Stealing My Articles To Outcompete Me...A New Low

Yup, you heard right.

I was searching snippets of my articles to try and connect with webmasters to increase my syndication and I found somebody using MY articles backlinking to THEIR site, which is now ranked higher than my site for my keyword phrase!

There's more!

This isn't an affiliate offer I'm linking to...it's my first product that I ever made and may I say it's an extremely high quality product that cost me thousands of dollars to prepare for, record and edit and that I'm very proud of. It took me years working in a very tough profession (classical music world) to acquire the expertise for.

IM is a beautiful thing that allows honest people to escape the 9-5 grind and live amazing, location independent lives. Yet there's an ugly side so repugnant it makes you want to throw up.

I contacted the dude and kindly asked him to do the right thing.

Thanks for letting me blow off some steam Warriors and Warriorettes!

That's crazy. It's unbelievable how lazy and scandalous some people are.

Same thing happened to me. The more I checked up on my articles, the more instances of people using them to link to their site. I decided I had better things to do than chase violators.

So sorry. I know how this feels, like someone punches you in the gut.

If asking does not result in this guy taking your content off his site, I would create an email addy from the "legal department" of your site and send an email similar to this:

The article entitled "[article title]" was republished without our consent. Thus, it constitutes plagiarism and/or copyright infringement.

This article was copied from our website without permission: [list the link where you found YOUR work].

Please remove this article from your website immediately.

This email will serve as a general cease-and-desist (C&D) notice.

If you are unable or unwilling to make the requested changes, we will file a DMCA complaint against the website referenced herein.

Please note that this could negatively affect the status of your site.

Thank you for taking the appropriate actions.

I'd be careful about having a "legal department". While that does not say attorney, that is the implication. Either an attorney is sending the notice or there is an attorney to review notices sent out by a paralegal or someone else.

That can be a crime. Moreover, for various reasons, issues usually go south for people I see doing that. There's nothing like taking a good complaint about copyright infringement and having it blow up in your face when suddenly you are the one being investigated.

It is not a new thing. You do need to be vigilant about making people do the right thing.

Kindsvater is an attorney. I would listen to him.

I don't address such notices from the "legal dept", but rather "copyright enforcement".

It really sucks to have someone using our original articles to rank their site. Yet it is difficult to prevent while we are still a small scale organisation.

I choose to think that there are better things to do than to chase these people. Perhaps we can look at the way they used our articles and study how they managed to rank up more effectively.

Or we could also spend the time writing more original articles and connecting with our subscribers and help them out wherever we can. I believe that builds a better business for us.

Good luck and thanks for sharing your concerns.

How was this person able to find your articles and how did they use them to link to their site? Did they copy them and resubmit to article directories? I write articles for a living and am curious if there are ways to prevent this or how to catch it if it does.

I'm pretty sure they took these particular articles from EzineArticles and just replaced my resource box with backlinks to their own offer.
