How many hours do you spend at your internet business?

Is the internet business the main income you have? How many hours do you spend every day working your business?
I used to spend 12 hours a day or more working my business, but after several months of improvement, I have found out that it is better if I spend 3 hours every day on working the plan.
Is it the same for you? What is your day plan (share as much as you can, I don't want you to say exactly what you are doing)?

About 2-4 hours these days because I have to split time with locating offline clients (but it is worth it!).

On average 16 hours a day and about twice a week I'll put in a straight 40 hour 'shift' without stopping and no sleep.

Been doing this for years now. I just love my work, can't stop. It's like an addiction. I'm a workaholic. And I love it!

Not as much as you but as much time as i possibly can, i have to actively try to not talk about business all the time.

A figure in hours probably close to 12 and it's not hard at all.

        Hehe, sounds familiar

I usually sleep 4-5 hours and other time I just can't stop But of course there are other activities so it is about 17-18 hours daily.

Three to four hours a day. I am still in the 9 to 5 mode but on the weekends I can pull 10+ hours on those days. You can never promote your product enough. It never ends and what you put into it is what you get out of it.

I would say I put in between 16 - 20 hours a week. The key is to put together a mindmap (flowchart) of what you need to complete. I sometimes get myself into information overload trying to learn new techniques. I think most of us spend 60% of our time reading and learning, 30% distracted on forums or the next shiny object and 10% actually putting what we learned in place.

rsachetti has pretty much summed up what I think happens to most IMers until their focus gets sharper on a set of goals. Living 'The Good Life' expands exponentially in direct proportion to the number of 'options' one has at his/her elbow, and the number of 'options' one has expands in direct proportion to the amount of disposable income one has! Unfortunately, too many confuse 'activity' with success. Regardless of how much time you spend at your business, only 20% of that time spent will yield 80% of your success. How many new 'options' did your 'activity afford you today?

I would love to finally be at the point where I can do it full time, but, until I bank enough to quite my day job, I manage to get 2 - 3 hours in each day. Most of my work has to be at night after my wife is tucked in and I have time to decompress from my day job for a bit.

This is actually a good topic...

A majority of online marketers often spend TONS of time online finding themselves repeating the SAME thing they have already done that day..

I personally only spend 3-4 hours a day and continually generate leads and BOATLOADS of traffic!

Because... I manage my time wisely!

I like to do 8 hours. I find I get more done in the end if I don't push for the extra hours.

But I often spend my leisure time doing things that tie in. Such as studying related topics or doing something that improves my confidence or affects it more indirectly.

A couple of hours a day actual labour I'd say, but I've been pretty lax with my time as of late, I'm in no particular rush.

An interesting flip question would be how much time do you spend READING about what you should be doing with your online business, instead of getting it done. I need to ban myself from forums...

Yeah, you're right. But if you are reading about what you should be doing long enough, and you put some effort in. It could turn out to be a blast for you.

I'm another one who can get caught in the "read up on this new and interesting thing" trap. My sites are just starting to get traffic (the Friendsinbusinessblog has the potential for a lot of traffic. The other sites (a webcomic, scientific research (yes, really. I'm a retired scientist. I'm doing some citizen science projects.)) are not going to attract a bazillion readers but they're starting to get steady traffic.

My plan is to spend around 1 hour/night doing things to boost traffic. Writing, research, and drawing takes up the rest of the time.

I usually spend around 4-5 hours in a day, but there are times that I only spend around 2-3 hours in a day. Most of the time I spent online is more on reading some tips and threads because I want to learn more about the IM world, since I still can't rate myself as "professional" yet. I still have my daytime job and mostly after my job, I made sure to spend time online. I know time will come that I will be quitting my daytime job to focus more in this internet business. If I have a plan, I usually spend between 1 and 2 hours.

Without a plan, it's more like 6-7 and the "quality" of my work is substantially lower and I end up having to rewrite most of the stuff the next day. Get distracted on forums, reading too much when I should be working, looking into stuff that's not even relevant for my business at current times.

Lesson is, if you don't plan your business, you plan to fail.

Personally, I would say I spend most of my time doing research towards my business as opposed to time spent actually doing business. I don't really spend much time actually doing business as i have built it up in a systematic way allowing me to just have to check certain aspects such as affiliates, accounts and outsourcing. The vast majority of the time I am looking for innovative techniques which will enable me to Upgrade my System.

For myself, I spend about an hour everyday writing at least one blog post for my site, and sometimes writing another article for a directory or creating a video for Youtube.

Then another 1-2 hours on SEO and social networking.

The rest of the day might be for my clients work online, but I limit my own internet marketing time, because I could just spend all day going in and out of forums having fun and playing around and not getting a good return on my time.

when starting out I would spend as long as it took to make money online ... then over time as i started to build an asset ( my mailing list ) I would spend around an hour or two a day doing email updates and promos for my readers,

then I open my coaching program and worked one day a week (thursday's) just to coach others what I was doing.

and for the past few years haven't really spent much time online, as we automated most of the stuff.

but yesterday we moved into a new outside office and we've been here from 9am to 9pm cranking out 12 hour shifts to expand the scope.

I guess what it comes down to is this ...

      > what is the outcome you are looking for?

      > how much do you want to work for this outcome?

      > do you know what you should be doing in your time set focused on the outcome ?

once you know this - you can work less and make more

(not time spent just at the screen)

    2-4+ hours per day ...

If there's a big project going on then of course I can work all day ...

However I'm big on the thing of 'your business working for you' ...

So I get my 8-10 hours of sleep, 3-6 hours of playing guitar, meeting up with friends, good meals, physical activity, enjoying the weather/city, reading, writing etc

I strive to live a balanced life and 12 hours a day working on my business will not cut it for me ...

2-4 hours is more then sufficient to create huge windfalls of cash if you're investing it in the right places though

Not saying I couldn't do more ... but I'm lazy.

    Cheers,
    -Konstantin.

I used to spend 12 hours a day or more working my business, but after several months of improvement, I have found out that it is better if I spend 3 hours every day on working the plan.
Is it the same for you? What is your day plan (share as much as you can, I don't want you to say exactly what you are doing)?

    Adam
    Hi Adam,

I have invested about 2 to 4 hours a day in order to build my online business. The real thing here is to be more productive in the few hours you have invested so that you will benefit in the long term.

If you have invested long hours in it, and you did not get any good returns from there. Then I think you would have to come out with an effective plan/strategy so as to determine which plan/strategy works for you and you will be able to improve from there.

    Hope it helps...

    Raymond

used to be 10-12 but no more like 4-5 because the thing with online busienss is that it takes time unless you have a technique that brings in the cash immediatly. So its preferable you got a job and work on it after work and weekends.

This is so right I watch a movie on my computer and when the movie is finished I just have a look at my business. But usually it is not a look, it is half an hour. And this is the problem, the time you spend at your business is so hard to count

That make sence, but it means that you are not a full time IMer, so of course you can spend just as many hours as you have after the main work for your employer.

What I love about this business is that all of us can take it the way they wont. You want to work 12 hours - just do it, you want to make a little extra money in your free time - go ahead and do it.

Thanks to all of you for your posts and your info you shared.

Sidetracking is the worst stuff in this business, you need to concentrate only one way, and to be honest, I have never found a good way how to do it. At least I don't use facebook so much, I know people that have big problems concetrating because of FB. If you will find a good way how to concentrated fo one thing, let me know

To sum up a little, lot of us do still spand to much time working their business, but I guess I can say this for most of us, that we actually like doing it, and the best about it is that we are able to choose, whether we will spend all day working or not. Anyways this business is not about the time you put in, this business is about working smart, we need to step out of box to come up with a product/software/tool that is different, that is better and that will HELP to others!

Right now I'm spending literally 2 hours a week.

I have a multitude of website pulling in revenue on there own, very little needs to be done on my part the way I've got things set up at the moment, so I'm just enjoying life with the family right now and looking after my youngest most of the time.

If I were to step it up and move onto my next venture / plan then I'm guessing I will be needing to put in 5-6 hours per day - but right now £600 per week is satisfying.

Most of the normal 4 hours days are spent with Customer relations and learning new things. Also making notes for upcoming products.

I used to spend 12 hours a day or more working my business, but after several months of improvement, I have found out that it is better if I spend 3 hours every day on working the plan.
Is it the same for you? What is your day plan (share as much as you can, I don't want you to say exactly what you are doing)?

    Adam
I agree on creating a working plan. It could be more beneficial for your business if you spend quality hours of work as opposed to hours and hours of work without daily goals. Before starting work, I usually spend a few minutes checking mails and doing other personal things online because when I start working, I really don't want any more distractions. Without discipline with what you do, you can spend too many hours without any real outcome.

Anything from 2 to 6 hours a day - depending on what it is I'm doing that week. I've found, just like many others, that having a plan and a set time works great. I still have a fulltime job and a family, so can't really put in more time than what I'm doing now.

According to me the key is to make a mind map of what you need to complete. Sometimes I get into information overload trying to learn new techniques. I think most of us spend 60% of our time reading and learning, 30% distracted in the forums or the shiny object that comes to 10% really put what they learned in their place.

Giveaway events were my break through online. I host events to build my list and generate an income. Just recently I released a product with John Thornhill called The Giveaway Masterclass and had my very first $1000 day which went on to be my first ever $3000 week. Couldn't of done it without a mentor though.

On product creation, the whole day is spent on thinking on new ideas and jotting them down, right after that I write down the ideas then I add my ideas to my product which requires maybe less than an hour or more depending on the content length. Repeat and repeat until I completed. Once done, I am probably going to just launch it.

It's definitely FAR more efficient if you have a plan. But.. I think many people are put off by the fact of actually writing a plan because it acknowledges that they actually have to do work. At least, if there is no plan then whatever a person does during the day is not quantifiable and they can get away with just (lying to themselves) saying, "I worked today".

I spend about five hours a day.

It's kind of addicting though, so in order for it not to consume my whole life I like to just set aside a specific amount of time, so that I can spend the rest of my day exercising, traveling, reading, learning new things, etc.

    That is an interesting question
I am new to internet marketing, but I have worked as a freelancer for several years and that is my bread and butter right now. I usually spend my mornings working on my freelance work and then in the afternoon and evening I work on my JVs and my own products. I work a crazy amount of hours, but I am new and trying to catch up on the learning curve. I am really hoping that within a few months I can stop freelancing and go into IM full-time and only spend a few hours a day working on my stuff.

I'm a total enthusiast when it comes to working less hours, but working more effectively during those hours.

Many online marketers work so hard for making money that they entirely destroy their wealth.

It's better to work 4 hours a day focused, energized, and by being present than it is to invest 12 interrupted hour into your business.

A lot of people who start off work too many hours and are not productive. The more skilled you are in managing yourself, the less hours you will need to get things done that have the biggest impact on your results.

Exactly, I used to start off working at least 10 hours per day online.. Now I know the tricks - Working long hours won't help, in fact I will get burn out and frustrated much faster..

I won't work more than 4 hours per day now (just like what mack micheal said)

Applying the 80%-20% rule does help,

I spend about 3 hours a day and do internet marketing as my only job. But after I bought my first iPad a month ago, I find myself spending more time on it.

It depends. I've spent 10 hours a day and I've spent 4 hours a day. I prefer to do stuff in advance and keep a 6 hours a day general rate just to be sure.

2-3 hours clearing backlogs for orders, 1 hour to communicate with clients and address their issues, 6-7 hours marketing my products/services, 3-4 hours working on current orders. On "less work" days, I spend a considerable amount of time doing what IBM calls "ideating"

Mine is a bit different since I sell physical products and a full time working for myself. I officially work from 9 am to 7 pm daily, though am usually working from 7 am thru 9-10 pm.

I spend about 1-3 hours a day on seo/marketing, 1-3 hours a day on processing orders and bookkeeping, 2-3 hours a day on shipping orders, and the rest of the day might be adding new products, answering emails, researching new vendors, participating in forums, etc., or working on design or function of my stores. I also spend about an hour a day on my other, non-store sites and 1-2 hours a day on general, non-work related things like cleaning, cooking, playing with the dogs, etc. Being home based is great since I can really vary my days and work any time I feel like it or an idea strikes me.

Not nearly enough! I work a demanding day job that includes work "as needed" evenings and weekends. I also have a wife and young kids. So my IM work comes in short bursts as I can do it.

I recently bought a laptop to use for IM, so my commute to/from work (on the train) just got more productive. I do notice that the more I do, the more results I get. So that's good at least.

I suspect I'll need to start outsourcing some things given my limited time.

Well i'm sure this has been said before in this thread (haven't read completely), but the more you work the more you'll gain.

Sure it sounds nice to work only a couple of hours a day and count your money afterwards but that's not how it works unfortunately.

I spend about 12-14 hours / day online working and there's still not enough time in the day.

The good thing about it though is that i really enjoy it, so here's the difference between a regular 9-5 job:
-> Regular job thoughts: Oh no it's only 11am
-> Online job thoughts: Oh no it's already 11pm

Time flies if you enjoy what you're doing.

Not really an online business just yet, but I do spend quite a bit of time trying to build something up. Well, for my it is quite a bit of time, obviously my projects are not even part-time work. I'm still in the stage where I do it for pure enjoyment and don't make much money, but I like to think that I spend about 60-80hours a week. I always try to do a bit more, but I get sidetracked with my offline life far to much .

I spend about 1 to 2 hours a day for the business itself (sending emails, driving traffic etc.) but since I have a passion for this I spend a lot of time coaching people too.. So with the coaching included 10 to 12 hours a day.

I typically work a few hours a day for about a week setting up a project, and then it runs on auto pilot building a list for me. Aside from that, I just spend an hour or so here and there to maintain my lists.

minimum 12 hrs, max 16 hrs/day, 7days a week, online fulltime 15+ years, successfully top in my niche. i start 5am and am often doing webinars til 7:30-8pm, in addition to video production/site design work. i do try to get it down to 1 hour max work on Dec. 25th and my b-day. i do take 3-4 days off each year, max; I run over 70+ sites fulltime singlehandedly no help.. and loving it.

i am astonished at anyone who thinks they can make a decent income, adding genuine value, working less than 7-8 hours/day. i made it because I work very hard at it. are you a dabbler, or a genuine 'do-er'?
