Best Free Press Release Sites Mid-2011

There are many recycled lists of free press release sites. You can tell they're recycled because they lists places that no longer accept press releases at all, or are no longer free.

I conducted an experiment in which I issued the most boring possible press release in order to see what would happen in the worst case: a competently-written, keyword-optimized press release that was guaranteed to get no viral coverage. This would be true for most local business PR, for example.

Submission to the following sites yielded over 3,000 appearances in Google. (I can provide the exact search for confirmation if you wish, but I don't want this post to look like self promotion.) No funny business, just careful use of all site features such as filling out the profile section completely, using all possible categories, and so on.

The last half dozen are document sharing sites, and I published in 2 or 3 formats when I could: PowerPoint, PDF, Word .doc, or OpenOffice/LibreOffice equivalents.

The results were roughly the same as the $360 submission option in PRWeb.com for what I thought was a press release that could go viral-that is, it was intrinsically interesting. (Or not-it didn't go viral!)

The main difference between the free sites and the PRWeb submission was that PRWeb got the press release into respected sites such as Business Insider, Newsday, UPI, About.com, and many others.

I spent roughly 2 days on the free sites portion of this experiment. Setting up all the profiles, learning the different options, and taking notes probably consumed half the time. I am also not sure this is the best possible list of free sites, though it's pretty darn good.

Doing all the options for PRWeb's $360 option, by the way, also took a full day.

    Great info.
I also did a test of a list of over 100 press release sites from one year ago, for an ebook.
The results - 20% were no longer accepting free press releases, and many others had changed their editorial guidelines, requiring that the press release contain "real news".
Here's the good news - Within three hours my press releases had received 33 hits, and one of them landed me on the # 1 spot in google for my keyword (semi-competitive).
The conclusion - Yes, they're a lot of work to set up the accounts, but once you have a system in place it doesn't take as much time. They can be very effective for generating publicity and backlinks for your site.

Free press release services are good and all, but if you're going to be making PRs of any quality, then you probably want to do a paid one. PRweb has a really good press release service for about $80. It's definitely worth it.

Nice, thanks for the list. I'm trying to write something that's a bit newsworthy right now.

    Great stuff!

I definitely like document sharing sites, and there are some nice PR sites but also some that just suck (the bad ones aren't on your list of course :-p )

Thanks for the list, I think I'll get one of my V.A.'s to fill in the blanks of the complete list after I do one or two myself (to give them the pertinent info). After profiles are done submitting updates on news worthy press releases should fall into a monthly maintenance program if done right.
    What do you think?

    Thanks again
