Question About AWeber Scam Emails

A lot of repetitive threads about this. Which itself is interesting ...

How is it so many Warriors have received this spam?

I didn't. Almost makes me feel left out. But I think that is the real story here.

What email addresses are getting this spam? Regular email? Signups to a particular service? AWeber addresses?

I have not received any of them either. I almost feel left out too. I get what seems to be a gazillion spam messages a day. I have multiple eMail addresses. 30+. I have addresses I use for my Aweber lists. I have addresses I use to subscribe to Aweber lists. I have my eMail I use to manage my Aweber account. And so on.

I have not received this particular eMail at any of them.

    Brian,

It can't be just Aweber addresses. I haven't gotten any copies of this.

I got one of these emails (guess I'm lucky...lol). I posted my story and pictures of the emails (both the scam one and AWeber's response when I asked about it) on my blog at PotPieGirl (dot) com.

        Things that made me suspicious:

-- It was sent to a gmail address which is NOT connected to any of my AWeber accounts.

-- The "from" name was Aweber - not AWeber (note the 'w')

Naturally, the email got my attention (plus gmail is usually really good at weeding that junk out).

The email asks you to click on a link to reset your password (never a good sign).

I logged in to each of my AWeber accounts and not a single one had a notice or warning for me. I then contacted support and asked about the email.

They said it wasn't from them.

After posting my story on my blog, many others have said they got this email too. Oddly, many of them don't even HAVE an AWeber account.

        Very odd.

I received it to the email I put as the 'reply to' email when I send IM related broadcasts from aweber.

I use that same email for many things but I imagined that's how they might have gathered the emails. Sign up to a lot of aweber lists, spam the reply to email.

This is highly targeted and not seemingly a useful "mass market" spam target, such as hoping someone has a Bank of America account.

With so many Warrior threads, and so many marketers complaining, it makes me think the source is uncomfortably close. Not that a marketer we know is necessarily at fault -- though perhaps a big list has been unknowingly compromised.

This was a pretty clever email and I almost fell for it, but instead of resetting the password I called customer support because I've been traveling in the RV to various states, so the warning about people logging into my account from various IP addresses seemed very plausible. Very glad I called to make sure.

I got the scam email too, to my gmail addy, which is not connected to any Aweber accounts or lists.

I have though started receiving a LOT of spam in the last few weeks that is connected to Aweber lists I have signed up for. What is scary is that not only do they go to my various sign up email address but they also include the alias names that I use in the name fields. So the spammers not only snagged the email addys but the associated names too.

Are these ones you've had for a while?

Wasn't Aweber hacked into a few months ago? If so, maybe they are just starting to put whatever they grabbed to use.

I almost fell for it too until I noticed the domain it came from. I contacted Aweber and this is what they had to say:

Thank you for reporting this and we are aware of the phishing
        email that was sent.

We have taken the steps to have that domain shut down and have
a formal investigation going to find out the originating source of the
        email in question.

I apologize for any inconvenience and if you have any other questions
about this issue or the security of your AWeber account, please let us
        know.

If you have clicked on any link in that email, please go to *link removed*
immediately and reset your password manually.

Please remember that we will never ask you to provide your old password when
resetting your password, nor will we ever direct you to a domain other than
        aweber.com.

        Thank you again.

    Just got this from Aweber:

Hi Rick I'd like to take a moment to talk about Internet security and your AWeber account. AWeber will NEVER ask you to login to any domain other than aweber.com to manage your account. Only enter your AWeber password at aweber.com. When in doubt, go directly to aweber.com only, instead of clicking on a link in an email. We will never email or call you asking for login information about your account. If you have any questions, you can contact AWeber using the phone number and contact form on our website, Email Marketing Software & Email Marketing Services from AWeber. Thanks for reading, and for using AWeber! Cheers, Tom Kulzer CEO and Founder AWeber Communications
Hope that helps clear things up.

I have a feeling they were hacked yet again.

Another drop in open rates will dictate it or not.

        Jason,
I have a feeling they were hacked yet again.
Highly unlikely. I have too many addresses in the system that weren't hit.

Pretty much any source that consists of IMers could be the origin of the list. Without someone catching a trap address in the send, it's going to be hard to locate.

Nearly fell for this, but something just didn't look right about the url, and straight away my browser spotted that it wasn't a correct https:// that I would have expected for a secure site.

Logged into the account and no messages, but decided to change the password anyway just to be sure :-)

Looks like we have some quite clever scammers out there, as this was almost believable

It has been several months since the noted hack, and yea, I have had these out there for a while, so it could be a delay before they started using them.

I get the "normal' amount of spam all the time and didn't really notice anything major prior until the Names started showing up in the subject lines and message.

I notice the email subjects when the say "Hey VegasGreg" or my 'special names' I have used. (Finally a good tactic for spammers - lol)

I have not received any of these either. My junk mail is empty of them also.

I consider myself lucky - I have had enough with technology problems in the past few weeks.

Best advise - when in doubt always call - it is worth the time

The email addresses I got hit at were NOT the ones I have on file with Aweber, nor are they email addresses I use to subscribe to lists with... based on what I'm seeing, it's more likely the result of someone hijacking a JV type list, a JV network of some kind, or potentially a message board... either way, it's targeted for sure.

Someone either sold a list, stole a list via hacking, or had an existing JV list and was hoping to score a few new lists for themselves...

I'm guessing it's a biz opp pusher looking to login to a few accounts, download the lists of known players in the field, and mail out using the name of the account holder in an effort to make some quick and easy money.
