      LOL...pretty simple huh?

I would have to go with this. I have still remembers those first months, and now that I'm helping out a couple of friends with their business, I can totally see the same pattern. The problem is all mental, but when some works hard, and for weeks or months at a time and still don't have their first sale it's hard for them to really commit and believe in the whole IM system. The sooner their first sale comes around, the sooner they are to believe that this actually is real...and real money can actually be made.

I think giving Google your credit card number and firing up an ill-conceived ad campaign that drains thousands of dollars from your pocket into theirs would be much worse.

Sadly, this happens all the time.

Clicking on your own ads in Adsense and get disabled.

Not setting a daily budget in your PPC campaign and lose hundreds in the first day of the campaign

Spend thousands on these make millions working in your underwear for 5 minutes a day offer...

How is getting a quick sale a bad thing for a newbie?

I would say being naive and getting scammed.

      Agree!

So many newbies fail to make any money online in their desired timeframe and then convince themselves that no one does and it's all a big scam. They walk away and never discover that the internet is a gold mine, they just hadn't found the right tools yet.

So giving up early due to lack of results and 'believing' it's not possible I think is the worst thing that can happen.

I made a few sales (5) during my first month of article marketing. I do not think this is a bad thing. It has shown me that you can make money online and has motivated me to work harder. I do not think I am an expert or even more than a lucky noob. I am having fun with it (which, in my opinion is the point).

I will say that until I get more experience, everything I do revolves around free traffic (blogs, ezinearticles, comments, etc). I know this limits my income potential, but it also limits my potential loss to merely my free time.

    Just my 2 cents.

No way. A sale is vindication and substantiation that it can be done. I remember my first sale in 1998. What a thrill. Just like catching a trout on a fly that you tied.

And the rest is history. FREEDOM!!!

Failing to calculate their adsense budget is the worst thing.
But, There is no such thing called failure, only experience that exists.

Why? My philosophy is: If I can do it once ... I can do it again ... and again .... and again.

Having a dishonest marketer beat an honest one to the first sale.

But I agree with the quick sale too...that can really get one's hopes up which causes mass money spending which causes frustration and disappointment.

If they are using adwords, accidently put $100 in stead of $10

check their bank accoutn 5 days later and they are -$500

      AND

No sales.. because they had a product that doesnt convert..

that's the worse thing that could happen

@winebuddy: I agree with you but let me ad a little.

Worst thing = A noob direct linking to a Clickbank sales page with his/her first attempt at adwords and having success. I've seen a ton of these posts. The joy does not usually last many more campaigns

Having someone say that they'll help you get started and you never hear from them again. You get dissed, after you got totally geeked up and told everyone you're going to be a successful internet marketer.

  • Call me crazy but...

All good thoughts - it's been interesting to read some of them.

Although I haven't renewed my psychic license yet for '09, I'm going to practice some unregulated mind reading and take a guess at what I think the OP was trying to get at.

DISCLAIMER: The opinions expressed by The Crazy Internet Dude do not necessarily reflect those of the OP or the WF or anyone else. Kids, do not try this at home.

I think what he was trying to get at by saying making a "quick buck" is the worst thing that can happen to a newbie is because it gives them a false sense of how to make long term money and build a real business.

Anybody can get lucky the first time around. It's just like a one-hit wonder in the music business. There are too many gimmicky ways to make money that work the first or second time around but dry out even faster.

How many "I made $3,456.78 my first four hours!" product pitches have you seen? Sure, it happened once, but the most important question:

How many times can you repeat it?

Hope I wasn't too far off base OP.

And I think the WORST thing that can happen to a newbie is to upload the home video of your "let's try something new night" to YouTube instead of that product demo you THOUGHT you were uploading...

    Blessed New Year to all...

      Yep this too of course!

Honestly....this goes for any newbie...but if you really want to get things and gear and settle your ass down to build your own business...and build it right...this is what I suggest...

Look through Eric Louviere's posts, and look through his products. I don't commission for saying this, and there are of course many others on this forum and all over that dish out some great advice and really help others...his just my personal favorite..and IMO one of the best.

I'm not a newbie but his advice, his perspective on things, and his teachings have pushed me further in 5 weeks than I've been in 3 years...

Lack of persistence and the idea that this or any business is so easy to do. The people that are the most successful in life have laid the ground work and keep pounding away at the wall until they make it happen.

Having a quick sale is great. But you need to remember that this is just the start. You have to keep working at it. Pushing forward and building upon every success that you have.

  • Starting up a PPC Campaign when you know very little about copywriting and creating an effective landing page.
    Can be an expensive mistake!

Or making a quick buck selling crap online and thinking that it pays to be a 'scam artist' and not provide valuable content
