Can Coupon Codes Boost Conversion?

I have seen many sites where they give you a coupon
code for an instant 50% off their product...

I know results may be dependant on the niche but just
curious if anyone has tested it for themselves and seen
a boost in conversion.

if it is working for others i'll give it a go myself and post
the results from my split test.

Results will vary depending on the offer, the niche, where the traffic is coming from, etc. You hit the nail on the head with "tested it for themselves" ... you'll never know unless you give it a shot; although, they wouldn't create scripts for instant coupons on sales pages if at least a few people weren't seeing an increase in conversions

Also, this tactic might work a lot better when marketing to your list and giving a limited 50% discount on an offer (creating scarcity, fear of loss, etc.)

    Hope that helps.

I don't see why it would hurt conversions:

After all, it's just another bribe or appeal to a prospect that might trigger the sale and the more of them, the merrier.

No one will be offended by the coupon stuff.

    Hope This Helps!!

    TL

Ps. Of course a simple test would answer a lot of questions right?

    Hi,

from my experience, coupon codes always seem to work. If you're married, think about it -- how many times does your wife open a flyer so she can get something that she probably really doesn't need, but decides to get it anyways because there's a coupon for it? (actually, coupons are a great)

Guess I am just looking for a push to take the time and set the whole thing up. My mind tells me this is an extra step for people to take so it would result in fewer sales.

some will find they are getting a deal but for others it might just complicate things.

again not asking if it will work for me, just seeing if it has worked for any warriors who have tested it.

When sales are slow on my website. I email my list a coupon for 35% to 50% off their entire purchase and I get sales in from my list. ore than half of my list purchase using the coupons. Others purchase when I add more products and then browse the site and add more to the basket. Coupons work good in my opinion.

The only way to answer that question is for you to test, test, and test even further.

In my market (health) results vary among many variables. Overall, I see a enhancement to conversions.

Coupons are just another benefit. If you spin it right this can be tipping point in getting the sale. People like the fact they have got something cheaper, or got something extra, ergo "bonuses". Anything that gives you a selling point or edge is worth it.

Yeah, coupon codes work just like Big Mike says.

He sent me an email with one yesterday, thirty seconds later I'm logged into PayPal sending the cash. I know how Pavlov's dogs felt now :-)

NICE! I thought this thread had died but so happy it didn't.!

So this week I will toss up a 50% coupon code, I'm thinking I can charge the same amount but just double the perceived price.

Sprinkle a little urgency telling them this coupon is time sensitive and presto!

I had another thought of even have a exit pop up offering a 75% off code to save some sales that might have been lost.

Now the question is where can I find the coupon script? I belive it is done in php and there has to be a simple free option out there.

I will post the results from my split test and give away the layout I used if my results are anything close to what Big Mike claims LOL

Don't forget to do the math. If you give out a 50% coupon, you'll need your conversions to be 50% higher. Sometimes I'll give coupon codes to my affiliates, so that they can run promotionals with them.

I recently took a coupon off of one of my products, only to find out that the coupon was hurting my bottom line. I saw an immediate spike in my profit after getting rid of it. So I think it depends on the amount on the coupon, and what you're using it for. Some people like to use them to get opt ins, which can be a good idea.

    hey garyv,

I have seen the coupon code as a incentive to opt-in but what I don't like with that is the reader will know they are being sold something right away.

I am planning on doubling my current price so it will be perceived as a higher ticket item and I will make the same amount per sale as i currently do. Beside the payment option i will include a graphic that states save 50% off by entering in this coupon code below.

I have seen this used on survey sites with a high gravity so if its working in that niche i'm sure it will work for others.

I have heard of this method lowering conversions for a few others and this is why i was hesitent to test it out for myself.

I think now that so long as the actual coupon code has been stated right above the coupon field box, it will have people take action by entering in the code warming them up to select their payment option.

anyway its worth a shot and will be interested to see what the results from my split test will show.

Having the little "enter copn code" box could hurt conversions.

Ive seen a few people mention they search for couons when they see it and most of the time never go back to the site if they dont find one. They say they feel cheated.

That's one reason why on my order forms there's a coupon code box, and a note next to it that says: "If you don't have a coupon code, use the code XXXXXXX to get an instant 10% off your order".

I use coupon codes for my affiliates to track and credit sales. Instead of them issuing URL's with a URL variable like "affid=A625X" they use URL's that include a URL variable like "discountcode=A625X-20OFF.

Works well, and keeps shoppers and others from dropping the affiliate ID code from links.

I've found it has a little, but not by much... What I do find helpful for returning visitors, is to send them a custom made letter attached with a coupon / cashback offers... I've just started a new project on ebay, documenting all my moves, etc, already in the first 4 days out of 22 customers, 5 people have sent back their coupon to cash in, and made another order. While 12 others who didn't cash in their coupon made an order too for over $100.00
