How To Make Money PodCasting

My younger brother who is a DJ/Producer just shared with me some of his podcasts and it got me thinking..

Is anyone monetizing podcasts?

How is it different to Internet radio?

Would you need your own website or just jump off somone elses platform like the many large podcasting sites?

  • I do it using BlogTalkRadio.com which is also syndicated to iTunes.

    I have a show about internet marketing, where I actually teach,
    but also do product reviews, etc. That makes direct affiliates sales
    for me any my guests... and generates tons of referrals.

  • One of the bigger success stories for monetization of podcasts is via a method many of us are familiar with: Amazon's associates program.

    The Adam Carolla Show is the #1 most downloaded podcast in the world(it hold the Guiness Record) and while it has more than 10k/month in expenditures, it's a profitable podcast and it's main current source of income is the Amazon affiliates program.

    Basically, the host just says during the show "Hey, instead of bombarding you with commercials like radio shows do, how about you just click through our link on our website if you are going to buy something on Amazon? We'll make a few sheckles and keep the lights on around here and you'll buy what you were going to buy already and you'll also know that you're supporting our show."

    Its sort of brilliant really, and they seem to be doing well with this strategy. Obviously you would need a MASSIVE audience for this to be very profitable, but still, it's a cool idea.

  • I just mentioned elsewhere the Internet Mastery Podcast guys, keeping at it for a few years and being top ranked in iTunes lead them into running a training and mentoring program that makes them a nice living.
