Windows Movie Maker grey screen vs. my sales video

I know this isn't a tech support forum but there's a good chance someone before me has tried to use Windows Movie Maker to cut together their sales video.

Basically it's images with a voice over and on the preview it's fine. I had my timing down and everything but everytime I encode it (either locally or onto YouTube or something) it becomes a grey mess.

Googling the problem just tells me it's a compatibility issue so I looked at that.

Removed the audio (still happens) and tried in .gif .bmp .jpg .png and... I think there was another one there somewhere.

So I'm wracking my brains now trying to sort this, and my traffics going to waste until I can.

Any help - much appreciated. I'm hoping to avoid having to re-cut the timings and everything but at least that way I'd get the sales video up. I'm tempted to just Camtasia the preview part of the screen.

Have you tried exporting to avi?

The formats you listed are for still images, not video.

Yes the formats I listed are images I tried to use - there can be 'compatibility issues' with some types of images.

If I'd been trying to export a video as a .jpg I'd have bigger problems I feel.

I would try adding one element at a time and see where exactly it goes bad. So maybe try the audio alone first, then add one picture, see what happens, and then another etc. WMM can be a nightmare sometimes.

Ok even the default 'example video' that comes with Windows encodes the same way so I'm wondering if it's a codec issue or something?

I'm not sure what affects a video encode but I'm at least glad that it's not an issue with my video itself.

You can not select the background color is the title of the clip is used in the overlay track title as the background color is transparent, but you can select a title if the clip is used in the video track. Screen shots would you think that helps to describe the problem.
