Please criticize my high-end product! Will I make sales?

Hi fellow warriors,

I started to engineer a physical, high-end product. I will use traditional internet marketing methods to make sales to hotels, clubs etc.

Here are the videos of a very similar product that I almost copy it & add more features:

youtube.com/watch?v=AICq53U3dl8
youtube.com/watch?v=avGZoKnw8sI
youtube.com/watch?v=pwoVPkJIUr8

The material cost of one piece of this product is around $15K.

I didn't conduct a market test but I showed those videos to some potential customers and they said 'WOW'. But I know that it doesn't mean that they will definitively buy it. Because the product is expensive, no less than $25K.

Do you think that my product will be sold enough to make a living on it? What other methods do you recommend for selling such a product?

Your comments are highly appreciated!

Thanks,
Alp

Just watched the one video and I see VEGAS its very cool, and the Bellagio comes to mind, if they dont already have it, they would be my first call as they do lots of stuff with water.

For cutting edge technology, $25K is nothing especially in Vegas, but there are many ways to utilize this technology.

I agree, 25K may be 'expensive' for a consumer product, but your isn't and for an industrial/commercial product, 25K is normally peanuts.

As for 'criticism', all I can say is I've seen quite a few of those here in for quite some time (Singapore and Hong Kong malls) though, so it's not really new. They even have it in kiddie science parks. I believe they have that in vegas for quite some time.

I guess you will never know unless you try it. It may seem trite, but actually some sales I've made myself have been surprising. For example, I've been selling high end Amazon products for over $100,000 just by writing articles about them in trade magazines. These included chandaliers, restaurant and industrial equipment, and even art. So I don't see how any high end product could really be a hard sell with targeted marketing, perhaps by doing press releases and hitting up some trade publications.

I live in Turkey and my target locations are the hotels in Turkey, and the Europe. I also hopes for selling to Arabian hotels & malls.

I've never seen this product in Turkey, even though many of Europe's best hotels and largest malls are located in this country.

Do you suggest finishing the first product before starting marketing, or start marketing right now to gather some customers to sell when it's ready?

If I start marketing now, what if a prospect wants to see the product running live?

You are confident you have the correct instruction for making this device without having already made one?

Is it possible to make a partial or small scale model of this?

Also, would it be maybe more beneficial to sell the plans on how to build one of these?

Perhaps there is a reason similiar products are not seen there in Turkey? If you have no competition consider there may not be a market for this product. However, if you can "WOW!" some prospects, see if you can get a substantial deposit that would indicate a stronger committment. Personally, I like going after highly competitive markets, but if you get even one customer, the publicity alone could be effectively exploited through online/offline press releases, magazines, etc.

That's a very good opportunity if the market isn't that familiar with it... I suggest you give it a shot

Casinos here in Canada would eat that up

I have not seen that here ... yet

Of course the real magic is being the first to present such a thing, the novelty factor may limit the adoption level, the biggest water show hotel in Vegas might want to add one, but a second is less likely to copy them.

I image getting a representative already established in the supply industry and in contact with the potential clients would be the way to market, rather than internet a banner ads.

Providing there are no patents in place I wound imagine many, including water show specialists and Asian makers of LED signs would be looking to commercialize it at relatively low costs.

Some perhaps less purely artistic variations might extend the interest in the concept, getting away from the pure water color and adding lighting with special optics might allow variations to be dialed in, so installation A doesn't resemble installation to as much of an extent. Imagine the rainbow you see in the mist of a waterfall.

Wow i havnt seen one of these before, really amazing product. This sort of product would be amazing for public advertising, i recomend contacting companies directly offering your product, or possibly setting up this waterfall thing and having companies pay you to write their name or logo or a message... that way they dont have to buy the actual product but they can still use it.

The VERY first thing you need to do is to check international patents for this product. The product you link to is called aquascript and it's been around for a few years now. I imagine that there are international patents in place and/or pending.

Also, 15K sounds super low, in fact almost impossible, to re-create one of these from scratch. I'm in the product design and development industry and the biggest problem I can see, besides potential patent infringement, is all of the additional cost requirements to get a product like this to market.

It's a very cool product and if you could really do something similar yourself, I think you could do well but do a lot of research and planning before you invest in making one.

As was mentioned before, you could and should make a small scale model that you could use for demonstrations and sales first.
