Been wondering about this all day.

Lets say i find a nice search term. High searches with low comp.

But all domains are taken

would adding a letter or word before the exact domain name count massively against your ranking chances ?

sample would be:

Exact match keyword : Cheap DVDs
Available domain name echeapdvds.com or mycheapdvds.com

Thats just a sample not what i was looking at
#domain #names #niche

Many people add a word or even just a letter after the search term phrase it all extensions are taken. Seems to work just as well.

I have a couple sites where the exact domain phrase wasn't available. I added an extra word on the end to both and they are both page 1 number 2 spot and have been for the last year or so.

I've done this to a few of my sites and all of them are still on page one of Google.

As long as you have the keyword in the domain name somewhere it doesn't count too heavily against the seo; At least as long as you have all your on page seo set up correctly.

    Just have to say this.

I did all my research and purchased a domain name yesterday. I setup a site ( quick site not even finished ) and did a few back links.

I'm now on page 1 of google for my keyword !!! after 1 day. Best feeling ever knowing the hard word paid off.. and my site is not finished.. better get a move one lol.

I see lot of people adding e- to the front of their domain names. Sure from an SEO perpective that's fine and even for "e" related products but when I see edoublebeds.com or esoapdishes.com it just looks plain silly.

Make your domain name make sense. SEO is not the end of everything you also have real people visiting your site too!! Getting your site ranked is just stage 1 of the sales process.

You will see lot of "info" about domain density and although it has some validity it will make little difference whether you have echeapdvds.com or mycheapdvds.com or even cheapdvdsonline.com, assuming all your other on-page seo is done and you are backlinking your site.

As finding exact match domains becomes much harder, using near match domains needs to become the "norm" but don't fall into thetrap of just finding near match because you can't find an exact match.

If you accept you are going to find a near match anyway you can then set your sites at much higher search volumes etc.

as far as seo goes - you will do better to have your main keywords show first in your domain.

so if it were me - I would add something after the keyword and not before.

I believe that the longtail keywords are always included in the root domain.

so ex. (genealogy) root (your genealogy) wood work as well as

(genealogy tree yours) etc. SE will pick up either way! so even tho it may not be grammer correct to say genealogytreeyours.com it will be seen & possibly rewarded with traffic for various arrangements of keywords!

Your genealogy tree.... snicky but works!

After the domain is always your best bet. Google will pick it up faster.
