Study Long Study Wrong

you can sit and study for 20 hours a day and not make a dime, The moment you begin to take action you will make money online.

You can know every single thing about internet marketing, but if you dont put what you know to use, it is useless information.

When you learn a new trick or method, the amount of time it takes you to implement that strategy will determine your success with that strategy.

Procrastination is like masturbation, your only screwing yourself.

when you read a book, or learn something new, put it to use that day

do you want to be successful today or never? The choice is yours.

The best system in the world wont work, if you let it collect dust in your mind.

If you want money go get it. stop waiting for a lucky break.

I'm experiencing this short of a lull right now. I'm studying and researching my butt off, but for some reason, day in and day out, time moves by so quickly. Then, I go to bed, wake up, tell myself it's going to be different today. Then, about 20 minutes later, I fall into the same ol' same ol'.

I had a phase where I wasn't doing anything but applying my knowledge, and I made quite a bit of money based on the amount of time I worked. I know that if I repeated what I did then, I would be making good money right now.

I gotta pull my head out!

I was experiencing this a couple weeks ago, that is why I made the post, I stepped out of my comfort zone and began trying new things, so I bought some ebooks, and read them, then when I began to implement the strategies I felt overwhelmed and over my head.

But then I remembered when I began internet marketing. when I look back at some of my first work I laughed, but I was still making money.

So even if you think you are doing things wrong do it anyway, you will then learn from experience, which is the best to me.

You can be told something a million times, but you wont learn until you see for yourself

Remember being a kid, parents never made sense until we moved out on our own, now it's like damn they were right. Should of listened

I completely understand what you are saying. It's hard to get past the "I just need to know more" to the "just do it".

Yes, lots of mistakes will be made, but hey, that's how we learn. I could indeed study 20 hours, but I wouldn't learn as fast as I do just by doing.

Your post is motivating, thanks for the push off the couch!!

      Hi,

If you have a bunch of tasks that need doing (and perhaps the quantity of them are what is overwhelming) choose one that you think you can face.

Get stuck in to that one task, even if you are worried that it might be all that you achieve that day, because you are feeling so unmotivated.

What I find is that by taking action (any action) it flips the brain into a different mode where it is focussed on the good stuff rather than whatever it was before. Often, if I think too long before a task, it seems like it's going to be a drag. But if I force myself to get started, I realise that it's less of a drag than sitting staring at the screen doing nothing.

The mind can play tricks on you. And it has a little lazy part that tells you that everything is going to be a grind whenever you sit and think about it. But the truth is that it's doing nothing (or studying as a way to avoid work) that makes you feel the worst.

The way to silence the lazy part, is to do something, which provides a nice little endorphine hit which overpowers and silences the negative lazy bit.

I'm not a psychologist, but this is my 'street-level' theory which works for me.

Another trick is to find some stats where you have done well, that relate to a long term task where you put the work in at first, but received the pay off later. By reminding yourself of this achievement, it helps the brain to realise that there may not be an instant pay off, but it will arrive if you do the groundwork. Otherwise, without us realising it, the brain can sometimes reject a task and proscrastinate because it can't compute working hard without an instant pay off.

When I have studied how the subconscious mind works and how to program it (for hypnosis for example), often it is said that the subconscious is like a big kid - which is why it prefers visual suggestions and simple, obvious tricks like visualisations.

Therefore, it makes sense that the subconscious will try and trip you up if it doesn't see instant gratification. Again, just my 'street-level' amateur psychology theory. Works for me. Maybe I'm the big kid?

You must've just got lucky then

I have studied this stuff and there are some schools of thought that say "if you want to stop spending time thinking about something unproductive, just start doing something productive".

i.e if you're busy doing something you feel good about, you can't also feel bad at the same time.

If you look into 'cognitive behavioral therapy' CBT - that's basically what's used to help depressed people feel better (keep them busy doing something to occupy their mind)

With that said - I'm not sure I agree with the generalized title of the thread, you CAN take a lot of action and still be unsuccessful in making good money. In fact, I would argue that while taking action (or lack of it) is probably the main problem most people not making money in IM have, the answer is not just to take any action - it's to establish what actions definitely support your business and turn them into habits which you just get on with without the need to constantly have to think about what to do next.

Getting god at something requires - effective practice, not just practice. If you are running around doing 'stuff' without putting it in the context of what you can realistically expect it to do for your business, you can not only be wasting your time but actually sabotaging your future. While you're wasting your time, you're also not doing the things you should've been doing.

They say "failing to prepare is preparing to fail". I think that it's important to give the correct focus to what you should be doing (and constantly revise it), as well as ensuring to actually DO the those things.

          Hi Andy,

You must've just got lucky then
I agree with what you said in your post. Perhaps I should have been a little clearer -

If I had prefaced it with what you added -

If you are running around doing 'stuff' without putting it in the context of what you can realistically expect it to do for your business, you can not only be wasting your time but actually sabotaging your future. While you're wasting your time, you're also not doing the things you should've been doing.
...and tweaked what I said from -

What I find is that by taking action (any action) it flips the brain into a different mode
          to...

What I find is that by taking action (any action that is on your approved list of proven-to-be productive and profitable tasks) it flips the brain into a different mode
I think that might have been clearer.

But still, I'd sooner be doing something that might not be the most productive, than stuck in a horrible procrastination zone - knowing what I need to do, but doing nothing. And as said above, taking a peek at stats and rewards of previous successes often helps me to remember why the PC is turned on in the first place.

As long as my activities fall into one of these two categories below, I know I am moving forwards -

          a) tasks that are part of my proven plan

          b) tasks that are performed in order to road-test new theories

I think you need the learning and the doing. The trick is balancing the two.

I am bad about jumping from idea to idea, so every once in a while I 'punish' myself and quit reading forums, etc. Then I come back after a week or so and I learn something really helpful or find a tool that is helpful to myself or my clients and realize that it's not really smart to get out of the loop completely. Then I just limit myself to a certain amount of time or just use the search to find information directly related to what I'm doing and get back to work.

I study for at least an hour everyday, but when I learn something new I test it right away, forums can be trouble, they get traffic, but can be a devil in disguise if not used properly

I couldn't agree more. I was doing the same thing, reading everything I could get my hands on but not taking action. That has changed and I'm starting to see some results.

My New Year's resolution: DO something that will generate income FIRST THING -- EVERY DAY.

I'm going to think of web pages like fishing lines. Every day I'm going to throw another new line into a pond where the "fish are biting."

    Kia Ora,
I think we can all recall times when we have found ourselves trying to find other things to do, dodge what we know we should be doing, justify our procrastination with excuses.... when the going gets tough it is so much easier to go off and do some other task (like house cleaning) ...
