Blog Comments - Are You Inundated with Spam As I Am?

What is the use of comments, to the blog owner? Do they bring in backlinks? The way I understand it is this: you find blogs in your niche and read the contents of these blogs and comment on them. In exchange for that you get to leave a link to your own blog.

I have a few blogs and they are attracting some characters in droves. I can't keep up with the amount of spam. It is quite clear that these people are not buyers, they don't write good English (a few do) and the comments have nothing to do with the subject matter.

Why would anyone leave a comment about "how I met your mother", "Nike shoes", "sleeping bags", "foreign languages", "credit rating", and the one I detest the most "Viagra", on a blog about Web designing software?

I don't mind if my blog helps someone in some way, that's what we all try to do or must do, but why should I waste my time when only about 1% of the people deserve it?

Are you experiencing the same thing? What is the solution?

You could always turn the comments off on your blog to give you some time to recover from the ceaseless spammers.

I received a comment today from a certain "penis enlargement pills" (I suppose it's an alias) stating that my site was a bit too spammy...I almost allow the comment because of the originality.;D

To answer your question they leave comments for backlinking purpose only.

What you could do is activate askimet or simply set you blog to not post comment before moderation and of course never allow spammy commenters.

I do have Akismet activated. I just went to check:

"Used by millions, Akismet is quite possibly the best way in the world to protect your blog from comment and trackback spam. It keeps your site protected from spam even while you sleep. To get started: 1) Click the "Activate" link to the left of this description, 2) Sign up for an Akismet API key, and 3) Go to your Akismet configuration page, and save your API key."

I knew I had it but went to check to make sure it was activated, and it is.
About that "enlargement thing" my email box is full of it The more I block them the more they come and I am a woman.

They're automated comments left by bots. I personally turn comments off on every Wordpress blog if I can. If not, I use Akismet which catches most of it.

  • I get loads of it to all my blogs, but Askimet takes place of the vast majority. The rest I can easily deal with.

Now, if someone could write good spam catching plugins for other web software, I'd be a happy man. The one that really bugs me is Coppermine (an open source image gallery). I get an unreal amount of authomated accounts and attempted spam on thee whenever I leave comments open.

So my question is why do we allow them in the first place if we have nothing to gain and these people don't appreciate it?

Well...one things is that The comments and opinion that readers leave back on the website not only tell the blogger about where he lacks and how he can enhance his readership but also acts like a guiding stone for new readers who visit the blog for the first time.

its just too bad that people use it for the wrong reasons...

Edit the comments, change name, remove email, change link to another page of yours, (on the same site for inter-linking or to another one of your sites or maybe even a friend's site), and finally write your own comment! Remember to ask a question sometimes so you can answer it and give the appearance of a healthy conversation going on. That alone will attract real readers and inter-action.

PS-Add a CAPTCHA. That will reduce spam comments & make the ones that do get by a small enough number to edit.

If you're getting what's called "trackback spam" in your comments section, use
Simple Trackback Validation together with Akismet. No spam for the past three
      years and counting.

Can I get your URL I dont think I have it loaded in my BOT!!!! LOL Just kidding For most of US GRAY HAT SEO's, we try to stay in the pond so to speak . What I'm saying is when I run my bot for backlinks I keyword look for blogs that have what Im selling and then post on it ,ie... lets say acne medicine is my product to sell today I would key word acne and would get somewhere around 20,000 word presses and blog engine sites from around the world that are talking about acne. Then I would set up my captcha bot so it automaticly types those oh so amazing passwords to make sure I'm human LMAO! and boom I just commented on 20,000 sites in the next two hours that all link back to me! Thats good stuff when you keep it in the pond so to speak but general spamming is not the majority when it comes to true seo's... I understand your frustration, I go thru it with my blog sites also.... but you can use it to your advantage! just Like the DogScout said thats what us big boys do!

Thank you "big boy", I will stop deleting those nonsensical messages from now on. Anymore tricks you can pass on would be greatly appreciated if you can PM, please.

Thanks I will look into simple trackback validation because Akismet alone is not enough. On one hand I am glad that my blogs are being seen however not by the right people looking for what I am offering.

What a great idea, thanks. I have noted it down and will do it, especially to some guy who left me four messages on four blogs to buy my blogs for $3000 each. It turned out to be spam and to get me to visit his site. I don't know why he thought this dishonest behavior would get me to buy anything he is selling.

Adding a CAPTCHA does get rid of the majority of spam comments, However I tend to just turn off the comments because its just not worth it for most WP blogs.

I also don't really like ASKIMET so that my be part of why I just turn them off.

The only one I do have comments enabled on is my homepage because that's the blog that I actually care about when it comes to building a community / network

I may be forced to turn them off but at the same time will miss the 1% of useful comments and compliments. We'll see. Thanks

One of my sites received 150,000 comments in just a week while I was on holidays, 95% of them promoting porn or drugs...

I then wrote a huge list of words and added it to the "blacklist". Pretty good results, got me rid of 95% of all the spam comments I used to get.

I watched your video, impressive. Can you reveal the fee structure after the 14-day trial? If not here by PM?
I am in the middle of another program right now but just in case I need another one....

150,000 comments? WHOA, then I have nothing to complain about.

I turn comments off on all of my blogs as I don't want to deal with this. But once or twice a week I get an email that a comment has come in and needs to be moderated. I don't know how they manage to leave them as I said, I turned commenting off.

But that is my answer to that.
