Newb question about HubPages

I've been reading on these forums, and have seen over and over, a preference for building up your own sites rather than putting your content on HubPages or Squidoo because of the risk of getting shut down. Apparently, this happened to a lot of people for supposedly being in violation of their new rules.

That makes me wonder... Does HubPages or Squidoo have the rights to your content?

If someone saved their content on a Word document, couldn't they cut and paste it on to their own blog? I realize that the backlinking process has to be repeated, which is probably the biggest pain of all.

Can someone clarify that for me?

I believe they do get rights to your content, but proably not exclusive, it's always a good idea to save a web page image of your posts as a quick backup measure.

THe first site to get an article may be top ranked by google as the originator, Hubpages requires that an article be unique material, though I have not tested their copyscapee like capabilities.

Free sites are still useful as additional backlink sources for your main site, I don't know that classic ring configurations are smart these days.
