End of Product Affiliate Sites?

This may already be in discussion, however I couldn't find it.

I sell a gourmet food item and have been working lately on the SEO to get it ranked well. Been considering Amazon as an outlet and looking at the google, yahoo and bing (GYB) stores also. One thing I noticed more often lately is that GYB are showing their store results on the 1st page along with image ads in adwords and branded banners in the organic search results. See below.

Now it doesn't come as a surprise to me because GYB are here to make money and they know that people searching for hard goods are most likely shoppers. So why not grab the commission/sale etc.

What I see happening/trending is the 1st page being covered with GYB shopping and large companies (Overstock, Walmart, Amazon) image ads.

The affiliate with their hammock store on the 1st page will be squeezed out and left to get the crumbs ... if they are out there.

You can quite easily out rank the Google shopping results. I have 3 high traffic Amazon affiliate sites that rank in position #1 for their main keywords with Google shopping results ranked #2. I still make a ton of sales & get lots of traffic with these adds under my sites.

If you do your on & off page SEO right you can out rank all those authority sites & Google shopping results.

It depends on the keywords. If you type in the brand name of a good then it`s almost obvious that a leading merchant leads the first page and runs ad campains contemporarily on the branded keyword. Try analyse targeted keyword phrases related to a good (buy cheap *affiliate product*, or *color*+"model*+*product name*) instead and see what google displays.

I get where you are coming from but don't let this discourage you. It really depends on the keywords you are targeting but you can outrank these stores as Barry mentions above. You should also be analyzing your targeted "buyer keywords" or the phrases someone ready to buy the product would use in their search. These keywords can be much easier to rank for and in my experience "buy product name", "product name review", "product name discount", etc. converts much easier than the "product name" keyword will. People using these keywords are typically much closer to a purchase than those using just the product name.

You're not limited to just targeting one keyword phrase. My sites rank for multiple high search, buyer targeted keyword phrases.

I like to rank the home page of my sites for 4 main target keywords & I use the following structure:

I'll use the keyword "washing machine" for this example to show you how I rank my sites:

    "washing machine"
    "washing machines"
    "best washing machine"
    "washing machine reviews"

I have sites that rank #1 for all 4 keywords structured this way which combine to make alot of quality traffic.

I then rank the internal pages of the site for product or other related search keywords.

Don't let Google adds & other sites stop you from driving traffic to your sites!
