How long until I can access my new domain??

Yesterday I purchased a new domain and installed wordpress on it. I am eager to start working, but when I try to visit the site it sends me to a search results page. Is this normal? It has been a while since I purchased my first domain, but I don't remember having to wait like this.

Thanks.

    Give your registrar a call.

They will tell you it can take up to 72 hours. But usually it's way faster. Like 1 or 2 hours max.

In my experience: If it takes longer than 1 hour I grab the phone and call them and very often they tell me I have to wait up to 72 hours...

But somehow the domain is visible 15 minutes after I called...

I just registered a domain the other day it took approx 16 hours for me... so what i'm trying to say it probably differs from one host to another just be pateint and in that time while your waiting build a diagram of your website plot out your keywords, Plan ahead that way when you come to designing it you almost there.

(just stating that i'm not sure if you have already done this but it helps)

In most cases personally it is within 6 hours max. Although I have had a few domains in the past take a long time to propagate... up to 48 hours. I have no idea why either. Just a slow net day.

But don't hesitate to call your hosting company. There may be a legitimate problem your not aware of. And neither are they.

Back in the old days it could take 1 to 3 days for them to start working but you are right, now they should start working almost instantly.

Make sure that you've set your nameservers correctly at your domain company.

it can take up to 12 or so hours for your site to be activated ..

did you follow the proper steps to register your new domain?

    How TO REGISTER A DOMAIN

Go to register site which can be anyone of them such as namecheap etc

After processing the payment through your paypal/credit card ... You will be asked to choose the DNS servers to use with that domain.

    Use these 2: an example!

    1st Nameserver: ns2011.hostgator dot com
    2nd Nameserver: ns2011.hostgator dot com

so after you get that info from your register site

    go to your hosting account

    Select "Addon Domain"

Then just fill in the domain details from the domain you registered.

    ****

it should get activated within 12 or so hours - sometimes less!

    hope this helps : - )

Where did you register it? When I buy from Namecheap they resolve in few minutes.

If you purchased your domain and set your nameservers properly, you should be able to access your site relatively quickly depending on the terms of service provided by your registrar and your hosting company. If you cannot access your site within 48 - 36 hours, I'd submit a service ticket or give them a call.

    Good luck!

I'll often see my domain instantly as long as I don't mess it up and have to go back and change anything - in that case, it often does take nearly two days..

You can also try clearing out your DNS cache.
