It's a double edge if I may say, because it can be of use for your clients/customers to directly contact you if they have inquiries or needs clarification to what you can offer or what you want them to do. On the other side, there might be cases wherein you will be called not for the sake of interest to your postings, but for the sake of making friends with you. I have already done that and it's a bit annoying that there are those who would call but then they are just trying to ask more about your personal life and more.
There's no really danger to it, but you have to expect those kinds of prank calls.

My company's 24/7 toll free number is on our main websites, our support page, etc., and it's a BIG help. In the service business, it helps to let people know they can call if they want.

If you want to generate business, you must have good contact info. I'm not sure if there is any risk associated with leaving your phone number unless you agree to meet someone. However it can be annoying as you may get prank calls or a lot of unnecessary calls. You might consider getting another line strictly for your business calls. That way it won't interfere with your other types of communication.

Bear in mind it's subject to being scraped by search engines and could be floating around the web longer than you would think. You could use a free Googlevoice number that torwards to your regular phone, (there's a change if you ever had to change the googlevoice number)

Many hardcore marketers use skype and aim.

    Hey Marian,

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Since you're offering a service it makes sense to "expose" your contact details, besides, you can always hang up if you have to. : )

If it's a personal number, I would say no.

But if you have a business number, then sure.

In my early days I would gladly give out my home number to clients.. big mistake

With the time difference, some clients around the world don't realize.. or just don't care that they are phoning at silly-o-clock in the morning.

Been woken up a few times by clients shouting "my website's wrecked! my website's wrecked!", and I had to walk them through clearing their cache at 4am.

A great reason not to give out your number! That must have been an unplesant phone-call lol.

instead, you can put a Skype call button, when clients will click on this button then the Skype software will automatically start functioning on their computer ( if installed).

Works both ways - for some clients, having a phone number to contact helps (and gives credibility to your offer).

OTOH - you could end up with a lot of garbage calls to sort through.

Either way - don't use your main (home) number. Either get yourself another line, or even a prepaid mobile card; in the worst case, you can terminate it or switch to another number.

Same goes for IM, skype and other contact methods.

yeah as others have said, skype is the way to go. this means those that want to get in touch with you and have a chat can, those that dont want to, wont. you wont have any issues with prank calling and you can remove people from your skype and block them if they are causing you problems. gchat is also quite useful for an instant messaging service, most people have a gmail account and its a great and quick way for you to start a chat with potential customers or clients.

If you can...have a separate number for personal use and for business use...business greatly counts on "contacts".

I'd rather leave my email and then if they want to talk, I can give it to them. I wouldn't want my phone number on a public forum.

Well being that I'm running a business I would leave my (888) number which is a 24/7 7 days a week contact number for me.

Solves the problem of giving out your business number when your business number is your personal number.
