I have decided to try writing as my primary source of income! However, I don't have a portfolio. Can anyone give me an idea on where to start?

You mean where to start building a portfolio?

    You can
    1) Learn an evergreen niche (weight loss, wealth building, relationships, etc.)
    2) Write some articles about it
    3) You have your portfolio :-p

Also if you start in the Warriors for Hire section you don't necessarily need a portfolio, but you might want to offer a few review copies so people can admire your work and you get some testimonials.

If you're working with offline businesses, you can try learning about their industry, writing articles for it and using that as your portfolio.

How do you know if you are a good enough writer to do it for a living, if you don't have anything (a portfolio) to show potential customers?

I would think that you would have written lots before you decided to make a business out of it????????

Correct, I have written half a book before having to quit because of time constraints. However, I don't believe this is something that should be used for this style of business. Storytelling and writing business articles seem very different from each other.

Their outputs are very different from one another. I'm not sure the skills and attitudes required to become successful at either are necessarily all that different, though: perhaps one or two are, but it seems to me that many of them are actually shared.

It would be WELL worth your time to offer a few free articles to a few respected IM'ers, and ask them for an honest review. This type of social proof will attract paying customers.

You haven't specified if you are going to be marketing your service to offlline businesses or online like in the Warriors for hire section here on WF for example.

Assuming you meant the latter, I don't think you need to have a portfolio per se. Just a few samples of your work, and maybe offer a couple of review copies to get some feedback on your work.

I haven't personally offered writing services here on WF, but it's my impression that many warriors are willing to give new writers a chance.

Yeah, I was thinking on just writing for people for free, or partner with another writer and offer all my abilities for free.

If I were in your shoes I would probably pm some respected warriors, introduce yourself and explain what you do, if you have learnt from any of the warriors you've contacted then you should express some gratitude to them.

Offer to write a couple of free articles for them on any subject they like, and explain that in return you'd like an honest testimonial. This way you earn respect for future purchases from these warriors and other warriors will order your articles if they see the testimonials you collect.

As for your portfolio I would pick five evergreen popular niches (weight loss, make money etc..) and write some quality articles on these subjects. Take your time on these articles to ensure they turn out excellent, as potential customers will read them and they will pick fault if there are any grammatical or spelling errors.

If you have open office convert your articles into a pdf or use a free online service and post them onto a Warriors for Hire thread just below your sales copy.

This is solid advice. Take two weeks and write a bunch of great articles for different warriors for free- and then you have a portfolio. Then pay for a post in the 'warriors for hire' section, and you're on your way.

Offer your services to IM forums , odesk, freelancer and you need to have a portfolio or what you can do is have ppl pay after they have approved the article (only for your first couple of orders) to prove yourself.

lol ... write something. Maybe a PLR pack on a hot niche that you might actually be able to sell and use as a writing sample.

    @Wryker

The best way to get a portfolio is just start writing. Create your own website.

You could write a few guest posts for people on their blogs. You can then link back to your own blogs.

Why don't you just build your own website and write hundreds/thousands of keyword rich articles, SEOed to the max and then drive a tonne of traffic to some affiliate offers, build a list, create your own products etc.

By the way all of the above might sound complicated, but it is only as complicated as you want it to be.

    It is simple.

Let me know if you want some assistance getting started.

You can also spend some time around groups on Facebook. Start adding friends inside groups under - network marketing, mlm, internet marketing etc etc

There are always people in network marketing who are looking for writers.

Also try signing up to Odesk.com, Freelancer, elance etc etc etc

Alternatively, get a part time job whilst you build your own high traffic website.

    Regards,

    Chris
