I am curious as to how many of you have switched to a smartphone, like iPhone or Droid. My life changed when I got my first Blackberry and changed again when I upgraded to an iPhone a few years later.

Do you have a smartphone or do you still use a regular cell?

  • I have a smartphone. Android to be specific. To be honest, its the biggest time wasting device ever. I like the calendar functionality and thats about it. And all this talk about mobile tinternet. I mean, have you searched stuff on your mobile? Its painful.

    • I have a smart phone - iPhone. Although it's coming to the end of its life and the battery dies too quickly. I'm thinking of going Android but then I do like a lot of iPhone features.

      I wouldn't be without mine. I started with a Windows smartphone, went to a blackberry and then to an iPhone. It's helped me out on occasions when I've needed to looking urgent stuff for business that just couldn't wait until I got home.

      Typing is a pain, agreed. :p

    • I 100% disagree. My guess is that you have the wrong phone. I use an iPhone 4 and can't live without it.
  • Smartphone user since the iPhone 3G came out.

    Being the tech geek I am, I upgraded to the iPhone 4 after that, and then switched to an HTC HD7 to try Windows Phone 7 platform.

    Next time I'll go with an Android phone. That way I can decide which platform I like the best.

    • I have a mobile phone as they call them here and so rarely use it that £10 credit lasts me more than a year and it's rarely charged up. So I can imagine life without it as long as I've got a landline.

      I keep taking a peek at smart phones etc. when I'm in the town. That's because I like my gadgets, but I can't justify treating myself until I can convince myself that I need one for business. So I keep on reading threads like this until I'm inspired.
  • Got a smartphone, Samsung Galaxy Mini. Actually I'm using it right now.

    I don't know but I feel ok with it. The only downside is that it doesn't support flash. But overall it's quite good (I mostly use the voice recognition feature to browse the net if I'm not in the mood to type.)
  • iPhone FTW! Although I have to mash the front button really hard every time after dropping it on the garage floor.
  • Iphone 3 best phone i've owned i just wish the battery would go more than 2 days without needing charging, hope they work on that one day.
  • I have iPhone 4 and I love it. Lots of useful apps for both my business and entertainment purposes. And basic functions like FaceTime are priceless.
  • I reluctantly got a LG smartphone with android after my old school phone died and I can't believe what I've been missing! I never liked touchscreens until this phone!
  • I have a Droid smartphone. I use it for texts and calls pretty much exclusively. I've used it's 'smart' features/functions once or twice all this year.

    Fiddling about with those little screens just doesn't do it for me.

    ... I honestly do not know what I would do without it anymore.

    I switched to it quite a few years back and have not regretted the 'smart phone' upgrade since.

  • The last thing I want is a smart phone......I like the fact that my phone does absolutely nothing.....I waste so much time online, I simply could not imagine how much time I would waste playing angry birds or some other crap!

    • That's like saying that you won't use the Internet because there are games online.

      A smartphone actually allows you to be separated from your computer, so you can do other things. Angry Birds is optional

    I have a droid Thunderbolt and before that a droid eris, both by HTC and both GREAT tools.

    You use one of the special recording apps to record audio for your products, The sound quality when played back on your PC is better than most audio I hear in products I buy. You can make videos (for product creation) and I know I haven't scratched the suffice yet on "ideas."

    The Thunderbolt voice to text is almost as good as Dragon. I've written an entire ebook with my Thunderbolt.

    With a 8mp camera the pictures are quite good for product creation also.

    I could go on and on, it's that good.

    I think the first person who builds a proper WF iPhone app has the ability to clean up big time.

    • Allen said over a year or so ago he wished someone would build a WF app. Actually there is a Vb forum app for the droid and I assume for the iPhone also. It's in the droid app store and it's free.

    • No! Build an Android App! That would keep me busier than Angry Birds any day of the week, even into the night time.

      I have a Motorola Defy. If I had done a bit more research I would have gone for a HTC phone, perhaps the Desire or Sense?

      It's not working on a Contract at the moment but it has wifi which is a God send. If the kids are on the PCs I can catch up with the internet or even TV if I wanted to. Oh you have to use Skyfire Browser for Flash content, which doesn't always work.

      I mainly use mine for email and checking the Warriorforum when I'm out, at the library or McDonalds . I also can check my Adsense to see how much I'm not making LOL.

      If I had a wish for my phone is that it would be more like a proper PC in my pocket. Not a tablet, although I wouldn't say no to one, but something that could give me the full internet experience that I thougth the Defy would, but hasn't.

    • I just picked up my first smart phone last Friday (Android), It's a blast! I wish I had done so sooner.
    • I had a prepaid phone for emergencies but I have it to my husband. I don't have an cell phone. While I would love a smartphone, it just isn't really worth it to me at this time. If anything I'll just get a 3G card for my laptop.

    • You are not the "only one", but you are certainly in the minority. 92% of Americans have a cell phone.

      I couldn't imagine not having one. Business aside, I want to know that my daughter's school can reach me in case of emergency. I want to be able to call for help if I see or are in an accident. I want to be able to be reached when I am needed or wanted.

      I did have a prepaid phone for emergency use, but as it happens, the minutes on those things (or at least the Verizon ones) go away if you don't use them, which sort of defeats the purpose for me.

      I spend the vast, vast majority of my time in places where cell phones don't work, so it'd largely be a waste of money. Truth be told, I'm not a big fan of talking to people on the phone to begin with.
  • I really love the iphone. everytime i pick it up, i start playing all the different games and playing all the different applications. I just can't stop. The next thing i know, i always get the same complaint from my friend who lent me the phone.

    1. Why are you playing so long?
    2. My battery life is running short.

    The second complaint was something that all iphone users complained of, I'm not sure about the other smart phones, the low battery life turns me off.

    I then went to ask myself, what is a phone for? i thought that it was great where they have many features to do great things like browsing the web and doing work and so on. Then i realised that no matter what phone i used, i could not do my work as i needed functional capabilites of that of a computer and laptop. The phone simply cant run all my browsers and emails together.

    I then resorted to carrying my really heavy laptop wherever i go, and a really simple $50 cell phone.

    Here is what my $50 cell phone can do

    1. Drop on the floor and return to me in good condition
    2. My mood remains calm even after the phone dropped, since its worthless anyway
    3. The battery life is amazing, up to 5 years. Its a Nokia model.
    4. Last me 2 years before replacement

    Different people have different needs and use different phones. What are your needs? Mobility? Work? Communication?

  • Yes, you are right, my life changed too, when i've got my Samsung Galaxy, And after 3 months i decided to change my life Back, Its very Simply to see WHY i decided : Now i spend under 40$ per month, with Smartphone- about 130$ (PS: I HATE to TEXT, and to Use WEB on those small phones...) I paid in full my Agreement with Provider, Cancel the Lane, took the Number, and Run Away from them. And im Very HAPPY I love to know that my $$$ are in my pocket, not in others....
    I was ready to cancel my Contract after 2 hours after i've got my new Smartphone delivered to my home, but my wife insisted to keep it, She told me that all my friends are High, and only i'm cheap How crazy i was, cause i spent about 600$ in 3 months 200$ Cancelation Fee+ 3 months Service...
    Right Now im VERY CHEAP, BUT V E R Y H A P P Y, and ill be 100% happy when my wife will follow me

      Regular 'cell' (mobile).

      I don't take it with me when I go out. I don't ever make calls on it. I just use it for texts and to receive one-tones.

      Whenever I'm working I'm on the computer, whenever I'm home I'm usually working or using skype.

      Therefore when I'm out and about I like to be totally free, offline, undisturbed, laid-back etc.

      I literally cannot get my head around the way most other people live - always connected, always being disturbed and usually talking utter nonsense on their phones.

      Each to their own.

  • I have a genius phone. [iPhone 4]

    Rarely use it to its full potential though. Most of the time, its discharged.

    In the last 5 days, I've made/got maybe 2-3 calls. I'm not someone who keeps in touch with his phone often.

      This subject truly fascinates me, although it concerns me a little (RE my son).

      My son (15 yrs old) is the opposite of me - he usually has about three gadgets in his posession at any one time.

      Me (I'm 42) - I was a child when they invented digital watches and calculators. As I was born and grew up, so were/did personal computers and they were a part of my life to a degree.

      I've grown up during a technological/communications revolution.

      I have friends of the same age who are totally the opposite of me. I look on in amazement as they hoard their gadgets, often spending all of their spare cash or getting into debt to keep 'up to date.'

      One friend has a massive DVD collection. Each time there is an update in the technology (Blueray, 3D) he re-purchases virtually his whole collection of DVDs.

      Then he complains because he is bored, skint and his life is totally unfulfilling.

      Another friend joyfully showed me his new iPad, intent on convincing me that it was going to revolutionise his world and everyone elses. I pressed him to explain, in a logical/empirical manner, how it was going to do this. He kept trying, but nothing of any consequence seemed to come along. I think in the end, all he could come up with was that he could use his finger to move things around, rather than a mouse.

      I use a trackball anyway, so the point was kind of moot. This is also the same friend who tipped me off that LED TVs were going to change the world and that I should build a site on them. Of course, I'd never heard of them, not least because I shun TV. On that occasion, I did build it, as it was a small investment. They were a total flop. I haven't forgotten the lesson.

      I explained to him that part of my job is to -

      * totally ignore many of the latest, greatest shiny new things in my industry. I explained that it took some time to learn this, but I'm not about to be knocked off course

      * understand the nature of marketing, cults, trends, brands etc.

      It may sound like I am dismissive of the views of 'those on the other side.' I'm trying not to come across in that way, unless there is empirical evidence to suggest that their preferences are unhealthy, likely to dumb them down or simply the result of brainwashing by effective marketers/cult builders.

      But as I read the words of those in the 'I love it' camp, I have to admit I tend to see a lot of people swept away by the marketing and not much in the way of good, solid, logical reasons to change my point of view.

      All those of you who love this type of technology, do many of you think in terms of these issues -

      * the brain is your most valuable tool that is with you wherever you go and is the key to all of your successes in life - it is delicate and you need to protect it from 'garbage in' syndrome or any unnecessary inputs

      * time is your most valuable asset and also needs protecting - especially from disturbances (particularly from other people) that seem to spirit time away, that take control of time away from you

      * making the shift from consumer to marketer involves always recognising marketing when it is acting as a force upon you and therefore it is important to use filters to make sure that the only time it is allowed to influence you is when the product it is selling is proven to be beneficial. Likewise, when a huge trend is sweeping across nations, that is the time to be most skeptical, cynical and cautious

  • I use a prepaid Tracfone. I rarely need to use it so it only costs a few dollars a month. I can't even remember the last time I added minutes. I've thought about upgrading to something from this century but I just can't see spending that kind of money when I'm used to paying something like $10 a month.

  • I first got my phone-shaped ball and chain in 1987. Although it had to stay in the car.

    Then they made the ball and chain lighter and more portable. Amazing marketing, that!

    I lived through the 90s with it wherever I was.

    Is my current phone a smartphone? Nah, it's as thick as pigs***. A Sony Ericsoon W850i I think.

    I use it as an alarm clock mostly. I take it on long car journeys and hikes but apart from that it lives on the bedside table.

    When I am on the beach...I am on the beach. Not on the phone. FREE!!

    • Hardcore iPhone fan, but that's me. In fact, I'm still using the *first* iPhone. Yes, you heard me right: I've had the thing for four years, and it's still as good as ever!

      Even the battery still is holding up better than any other, and the only reason I'll get an iPhone 5 when it comes out is because it is compatible with the newest software updates so that I can then get more apps that require such.

  • I have a pseudo smartphone, the Nokia Nuron 5230. It's touchscreen but works on Nokia's own platform-Ovi. It does everything I want including games. I have to have a cell phone because I drive a lot with 2 young kids and have a husband that's always working events i.e never home! It was $50 for the phone and I get 1500 minutes, unlimited data and text for 85 bucks. I won't get a Droid, Blackberry or iPhone on the simple premise that I don't want to get charged up the butt in fees and rates from the big wig phone providers. My friend pays over $150 per month for her regular old cell phone with Verizon. I say ridiculous!
  • Android HTC and Iphone but prefer the android these days simply because it gets a better signal in more places where my iphone seems to drop out a lot.

    Use them mainly for testing and selling my mobile websites for comparability and some calls and games and audios for when I am travelling.

  • I own an HTC Android device.
    I rarely use it for internet surfing or gaming but one of the biggest advantages of this for me is that I don't have to open my laptop every morning to check how much sales I have made.
  • Got a Droid X in Oct 2010 and can't imagine life without it. The extra $30 a month is the best investment I've ever made. Not only does it serve me in my day job, I also tether it to my home pc using PdaNet and that allows me to use my 3g internet through my phone for no extra cost, instead of dial-up.

    It's also handy to purchase new WSO's while I'm at work.

  • I have always used Nokia Phones, now i am using nokia e90 which is my favorite phone. It is best for internet uses i have used for this purposes and really satisfied from it.

  • When I bought my phone, I was told they weren't calling this league of phone smart phones anymore.. Lol at sales pitchers..

    Honestly though? It is a super phone. It deserves a cape or something. I'm using the Samsung Galaxy S 2. It's got a dual core processor, 8MP Camera, all the office type apps and I can even browse the WF War room and download the free reports etc straight to my phone.

    I literally run my business using my smartphone. I only use the laptop when I really need to do a ton of writing.

    • LOL That is how I felt when I got my first smartphone. It has saved me enormous amounts of time. I never have to be tied t my office anymore. I can email, surf the web, and even edit documents on my iPhone. It has given me more time with my family and for hobbies. Instead of leaving the fishing pier to send out or get an email, I just do it from there.

      I sound like an Apple salesperson, but it really has improved my life.
  • I love my iPhone. It's definitely been a huge asset to my enterprise. It's easier for me to stay in touch with my sales staff and my writers with it as half of them are across the ocean from me.

    I use the DNS app to dictate ideas, articles, and other content. Then I e-mail it to my assistant Lisa (or myself, depending on what's going on).

    I check my e-mails on it.

    I use it as an iPod to listen to educational material and my music.

    I check my stock investments on it.

    I use the Skype app to keep in touch with my sales team. I also use the Yahoo IM app as well.

    I use the calendar extensively for appointments and reminders.

    It's my alarm clock.

    Though I recently downloaded a game called ARMY OF DARKNESS and it's definitely been a huge distraction.....lol.

    And probably a few dozen other items I forgot to list.....

  • I couldn't imagine living without my smartphones. Torch for "work" iPhone 4 for "personal". And getting through a day without my phones is nearly impossible... Really need to try to "unplug".
