Personal Websites in Marketing
These days, almost every serious player has a website for their business. We're all online, we're on Twitter, Linked In, Facebook and the like. The downside is: so are all of OUR competitors. We're all handing out the same business cards, with the same type of content on our websites, and many of us offer the same services. The question becomes: how do I stand out?
The answer: A personal website. When I meet someone at a function or coffee shop, I don't hand them a card that identifies me as a Transportation or Marketing guy. I hand them a business card that says only one thing: the URL of my website. No phone number, no description...just the website. From there, anyone with whom I've had a meaningful conversation is going to check me out. If not, then they wouldn't have called me anyway. Now, I have an entire website to make them understand what I do, who I am, where I've been, etc. Who can explain or sell themselves properly from a business card?? If everything about you can fit on 3.5" x 5", you may need to expand your offering !
The point: people like doing business with people that they know, that they understand and that they trust. By directing new friends and acquaintances to a personal website, you get to stand out, make someone feel comfortable with you, and then read about (and link to) your businesses.
Can't wait for some comments!
