Using other people's research in your DVD

Is it legal to do this as long as you give credit to them in the DVD?

I also intend to sell the DVD for profits of course.

Thanks!

You would have to give more detail for anyone to give you any kind of useful answer.

    Sure.

For the DVD, I want to have a section for "Fun Facts about Relationships."

I've found some interesting facts through articles and books and would like to some of their research materials to list in the "Fun Facts about Relationships" section.

I'm going to phrase it in my own words to avoid any copy-infringement or anything of the sort. I will also write the credits next to each "Fun Fact."

Is that enough to protect me?

If it's actually a fact, then you can use it. You can't copyright a fact, just the wording of the information. You should be fine with that.

I agree with everyone else you can take the info and reword it! Everything ever created is just a recreation of a creation!

Agreed with the above and this is the way I always view this kind of thing; If I was to tell you that the earth is for all intents and purposes, round, you would agree because we know it to be fact. But in the past it wasn't believed to be the case, going back many years, it was widely regarded that the world was in fact flat. It wan't until Ferdinand Magellan circumnavigated the globe in the 16 century that the round earth theory was proven.

This proof of fact can't be owned or copyrighted, but the associated written text (i.e. "How I discovered theworldwas round") can.

Just be careful though that what you are quoting as fact really is fact.

i would suggest letting the source of the information know what you intend doing with their video and information and get their consent first. once you have that (in writing of course) then you can do what ever you want with it.

How you do it is important.

How many news stories contain some version of this?

"According to Example, on the website example.com, some statement goes here. You can even read a couple of sentences as a direct quote."

      Or...

"Joe Blow, in the March issue of Example Magazine, was quoted as saying..."

In pretty much all instances, the quote or reference is supplemenatal to the actual story, and makes up a very small portion of the story. The quote or reference is also a small bit of the original.

Be fair, and you should be okay. It's just courtesy to let the source know that you are referencing them in your video. Drop the note to them - they'll appreciate it.

If, for whatever reason, they do object, remove the pertinent material and find a more amenable source.
