I Quit My Job - It CAN Be Done!

Since I owe everything to the good people of this Forum, I thought it only fitting to share this with you:

Last week I turned in my letter of resignation, and tomorrow is my last day on the JOB! I'm walking away from a six-figure income, health benefits, 401(k)...and I couldn't be more excited!

I now join the ranks of full-time internet marketing!

It is definitely a scary thing to walk away from the security of employment, and I'm not currently making online the amount I want or even need to be making.

But I saw the day job as an anchor, an obstacle that I was always having to work around...so many late hours, time compromised with my family, etc., that I felt the only way for me to actually "go big" was to quit the job.

My focus is on product creation...it's something that comes naturally to me, and actually is a part of what I've been doing in my day job for several years.

If quitting your job is your dream, here's my encouragement and advice:

Stop treating IM as a hobby. Hobbyists don't MAKE money, they LOSE money...because they chase after every new idea and "auto-riches" nonsense that comes along.

Get support. I'm not talking about a mastermind group, necessarily, although those are great. But your first big step should be telling someone very close to you what you're doing. This could be your spouse, a sibling, parent, best friend. For me it was my wife. I absolutely needed her buy-in and understanding. Now she's just as excited as I am.

Have patience. Look, I want you to buy every product I create, and the same goes for every other marketer out there (you should have the same philosophy about whatever it is you're selling to your market), but understand that things take time. If you're building websites, it takes time to see results. Stop hopping from one thing to another. That's what hobbyists do.

Get rid of your debt. As much as possible, get your monthly spending down. I haven't done that, but it's something I realize is essential. Don't look at having to replace every bit of what you make today. As you start making money, pay down debts, so that your ability to quit can be that much quicker!

Have a plan. Before you read another lick about SEO or whatever you think is going to make you filthy rich, write down an actual plan of attack. Determine how much you REALLY have to make to quit your job, determine exactly what you'll do to move yourself in that direction, determine exactly how many hours per week you're willing to commit to that...you get the idea. Without a plan it's chaos. You cannot succeed amidst chaos.

Have fun! The whole reason we embark on internet marketing is for freedom and a greater life balance. If you're doing it for "$10k a month," keep dreaming. That's not it. It's for a happier life. The money will come if you work at it.

    Awesome! Congrats on quitting your job! I am the 'wife' and I am the one doing the IM while my husband is at his job. I dream of making enough to one day replace his income so he can spend more time at home with us. So, until then I will keep doing the basics, learn more as I go, and keep at it everyday!

    Congratulations! My biggest piece of advice for going full-time is to make a schedule. My biggest mistake was waking up and doing whatever the heck I wanted to do. I had no schedule, no to do list, and really no direction each day.

    I would just get up and do what I thought needed to be done.

    This ended up being one of the biggest mistakes in my business. I did not realize this mistake till about three years later but I did realize it.

    I could have grow my business so much faster and so much bigger if I would just have focused.

    So, as you go onto your new venture working for yourself remember that you still do have work to do. Whether that work is managing the employees that are doing the work for you or actually doing the work yourself. You still need to get out there and do it.

      Wow, isn't that the truth, Shannon. This has got to be my biggest weakness right now. Not having a schedule or to do list for every day will absolutely kill your business and thwart any kind of progress. Thanks for the reminder.

      And awesome success story. Glad to see see some hard work paying off. I have been a full time Imer for about 3 years now and there is no looking back. But you are right that it DOES take a lot of hard work. Nothing can replace that!

      Really sound advise. Without a schedule you may find you are working harder and more than youever did, and you may not be accomplishing what you set out to do. Schedule your holiday breaks and your quitting time, then stick to it. Good luck to you. Dont forget to have fun.

      I agree with Shannon. I know a number of people who quit their jobs and decided to just "go with the flow." You didn't do that before and you can't really do that now.

      Also, having a schedule makes it easier to tell your friends and family "no" when they want you to interrupt your work day to do things with or for them. I find it is difficult to help others understand that "self-employed" does not equal "unemployed."

      Great advice, Shannon. Very true. My day job was very regimented...calls, appointments, meetings, paperwork, etc. Keeping a calendar of activities is crucial! I have already felt myself slipping a bit. Just so happy to walk around the house in my flip flops!

    Awesome stuff mate, no better feeling and looks like you have the right mindset + already making VERY good progress in the income department.

    It CAN get to be a grind some of the time but I would NEVER go back to working for someone else.

    In fact recently took the next step and went from sole trader to a limited company!

    You tell that to anyone that knew me 10 years ago and they wouldn't believe you

      And you bring up a good point...business structure. Currently, I'm simply accepting money into a Paypal business account. Do I need to set up an LLC? For those full-timers in the US, how do you maximize tax benefits of write-offs, health benefits, etc.?

        When you and I first met and we talked I could tell you had the stuff to make it and you did. Congrats my friend.

        The best thing you can do before you go any further is to consult with your accountant and attorney, to advise you which is better for you, LLC or other form incorporation. Make sure you talk to both and then make your decision.

        My accountant and attorney recently had me make changes that will make a good deal of difference and help me maximize my tax benefits.

        Also yesterday a very common sense report was released by Jason Fladlien and Wilson Mattos http://www.warriorforum.com/newreply...eply&p=4356497, and it has some very, very valuable business advice. These 2 know of what they speak. I strongly recommend it to you and anyone else that is reading this post. Especially if PayPal is your main payment processor.

            congrats again!

            One advice from somebody who's being there, and proudly wearing the shirt...

            ... if you work "from home" and have a family, there will always be interferences between your private life and your business. What helps me a lot is NOT to distinguish between the two, weird as that may sound at the beginning.

            In my experience, there are 2 sorts of tasks, both private and biz-related:

            1. The time suckers.

              They tie up time and energy, but need to be done.

              The time suckers can be large or small, and they can be both private or biz-related: For me, it doesn't really make a difference if I have to call a doctor to arrange an appointment for the kids, or if I have to send a necessary, but boring email to a biz partner.

              Both are time suckers.
            2. The productive, enjoyable stuff -- battery rechargers.

              That's the stuff that you enjoy doing, that moves you forward, that re-charges your batteries.

              In private life, that could be playing with your kids, doing sports, gardening, whatever you enjoy doing.

              In business, those are the things which are fun, which move your business forward, which keep your brain occupied in a positive way.

            If you are your own boss, the two important tricks are...

            • to develop strategies for dealing with the time suckers. Outsourcing, effective time management, whatever.

              Try to get rid of both private and business time suckers as much and as fast as you can.

              And don't forget about "local" outsourcing, btw -- an outsourcer who does your linkbuilding is great. An "outsourcer" who cleans your bathroom is priceless for the whole family!
            • and the second trick is to move as many things as possible from the "time sucker" into the "enjoyable" category.

              That's in particular true for some private things: Playing with your kids can feel like the worst time sucker ever if you're tired, exhausted, and with your mind still back in your emails. Playing with your kids can be the best battery recharger ever if you're focused on them, relaxed, and can enjoy the afternoon.

              So the trick is a switch in mindset: change such things from a "nuisance" into a "battery recharger", all in your mind. That alone will make a huge difference on some of those days...

            Hope this helps a little bit to ease the change...

            (Not sayin' that I always live by these rules, but it definitely helps when I do.)

      After that, I had it in my head that I would quit by the end of the year. Over the past couple of months I had started working from home a few days a week, which helped tremendously!

      But the the "I'm done" moment came last week when I got a new Senior VP over me who basically demanded I report to the office every day.

      I knew that was going to be a huge setback for my online business, so I resigned.

      It's going to be different for everyone. But I had that goal of 2011, and I made it stick! Wish I could lose weigh so effectively

        Great to see that you wouldn't be shackled down by the VP...

        Regarding weight loss, I would encourage you to schedule in a fitness and nutrition program. I have heard that some IM'ers spend the beginning of their morning for about 15-30 minutes on planning, goal setting, praying, reading motivational books, etc. And then they about another 30 minutes on exercise. And then they are charged up to tackle the day with a stronger focus on their goals. I saw one well known IM'er who is doing the P90X program...

        The exercise programs that I have found that have worked in the past, and which I need to get back into again, are put out by beachbody.com who put on the late night infomercials for P90X, Insanity, etc They are all dvd type programs that you follow along at home. I'm not an affiliate or representative, but have used their programs and seen great results. And they also allow you to workout at home which is a huge bonus. You will need to get some equipment like a few weights, etc.

        The programs that I would recommend are
        10minutetrainer.com - you can start with just 10 minutes a day
        power90.com - this program takes about 20 to 40 minutes a day
        slimin6.com

        And just start where you are, start small and build up for fitness & weight loss. Also eat a nutritional snack in between meals like fruit, yogurt, etc. And then you should be able to eat smaller portions for your main meals. Eating more often helps keep your metabolism higher for fat burning.

      I believe I can make more money online than at a job, and without the irritation and whimsy of employers.

    It is definitely a scary thing to walk away from the security of employment, and I'm not currently making online the amount I want or even need to be making.

    But I saw the day job as an anchor, an obstacle that I was always having to work around...so many late hours, time compromised with my family, etc., that I felt the only way for me to actually "go big" was to quit the job.

    My focus is on product creation...it's something that comes naturally to me, and actually is a part of what I've been doing in my day job for several years.

    If quitting your job is your dream, here's my encouragement and advice:

    Stop treating IM as a hobby. Hobbyists don't MAKE money, they LOSE money...because they chase after every new idea and "auto-riches" nonsense that comes along.

    Get support. I'm not talking about a mastermind group, necessarily, although those are great. But your first big step should be telling someone very close to you what you're doing. This could be your spouse, a sibling, parent, best friend. For me it was my wife. I absolutely needed her buy-in and understanding. Now she's just as excited as I am.

    Have patience. Look, I want you to buy every product I create, and the same goes for every other marketer out there (you should have the same philosophy about whatever it is you're selling to your market), but understand that things take time. If you're building websites, it takes time to see results. Stop hopping from one thing to another. That's what hobbyists do.

    Get rid of your debt. As much as possible, get your monthly spending down. I haven't done that, but it's something I realize is essential. Don't look at having to replace every bit of what you make today. As you start making money, pay down debts, so that your ability to quit can be that much quicker!

    Have a plan. Before you read another lick about SEO or whatever you think is going to make you filthy rich, write down an actual plan of attack. Determine how much you REALLY have to make to quit your job, determine exactly what you'll do to move yourself in that direction, determine exactly how many hours per week you're willing to commit to that...you get the idea. Without a plan it's chaos. You cannot succeed amidst chaos.

    Have fun! The whole reason we embark on internet marketing is for freedom and a greater life balance. If you're doing it for "$10k a month," keep dreaming. That's not it. It's for a happier life. The money will come if you work at it.

      My Goal is to stop this year december. It just got a bit harder because my wifes quit here job because of burn out and she needs me to be around the house. And I had my first kid born this year januari, he is great but has some trouybles so we have to see the doctors regulary. But still I will succeed at this. I have some people working for me from the Phillipins to get my niche sites on first place Google. But I don't see a lot of progress yet so that is kind of torture but I need to keep the long term goal in front of me. And I do suck at putting things in order like said before in other peoples reply's. Lists and al that stuff, but I am getting better at it step by step.

        You're on your way! Obviously, you'll need to start getting regular IM income in the door.

        Work backwards from that December goal. Determine exactly how much money you'll need to be making to quit your job. Figure out what your wife can do to help you. Can she manage the VAs while you push toward creating some products suitable to your chosen niches?

      Congrats! I remember when I went full time, it is a exciting, scary, in short Epic! To be able to believe in yourself is a huge step in success in anything in life.

      There was a comment here that resonated with me, make and keep a schedule. A schedule is just a set of tasks that promote your overall plan.

      Revisit that plan and design your schedule according. This has worked for me.

      Sometimes I feel overwhelmed, I have to take some time and refocus, this is what works for me.

      I quit my job in May and it was the BEST thing I ever did! I feel so free and empowered.

      It is also scary, emotional and there are ups and downs. The biggest thing is to have a plan and FOCUS.

      I have a whiteboard with my income goal and broken down into how many sales that is and how much traffic that takes.

      I have a daily list of task and I set a timer for each one. I work much faster with the timer clicking and it allows me to move through my daily task very quickly.

      I also have a long term list that I mark off as I get to it.

      Congrats! Remember this is a business and you must be VERY organized to keep it up and running.

      That's definitely a more responsible route. If you get going, you won't have to calculate things like that. Here's what I mean.

      Let's say you get to where your IM income is HALF of your salary. Take your IM income and throw it at all your revolving debt (credit cards). Pay those off first, then build up a savings account of 3-6 months salary. Then go after your car payment (if you want to own it), and then mortgage.

      At some point before your IM income is double your salary, you're going to have the same thought as me: that you could actually make more IM dough if you had the free time.

    I'm lucky that like you, my fiancee is REALLY supportive and encourages me everyday to try to better myself.

    Aside from the freedom of not working for someone else, providing for her and our future kids is my driving force.

    I'm yet to get into product creation. I've thought about it but I want to make sure whenever I start offering a product, it'll be something I'll be PROUD of.

    Now be sure to crank it up 10 times since you've got all that extra time to work on YOUR business from now on

    Edit: Please be sure to let us know if you decide on an LLC or some other type of business entity. I'm sure many here would appreciate further info on how to deal with taxes when doing IM.

    I know full well how scary that can be, I didn't exactly quit my job but I was made redundant and that lit a fire under my arse to get going with my own business.

    Nothing like fear to get you motivated I can tell you :-)

    I now have my own VA business and am earning more than when I was in full time employment and I love what I do.

    As for my better half and the support side of things, she was actually faced with redundancy as well last year and came into the business with me and now we work together from home.

    It's a great feeling to be ploughing our own furrow and both of us would have to be dragged kicking and screaming back to a regular style JOB!!

I miss the buzy-ness of it. I miss coming home at the end of the day and sinking into the sofa, tired but satisfied that I had done something good, especially if I got expected results.

    Working from home takes some getting used to. It takes discipline, boredom sets in quickly and all kinds of distractions.

    By the time I wake up, people have already left for work so the street is so quiet and occasionally someone walking a dog would go by. You feel isolated but again, I have never regretted my decision as the positives outweigh the negatives. We humans are never satisfied, when it is cold we complain,and complain some more when it is hot.
    I used to tell retirees what I wouldn't give to be able to live like them, never having to take orders from anyone, waking up whenever my body felt like waking up and never having to endure rush hour traffic. Now I am living that life and ....well.

      By the time I wake up, people have already left for work so the street is so quiet and occasionally someone walking a dog would go by. You feel isolated but again, I have never regretted my decision as the positives outweigh the negatives. We humans are never satisfied, when it is cold we complain,and complain some more when it is hot.
      I used to tell retirees what I wouldn't give to be able to live like them, never having to take orders from anyone, waking up whenever my body felt like waking up and never having to endure rush hour traffic. Now I am living that life and ....well.

      You bring up an interesting point. It so happens I live in a neighborhood where many of the breadwinners (ie, husband, fathers) work from home. They're not self-employed, necessarily...they telecommute. So you see dads in shorts walking their kids to school, etc. And since I've been doing the same and working out of my home office for a while, I'm hoping the transition won't be too jarring.

    Interesting you say get support. My wife is my biggest supporters. She thinks the IM stuff is great. I know some Warriors talk about family friends thinking IM is a joke and not a real business, so I'm fortunate. Sounds like you are as well.

    My first site made $5k before I had ever heard about IM.

    I built that site for a hobby of mine, decided to add Adsense on the site. Adsense worked out so good, I decided to see what other ways I could monetize the site, then expanded with multiple similar sites.

    I was layed off & forced into IM full-time (best thing that ever happend to me).

      Perhaps we disagree with my phrase "hobbyist," but hopefully we agree with the "get rich quick and mindless" folks that are out there. That's my point, and my encouragement -- that if you truly desire to leave your job you'll likely need an attitude and mindset of someone building a business rather than someone with a whimsical approach.

    I also quit my job this week! Not out of choice though. I am a dancer by trade and work part time as a gogo dancer. I had to quit because I am pregnant. I have now substituted my dancing income with my income online and am hoping soon I will be making more money online than dancing!

    It can be a real boost to quit your job as you are not tied down to anything. You have to make it your full time income with IM and it becomes a challenge and a goal!

        Just taking a break over the weekend, but now trying to catch up on this thread.

        But even that idea -- the weekend -- seems a little strange now. Weekends for many is about how you dress, when you get up, and obviously, what you do with your day.

        For full-tim IMers, it's quite a bit different. My new "uniform" is a t-shirt and shorts. I anticipate getting up around the same time as always (because of my little girls jumping on me). But the activities now between week days and week ends are blurred.

        The schedule is key!

        P.S. This officially is my FIRST DAY of self-employment!!

      I'll answer both of these questions: Yes, I will continue to create WSOs, as long as I can bring valuable tools and information to the Forum. I believe WSOs are an outstanding way to generate income. But you CANNOT work with yourself in mind. You've got to think about your future customers and their needs, not your own financial goals.

      Bassem, my method has been through the creation of WSOs and affiliate marketing.

    I was so exciting to hear your advice, and the second one hit me.

    I quit my job a month ago. That was not a easy decision. Finally I did it with my wife's support. She have no idea about IM, but when I told her my plan , my idea, she was so exciting too.

    For now, as you said, I need a plan. I am not a guru in IM, and confused many shiny ideas here. They all great, but I think the best way is to choose the one, and take action.

    I hope that I can get some fruits 2 maybe 3 months later.

    I too quit my job once I realised it was never about the money but the freedom and value I can bring to others and myself. I set a target of achieving twice my annual income in 18 months and it took me 11 months, so I know you must have put in the hours man. Enjoy the journey!

    If quitting your job is your dream, here's my encouragement and advice:

    Stop treating IM as a hobby. Hobbyists don't MAKE money, they LOSE money...because they chase after every new idea and "auto-riches" nonsense that comes along.

    Get support. I'm not talking about a mastermind group, necessarily, although those are great. But your first big step should be telling someone very close to you what you're doing. This could be your spouse, a sibling, parent, best friend. For me it was my wife. I absolutely needed her buy-in and understanding. Now she's just as excited as I am.

    Have patience. Look, I want you to buy every product I create, and the same goes for every other marketer out there (you should have the same philosophy about whatever it is you're selling to your market), but understand that things take time. If you're building websites, it takes time to see results. Stop hopping from one thing to another. That's what hobbyists do.

    Get rid of your debt. As much as possible, get your monthly spending down. I haven't done that, but it's something I realize is essential. Don't look at having to replace every bit of what you make today. As you start making money, pay down debts, so that your ability to quit can be that much quicker!

    Have a plan. Before you read another lick about SEO or whatever you think is going to make you filthy rich, write down an actual plan of attack. Determine how much you REALLY have to make to quit your job, determine exactly what you'll do to move yourself in that direction, determine exactly how many hours per week you're willing to commit to that...you get the idea. Without a plan it's chaos. You cannot succeed amidst chaos.

    Have fun! The whole reason we embark on internet marketing is for freedom and a greater life balance. If you're doing it for "$10k a month," keep dreaming. That's not it. It's for a happier life. The money will come if you work at it.

    Wow, good for you! Congratulations! It's wonderful to hear these stories as provides encouragement to say that it can be done. The Internet is one of the last great opportunities with a low barrier to entry. However given the ease with which people can enter also increases the competition. However if you can outlast the 99% of people who give up early and continue to hone your craft, the opportunities will improve and you'll find ways to make good money.

      You're right, Mark. And I don't think it has to be an all-or-nothing type deal. As I've been saying, take your initial IM earnings and do something very smart with it: either by reinvesting directly back into your biz that that it causes a multiplier effect in your earnings, or by paying down debt, which can act as a "pay raise" by lowering your monthly obligations.

    That's an inspiring story and thanks for sharing your story with others who may be struggling to keep on track.

    Personally, I got fired from my last REAL job because I couldn't stop talking/thinking about my online endeavors. That was a good 11-12 years ago. Was the best thing that ever happened to me and I've never looked back. Life has been great ever since.

    Good luck and even when things get hard (because they might), don't give up. Security is rarely more than just an illusion of security. The only real security is in knowing that without anyone else signing your paycheck, and even if you lost everything tomorrow, you'd be OK because you know you have the skills to replicate your successes quickly and easily. Investing in yourself is awesome!

    Yeah, quite true, real success is achievable online and much more than many have ever imagined, I AGREE with you in this, many marketers who would have otherwise achieved success end up cursing and frustrated simply because they lacked a simple ingredient to their success, CONSISTENCY and DAILY METHOD of operation. Breaking the bank and spending money does not equal to more success. Consistent action is the real measure of success.
