The Legality Of Buying/Reselling Domains

I know there are a bunch of sites and people out there that jump on the chance to buy domain names as soon any interest is shown towards the topic or person.

For example caseyanthony.com or just about any major name that's been in the media lately has been snatched up.

I don't even know if this could be a profitable nitch, given the competition, but i was curious if anyone knew if there were legal consequences to buying popular names that appear in the news (as soon as they appear) and even if it could be profitable.

I know there is the cyber squatting act of 99, but I have no idea how strictly enforced it is, because based on what I've seen, these names get bought up all the time and sold at high prices.

Any opinions from my fellow warriors would be appreciated!

So cool you're from Lutz, Fl!!!

Best advice is to completely avoid any name that could possibly be trademarked! You most likely won't get in a lot of trouble but you will get an email threat of a lawsuit and a request to give up ownership. Also, if you have the domain set as private, the registrar will charge you a fee for the legal owner to access your contact info.

Overall, not worth the headache and the loss of money!!!

This discussion comes up almost every day here. Search "trademark" and you should find lots of detailed answers. There are many nuances to domains containing trademarks. In most cases, you're asking for trouble.
