I understand that but I think my real question is on the line of how much hosting will I need, how do i get traffic as in real traffic from people, graphic web designers and such.

This question doesn't really make sense "at least to me"...

You need to promote your site.

And as far as hosting you would want a dedicated server if you really had that much traffic.

In order to make a site at that level, you'll need to most likely answer an unrecognized demand by society as a whole that has not been effectively supplied by anyone. Once you have that, you'll need to hire the right set of people to make it happen which will be costly.
If that is truly your vision and you want to work toward it, I would recommend researching how those giants began and the story on their progression to where they are now to learn more so than looking for a general teaching course. The point is, no one can teach you how to make a site like that because they all inherently have innovation built in to them.

if you are serious about this you don't want a cheap programmer because you will have bugs in your code and will need to maintain a site.

Facebook for example now has MILLIONS of lines of code and I'm pretty sure one human being in a whole life time couldn't code it all to where it is today.

you will want to learn:

HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a server-side language like PHP/Python/PERL/RUBY then a database language like Mysql,

this is not to mention all the UI/desing work you'll need and if you want to make an IPHONE app you'll need to learn objective-c

You can't just wake up on a Monday and say "you know what I'm going to make the next Facebook or twitter" if you aren't equip with the appropriate skills or deep pockets, sorry man.

You can get free open source scripts and paid ones that can be edited but if you REALLY want to do it you are going to want to do it right.

Thats what im doing actually. Facebook started out small and as it grew and got more popular it was able to use more workers. I am trying to start out small and go big. I wanted an actual website, I know it will take work. Months, probably years but I am dedicated to starting such a site

I can see that this is what you are doing but the difference is mark zuckerberg was a programming prodigy that knew how to build a website.

like I said before you need the skills or the cash.

Go to W3Schools Online Web Tutorials this will give you a good primer on the web technologies.

Deep pockets aren't really necessary. Craigslist, Facebook, and Plenty of Fish were all started in someone's room or basement. Even Huffington Post was started on a shoestring budget.

You need the great idea and some way to implement it. You aren't going to build Facebook or Twitter. They evolved into what they are today, but started with someone who could program and a great idea.

True. You're going to have to bring some skills to the table or a partner with some skills. Good ideas don't usually fly all by themselves.

I have been building online businesses since 2009 and it is not something that you can just watch a video series, then create gold! Even if you build the greatest website, if you don't know how to market it or get traffic, then it will not be successful... There is also a lot of luck, some sites just get "viral" and people gravitate toward it even though there may be lots of other similar sites.....

Being here is a good start toward informing yourself ...

My honest suggestion is to build something that you want to use and that you love... Don't just try to build a site because you want to work online from the beach...
If you don't know what kind of site you want, how can you convince others that it is great...You haven't even "sold" yourself on a great idea yet.... Start There!

I just think that you are asking for advice for step 20 in the process, you have not even started step 1..... Most great websites like the one you are referring to did not just start up to be "known nationally".....they saw a void that needed filled, or they created something that ended up filling a niche and the rest of the world caught onto it and took it to the next level...

Do you just want to be a website owner, or do you have a great idea that the world needs? Step one is knowing what you want, then building it, then trying to convince others that they also need and want it...

If you don't have an idea of what the site is actually going to do, it's impossible to say what you need to know. For pretty much anything more than a basic website, some PHP will be required, and then other languages the more complex it is.

I understand what ALL of you are saying. I know that I must create an idea an etc. I am already brainstorming ideas of services/sites that will provide people with something they need. I was just askin what I need later. I like to think in the future and plan ahead so I will be more prepared

You are entering a very tough market if you want to be like those sites. If your talking about being like those sites in an untapped niche that's where the gold could be waiting.

If you type in social network software into Google that will help get you started. Myself along with some business partners are working on a social network for a niche right now, I have high expectations for it, but money is not a guarantee.

This is what I suggest doing ...
If you have an idea and know how to market it but have 0 knowledge on how to make your idea a reality then find someone who is good at programming and offer him Joint Venture where he'd code it and you market it.
Now, before you jump into "Oh I got this great idea, I'm just gonna do it" create plan.
Your biggest question should be "Why people will go to my site?"
Your second question will be "Where can I get those people?"
If your think you just going to create something like facebook on cloned script and traffic will start pouring into your site over night, you setting up yourself for a failure.
If you don't know the answer to those questions then don't bother.
You can have a sh*tty website, but if it solves a problem and you market it right it can be a next big thing, just look at craigslist. Sh*tty design, nothing special, but look how much traffic it gets.

Check your competition, come up with marketing plan then start implementing it. Also, don't say "I'm ready to work on it for 2 years till I go live"... Internet changes everyday. What might be new today, tomorrow can be old news.

To answer the OP's question regarding books and videos. O'Reilly has a title called "Creating Dynamic Websites" by Robin Nixon. The "cap stone" project in the book teaches you how to put together a Twitter/Facebook clone. Its a very simple project that one programmer can handle. You might want to look through the book at a bookstore before dropping the cash just to make sure that it is something you need.

Just a few ideas to throw out there.

Do you have a business plan?

Because what you are actually asking is not how to build a website, it's how to build a business. Facebook has a revenue model that has allowed Mark Zuckerberg to become a billionaire.

The website part is actually the simple part. That's just technology, spend a few thousand dollars and get a qualified developer to do the work and that parts done.

But conceiving how the website will work and how it will become the next big social media darling is a whole different story. There are literally hundreds of social media websites out there, but your average person is only aware of half a dozen of them. Even a good marketing strategy won't assure you of success, although of course it will help put the odds in your favor.

Build something that people want and get some publicity, and design the code to be able to handle unlimited growth. No one can give you the formula for doing this, but a business plan with a SWAT analysis will probably help you a lot. After all, if you really are gong to do this you'll be spending the next couple of years of your life dedicated to nothing else - it would be a shame if all that effort was not focused properly.

That's not easy to say, you indicate that you are at a beginners level with the coding skills but there are a number of other variables.

- How quick a learner are you?
- What is your aptitude for gaining technical skills?
- Can you be self-taught, or do you need a teacher or mentor?

I suggest you follow the link you were given to the W3 Schools and go through all the courses on HTML, PHP, JavaScript and MySQL. And then learn about Apache servers and LINUX. And code a few AJAX applications.

I'm guessing 6 months to two years, but its only a guess.

But again coding it is the EASY part! And you can hire people to do that - once you have all your other ducks in a row.

- You still need a business plan, with that all-important SWAT analysis. Don't even consider starting without it.

- You need a marketing plan. And a budget to carry it out.

- You need a PR strategy, and the skill to execute it.

- You need the revenue to allow you to focus 100% of your efforts on this one project. Not 3 hours a day - more like 14-16.

But the BIG problem I see is you are asking how to build it all YOURSELF. I can tell you from experience (and I have a few decades of it, as my grey hair and my e-mail account from 1989 will attest) that you are far better off getting partners in such a mammoth undertaking. People who have skills in all the aforementioned disciplines. People who are as devoted to this project as you are. Doing it all yourself would be overwhelming even if you already possessed all of the required skills. Having to master all those skills on top of everything else - well that seems very unlikely.
