Wow, PR recalculation works fast!

I was just freshening up an old Squidoo lens that I have which had a PR of 2. It took me 5 minutes to add two little modules. When I published it and the page reloaded it now has a PR of 1

I guess the slightest changes on a page really adjust PR, but that quick? The only thing that I did was add one outbound link for a related service, so I suppose that really did it.

No, PR doesn't change that fast. It's likely a coincidence.

Nope, PR is usually done anywhere between 6-12 month intervals, but strangely, the PR has been updated a lot in the past 3 or 4 months. I think we have had 3.

And the reason yours jumped is because Google updated the PR today.

Yep, many PR updates lately. Went from 0 to 2 to 1. Not sure if there were 2 or 3 updates, but there were updates for sure!

I know that PR doesn't change all that often, and that it was probably just perfect timing, but I have seen it shift here and there. So anyway, today was an update? Here's a silly question. Where can I keep track of the PR updates and when they are planned?

      Thanks all for your help!

Google do not ever tell anyone otherwise everyone would simply buy advertising from link farms for just that one day and then end up with a false reading.

They would much rather spring it on us randomly and if you happen to have everything sorted then you get lucky, if you don't then tough.

    To the OP

I know this might sound silly, but you are aware PR runs from 0 (the worst) to 10 (the best?)

So you actually had a drop in page rank?

Am I the only one who gets sick of hearing about this arbitrary number called Page Rank? I wish they'd do away with it...

Its not so important for rankings but what it does enable is two things:

      1) It enabled me to see if something is going in the right direction in terms of google liking what it sees.

      and

      2) More importantly, because the PR is an indication of a sites quality, it helps google determine the quality of the the sites you are recieving backlinks from, which in turn help you rank. Which is why the higher the PR of the backlink, the stronger it is and the more it benefits your site.

I strongly suspect they're moving (more than ever before) in that direction.

Page-ranks are less and less important all the time.

One can see this from the way that lower-PR pages now outrank higher-PR pages more than ever in Google's SERP's, and the fact that high-PR backlinks from non-context-relevant sites are greatly devalued whereas low-PR backlinks from relevant sites are worth more and more, etc. etc.

If you ask people selling backlinks, of course, you'll get a totally different perspective (:rolleyes but as so many expert authors are now saying, it's becoming clear that page-ranks are losing even more relevance. Fortunately.

I don't think PR plays much a role in some things. I think it just feels good to have a high PR page on a site, or homepage. I do like to grab high PR links though - that's fun.
