Google Analytics or Hostgator stats - who to believe?

I am a little confused!!! My Hostgator statistics are showing totally different figures than google analytics. I expect some discrepancy, but this is ridiculous. For instance, so far today google analytics says I have had 2 visitors and 2 page views....Hostgator says 23 visitors and 92 page views. How can this be? And which one is actually correct?

both correct but Google analytics has a 4-24hr delay.

The stats in Hostgator probably counts search engine spiders and other bots, while Analytics is showing only human visitors.

I have found that the hostgator statistics do count a LOT of bots and spiders and whatnot, as far as I know Google Analytics gives a more complete and accurate breakdown.

I love stats so I monitor hostgator for a 'live feed' and check analytics later for a proper analysis. Of course, this can be a huge time-sucker.. I'm totally hooked on stats.

I love stats too, waste hours that should be used to much better effect! I do know that Google Analytics apprently doesn't count people that don't have java enabled (at least, it was something like that I read!). But according to hostgator I have visitors from places like you tube and twiiter that just don't show up on google at all. My hostgator stats seem to separate the bots from the humans, so I'm pretty sure they're human.
It will be easier to track from tomorrow, beginning of new month, as hostgator lump everyone together in a whole month and only give a single figure for daily visitors and not a complete breakdown. I'll let you know what it says as tomorrow goes by.

Both are correct. But one may exclude some results some not. but if you are a serious marketer you are better to rely with Google Analytics

I think I have this more or less sorted now, thanks people. Hostgator does include some people who don't show up on google analytics, and also shows the websites people came from when sometimes google just puts them as 'direct traffic'. For instance Hostgator counts all the times I visit the admin panel along with all the pages I went to, google doesn't count this at all (quite rightly, I think).
Thanks again for all the useful comments.

Do you have wordpress and google analytics? If so, the analytics plug in will do that for you automatically, mine does.
If you don't have a wordpress site then try the google help pages (I usually link to them from my webmaster account)...There is info there on the scripts you need to add to your pages, and how to do it.
