Have I made a mess of this

I may have made a mess of my hopes to market online. I am a woodworker as a hobby and I make an item that everyone that sees one wants one. I belong to a woodworking forum and have been posting instructions on how to make them. I have 9 posts on instructions and am about done with these posts. I registered a domain name and plan to make a web site very soon and offer all the instructions in a ebook. Hopefully I can sell a video series and publish a Kindle book also.

Since I have already posted the instructions in a woodworking forum will this look like duplicate content when I put it on my website. Will this sequence of activity ruin any chance of success?

Sorry for the long windedness

Wayne

not at all wayne.. if you have your content written in pdf format the search engines won't have access to that.

You would not want to put your guide's content on your site -

It would be better to create your site targeting keywords specific to your niche market which would be wood working

create some keyword rich article content and mabey some cool videos for your website

and advertise that content to rank your site in the search engines and get traffic to your wood working website

build a list with an optin and build a relationship with the people who come to your site by helping them learn cool things about wood working

after awhile when you have good traffic and a list generated that is when i suggest you create your wood working product and promote it to your list

im sure then you will make alot of sales ~

    Hope this helps

      First of all....

Duplicate content seems to be a bit of a myth.

Google won't penalize you for having the same content as another site. Duplicate content penalties really only apply to content on the same site.

There is some debate over whether or not Google gives more weight to the original source of the article or not, I believe it does, but I doubt it would significantly impact your site or your traffic.

So no, I don't think you've made a mistake here.

In fact, by helping and giving valuable tips to people in your niche, I'd say you're off to a great start by establishing some authority and trust.

      Good luck.

Firstly PDF files can be read by the search engines so if you wanted you could put all your PDF's in one directory and tell the bots to exclude that directory with a robots.txt file.

Otherwise, I would be posting the instructions in different wording than you have on the forums, ie; don't copy/paste.

It is true that duplicate content is waaay over-regarded as a bad thing, but I do still believe original content is better, so I would write the instructions in different words if they are going to be on your website for the public to see.

You certainly have made no mistakes though, establishing your authority in the niche is priceless, keep it up and best of luck with your plans!

No, you haven't ruined your chances at all. In fact, whatever you've posted will likely just bolster the fact that you are the expert on these things so your ebook will be the one to buy. And realistically, there are 6 billion or so people on this planet and it is pretty unlikely that they all know about that forum anyway. Just make sure that your ebook is super in-depth and you'll be fine.

Yup...I agree. You've not messed anything up. Build your website. Add great content. Then get backlinks to your site with your desired keyword.

      Put your keyword

      In the domain
      In the description
      In the title tags
      Then sprinkled throughout the content

Target one keyword phrase per page.

Get backlinks to your pages with it's desired keyword.

Even if your original forum posts containing the instructions ranks in google you can outrank it with backlinks.

Also you may want to add extras to your product so the contacts you've already made in the forum may purchase.

      Good luck to you.

Is it the thing in your avatar?

        What is it?

I'm intrigued. I think I may want one, now that I've seen it.

My avatar is in fact what I make. These are kaleidoscopes. Not many people make them anymore. The one I show was made by the man that taught me how to make them. I don't make that exact one but mine are made of all different species of wood. Thanks for the help from everyone.

How interesting: do you ship finished products to Europe?

There's some good information and some misinformation above, as is so often the way here. In your situation, I would not, myself, be worrying about "duplicate content", though.

So far I have never shipped any to Europe but I would find out how if there was enough interest there.

In the woodworking forum all the 9 modules I have posted have a word count nearing 4500. There are at least 2 more modules to post to fully clean up the instructions. I expect to have over 5000 words by then. Is this enough for an ebook and maybe a Kindle version too.

Thanks to everyone for your replies.

Yes there are 23 pictures in my photo gallery in the forum. These pictures are there in hopes they will clear up any unclear areas in the written instructions. I could put more there but I think what I did mostly covers it.

                    Thanks

    Don't worry mate.

All this has done is push you towards the "Expert in the Niche" position!

In fact, hows this for a suggestion?

Instead of merely posting up the content on your site, why don't you break
    them down into powerpoint slides.

Then, make these 9 instructional articles 9 instructional videos instead! A video
of you presenting the powerpoint slides.

Think bout it. There are quite a few people who do this to great effect on youtube!

Personally i would reword all of the instructions and make sure they are all keyword rich. Plus revising these instructions will be a good thing on the off chance that a mistake of some sort was made.
