Pay No Attention To That Man In Front Of The Curtain

Let me present a hypothetical situation to you.

Let's suppose for a minute....

Let's suppose I created the next website phenomena...

Let's imagine that this website is such a huge hit that 10,000 people per day are signing up to participate in the website...

Give me another year or two, and I will be pushing into the Internet's top-10 to compete on the same playing field as Google, YouTube and FaceBook!!

Non-IMer's love my website, because we give them awesome value and a credible source of information.

Because I am not a dumb marketer, I set up paid advertising on the site to allow real marketers to communicate their marketing messages to my audience.

I do need to pay the bills, and I did start the website to make money after all.

So, my advertisers get to offer their stuff to my users, for an amount of money that most of my advertisers consider fair.

A few IMers play in my sandbox looking to grab some free advertising, but that is fine, because those guys are such a small segment of the overall user base of the website. Like I can measure them in the point 0000 % range... So no big deal. I can just ignore them and it will all work out fine.

Then some jackwad puts out a product called, "The Next Website Phenomena Cash Goldmine" product.

It sells 2,000 copies as a Special Offer, and IMers start crawling out from under rocks to make "their big score" taking advantage of the resource I had created.

These are not people who want to buy advertising from me. They are people who want to "manipulate my website to grab some free advertising"...

Now I don't want to knock people who are struggling to get ahead, and I don't really care with a CAVEAT...

My CAVEAT is that so long as people are not impacting the quality of my website in a negative way, I don't care... In fact, I'd like to think that one day you might make enough money to buy real advertising from me...

But see, I have a problem now...

The 2,000 folks who just purchased "The Next Website Phenomena Cash Goldmine" were told that they did not need to focus on quality. They needed to focus on "easy", because the most profit is in the "easy money potential".

Before the release of that product, I had about 100 users of 2 million users junking up my website. That amounted to 0.00005% of my user base.

But in less than a few hours, the gold rush is on to my website, and now 2,100 people are trashing the quality that my regular users have come to expect on my website. Now, the damage is coming from 0.00105% of my user base.

In the next three months, the maker of "The Next Website Phenomena Cash Goldmine" has sold 20,000 copies of his product, telling people how to get free advertising on my website!!

Within 90 days, that product has convinced 20,000 more people to come trash up my site. Now, the IMers looking to steal free advertising from my site account for 0.01005% of my user base!!

See how fast the junk element is increasing within my website!!

If I allow "The Next Website Phenomena Cash Goldmine" to continue to work unchallenged for another year, then I could conceivably be seeing one-hundred thousand junk peddlers polluting the experience on my website...

Since IMers create more content than regular folks do, my junk-to-quality ratio is growing at a staggering rate!! And more time will only make the problem worse...

To combat this ever increasing influx of " 'Do you mean I am supposed to spend money to advertise?' type marketers" I must take action!!

I send my wife's friend to buy a copy of the report for me, so that the owner of that product does not see ME on his buyer's list.

Then I figure out how he is manipulating my system.

Now I have to reverse-engineer how they are manipulating the system for profit, so that I can make it less profitable for them to do so.

I have to take this step, because I am losing money as a result of this product.

I am "losing money" because:
  • Some of my current advertisers stop paying me so they can use the free system.
  • The users who are finding the junk peddlers too often are quitting me, making the advertising value that I offer my advertisers less valuable.
  • Potential users are seeing too much junk and deciding they don't want to participate, so my growth rate is now slowing.
  • My cost of operation is increasing, because IMers are loading junk on my servers that I have to pay to distribute to my users.
  • My cost of operation is increasing, because I now have to hire a spam team.

I actually only have three types of recourse I can take to combat the negatives of "The Next Website Phenomena Cash Goldmine":
  1. I can cripple the effectiveness of what was taught in the course.
  2. I can delete the accounts of spammers.
  3. I can put someone in front of the camera to tell IMers how to get the most benefit out of my system. If my guy in front of the curtain can build trust with the audience, we can share with people what we want them to know, to get them to voluntarily do those things we need them to do to be able to identify many of the spammers.

Haha!!!

I would not think this dishonest, because by convincing the spammers to "identify" themselves to us, my spam team will not have to work as hard, thus improving the experience of 99.0085% of my users!!!

For example, there is this guy who works at Google. His name is Matt Cutts, and his job title is "head of the spam team".

LOL

I need a guy like that on my team!!!

When Matt Cutts tells someone that they should link any article they distribute to the web page where the article was "originally produced", how should that be interpreted by an article marketer?

Well, if you believe Matt Cutts, it says they want to know who you are and they want to give YOU credit for the work you produced.

But if you can read between the lines, he told you exactly why... Google wants to know who you are and they want to give YOU credit for the work produced. And when I say "they want to know who you are", I am saying that they want you to tell them WHY you do article marketing. They want to know if you do article marketing to INFLUENCE GOOGLE!!

And when I say that "they want to give you CREDIT as the source of that content", that means they want to know who to blame for the junk and who to penalize.

At least that is what I would direct the head of my spam team to do.

LOL

When Matt Cutts says that "he", a.k.a. Google's Wizard of Oz (the man behind the curtain), does not like using "article marketing for SEO", everything he says after that means they hate anyone who does article marketing to influence their Google rankings.

That does not mean that "article marketing" does not work, nor does it mean that Google will not link to articles!!

After all, the truth of the matter is that Google only indexes certain kinds of content: articles, conversations, images and videos. What else is there?

Yes, I am simplifying the discussion to the most basic elements of content on the Internet. I am doing that for a reason...

Because what is the difference between the content on your site and my site. I call mine "articles" and you call yours what, "blog posts", "information pages" and "sales pages"? LOL

All content on the web is in the form of what could be called: articles, conversations (forum threads), images and videos.

All other dissections of the classifications of content are just cutting hairs...

If Google really hates articles, how do they distinguish between articles and non-articles? LOL

MISDIRECTION RULE #1: Confuse people by making people think there is something different with what they do, in comparison to those people who do the things we favor.

So, I hire my own version of Matt Cutts to convince IMers that:
  • What they are trying to do does not work anymore;
  • Convince people that we can see a difference between what they do and what other people do (convince people that they cannot beat us, because we are "all-knowing" and "all-powerful");
  • Blur the lines between what works and what we want them to do;
  • Lead more people to believe that "giving up" or "never starting" is the best option they can take.

Like it or not, this is the most important battle I will ever have to wage...

This is a battle for the very foundation of my business...

Those manipulative, freebie-seeking IMers will destroy my business for their profit, IF I ALLOW THEM TO DO SO!!!

They will suck all of the profits and traffic out of my site, and scare away the 99% of users that make my site an attractive destination for real marketers, all so that the little IMers can make a few dollars...

Once in a while, I ask people why they just won't pay for advertising like real business owners do...

Then they tell me that they are not making enough money to justify that... So they chase free advertising, hoping to throw something against the wall that sticks... And we all know what kind of substance STICKS to the wall...

People who are chasing little dollars are happy to trash up my website, so that they can make a few dollars or even to make no dollars at all...

This is a battle I cannot afford not to fight!!!

They will destroy me and my cash-cow, if I don't take action to stop them from doing so!!!

Dammit, I worked hard for all that I have!!!

I have earned the right to build a nice way of life for my family, and these wanna-be IMers are willing to destroy my business so they can make beer money!!!

Not only that... Since I have started hiring people to work for me, I now have hundreds of families that rely on my business so that they can keep a house and food to feed the kids. My success is their job protection. It is my responsibility to make sure these people will always have a job that puts food on their table and a roof over their heads.

Now that I have taken a stand and starting fighting for the +99% of my users who appreciate what I have given them, those wanna-be IMers are complaining in forums all over the Internet about how mean and greedy I am!!!

Me GREEDY?!?

Seriously?

If you are willing to destroy the value of what I have created by not taking care to positively contribute to the quality of my website, for the pleasure of making enough money to buy a pizza, then I would argue that it is YOU that is GREEDY!!

It shouldn't matter that I am generating $100k a month, because I have invested a lot to get here and my expenses are pretty large. I should not be faulted for employing hundreds of people and still making a profit!!

I have earned the money I take home each month...

And you are taking value out of my website, without putting more value back into it!!!

If that kind of thinking MAKES ME GREEDY and EVIL, then I am happy to be fitted for my horns and tail.

Screw IMers who want to screw me out of the profits that I can earn on the basis of value I give to my non-IMer user base!!!

Signed,

Mr. Greedy and Evil Entrepreneur

p.s. Some of those schmucks say that I am biting the hand that feeds me...

I respectfully disagree... I believe that I am biting the hand of those who are taking more from me than they are giving back to me.

    Lot's of good stuff here.

    My takeaway:

    1. Don't believe everything Matt Cutts says.

    2. Try to contribute and provide value, not muck things up.

    3. Don't be afraid to, you know, Take Risks. This is business, after all. The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward, usually. (I'm referring to actually paying for advertising) And failure from risks does pay - in the form of experience that is more valuable than any amount of money.

As an owner of a large site like google, facebook, etc. A simple algorithm change will render most of these products useless. You have all the power, not some underground marketer.

People have been trying to "game" Google and "facebook" for years and yet they are doing just fine because every time they do an algorithm change, the old underground systems are much less effective.

Also, as an aside, the underground program could sell 100,000 copies, but maybe only 500 people would actually follow through long term!

The point is this: USER EXPERIENCE is the MAKE IT OR BREAK IT and companies like facebook and google know that if they slip, even a little on this, they are DEAD.

You know why myspace died? Because the popular consensus of the masses using it was, "this is an unusable service" because of spam, so your team would never sleep making sure to change the algorithm religiously to ALWAYS keep the USER EXPERIENCE pleasant and as spam free as humanly possible.

What I love about these sites, even this one is that if you try to spam it, the users will kill you before the service even knows you are doing it. Try to spam this forum tonight and see how far you get before you are crucified!

Google really does have a ridiculous standard of no promotional promoting but you can tell why they have a war (and will win) against most article directories.

The standard is really low to get published. Too low.
