say keep your name... ultimately you'll be judged not by your name but by the quality of the advice, products and/or services you provide.

For the most part, I think people that speak English are quite familiar with names ending in -son, or its variations. Now, if you were female and had a name like Katrin Hermannsdottir, then some people may look twice.

However, if they knew you were from Iceland, then they may think it sounds exotic...and THAT could actually add perceived credibility to what you're saying.

I guess all of that is just a really long way of saying Thordur Hermannsson sounds good!

Yeah I'm pretty sure you can just go with the nickname Thor or Thordur.

And if you hate that then make a pen name. Pen names aren't a scam unless you are scamming people.

You're getting worked up over nothing. I used to think Henderson was an English name until I met a Swede.

The U.S was settled by people from all over Europe so at times it hard to tell if you're not american or exactly where you're from.

doddolfur, good move firstly on getting into online marketing.

On the topic of names to use while in marketing, it is quite common (including in some big names that we are on the lists of) to use pen names. People with very common names (ie: John Smith) would maybe do it so as not to blend in and not get attention...

I actually thought about using a different name than my own for the same reason as you are, but it just so happens that I really like my name, and I don't think it is that hard for people, who don't speak danish to get the idea of how my name is spelled. I did however choose to exclude my middle name, because no one gets it even close to right when trying to pronounce it.

I think the suggestions of shortening your name are good, but to tell you truth, I don't see a problem with just sticking with your real name. Because of the emigration from many nordic countries to America, there are lots of people with names ending with "son" and "sen" just like ours so it's my impression that names like that aren't uncommon at all in the english language.

Oh, and if I got anyone curious about that middle name of mine, it is "Skovgaard" (and it is most likely NOT pronounced the way you think )

I see no problem with your name, but I would agree with what Tracy have stated, some people will ( I would say ) unintentionally massacre your name since they might find it hard to spell your name. Using our real would be much better and will present to the IM world that (my name) is working and earning in the IM world. Although, there are probably some problem with that since there are those who might want to use our name for the purpose of trying to create other accounts for their own personal use. I was a victim of that when I tried to register my name to this one social networking site, then the site states that username was already used. Probably there are other people, who have the same name as mine, but Thor Herman is unique and I would say that you will not have this problem of having a similar name like yours.

for years I hid behind other names and I do still have a pen name I use for one of my blogs, but truthfully, I've had far more success using my real name than any other.

I think your name Thordur is awesome. Be real because that is how you build trust on the internet.

Nothing wrong with your name at all. It may not make the best domain name because of the spelling, but you didn't say if you wanted to use it as a domain. You could always go with thordur.com, or something along those lines if that's taken. I'd check now and buy it if it isn't taken.

Like Kay suggested, Thor Herman is a nice, anglicized version. You could also turn it around, Herman Thor or Herman Thordur.
