Can you please tell me about Twitter?

I've noticed the Gurus all inviting me lately to follow them on Twitter.

I know Twitter is some kind of social bookmarking, but how does it benefit me to have a bunch of people following me?

Can someone please explain how this works?

    it's good to have your list follow you on twitter, but mass following is a waste of time

          what would you say is the best way to use twitter if you've got a something to sell (product/service) or do you think that it doesn't work well for commercial applications? if not, what social media website works best for that?

    Benefit for large follwer list, is that if you post message like "ohh, after hard work, I finaly launch my blog: myblog.com". And if they like your blog, they may refer it in theirs blogs... But I think it is not worth doing it.

    I think best results from twitter you get, if you refer a blog, which is full of great information, advices, stories from life and etc. Rather, information about your product/service... But IMO twitter is not for me, because there I can got low targeted traffic(I mean it for my nearest future project). Maybe if you have blog->product/service , hmm example about ("How to loose weight"), I think it's bigger chance to get a good traffic and sales..
