How to transfer / sell a list....uhhh, are you allowed to do this??

Hi Guys

I see in many site flipping guides that it helps if you have a list to sell with your site (I have about 600 for my IM niche) but firstly, how on Earth would you transfer a list to somebody else's account (aweber) and secondly, I thought you weren't actually allowed to sell lists...you know...."we won't sell your names to anybody"..or does that just mean not selling them to 3rd party advertisers?

Cheers / beers
Phil

I would think that if your subscribers were subscribing to the newsletter or something of the site you are flipping that it would be fine. I mean they are subscribed because they want more info pertaining to the site you are selling. So the new owner will continue to provide them that.

Yes. They are subscribed because they want information from THAT niche. For all they know, someone from across the world could be writing it for you to send, but all they care is that they are getting information that's relative to what they signed up for!

    Hi Phil,

I believe you answered your own question. The key is to look into your terms of service/privacy policies. What did you tell your subscribers you'd be doing with their names? If you said you wouldn't share them (sell them, give them away, etc)... then you should stick with your promises.

However, if you plan to sell your sites in the future, then have someone create TOS/privacy policies that make it clear their information may be shared/sold.

    Cheers,
    Becky

Ok guys - thanks, all makes sense.

...so what about the mechanics of actually moving yoiur site to another person's aweber account? Is that possible?

Remember also it's how you said the information would be used in your privacy policy and your squeeze page that dictates the freedom you have with your list.

    Here's the deal...

    Your list IS an asset...

That asset is owned by your business...

If you sell that business your assets go with it...

Aweber makes it very easy to do this and it's totally legal...

What you do is you actually sell your A/R account with the site...

Aweber can instruct you on the proper way of doing this...

    Good luck
