Need Some Fun, Blackhat Revenge Help

I just came across someone ripping the graphics on my affiliate page for use on their affiliate page. They didn't bother to copy them, they're having my server burn my resources to serve the images to their website. I think this is called hot linking.

To address the problem I came across this site http://www.alistapart.com/articles/hotlinking/ describing how to capture the hot linking referer and serve a html page instead giving proper credit to the image.

That gave me a wicked idea.

What I would like to do is let them grab the image, but to also drop my affiliate cookie with it. Steal my images then you also get my affiliate code stuffed on your visitors.

Any ideas on how to pull this off?

(This new forum needs the send a beer option. I used to send out lots of beers for stuff like this.)

there's a much more fun solution...

Change the image name in your html and the file name on your server and then replace the file they are stealing with porn.

Or better yet - a graphic that says "this page is a SCAM! For the REAL DEAL go to www.Mysite.com!"

    Fun, fun!

I was also going to suggest you create a new graphic, which says what they do, and you could do a click here on it. Make the image clickable to your website/affiliate link.

You can also in your hosting ban all hotlinking, but be careful if you don't have a reseller account, your own graphics would also be banned.

Give the graphics a new name and make sure you change it to the new name on your site.

I like the idea of changing the images to something really funny, that's cool.

You should go ahead and change your site over like already suggested, then maybe create a slightly altered graphic that looks similar but isn't the same thing, only a subtle but really funny change that may not get noticed by the site owner, but hopefully will by visitors.

Make it clickable with your affiliate link, like suggested already, that's funny.

Lots of visitors click on images, so you would probably get some traffic just by making the image clickable to your affiliate link.

      Good luck.

I do have this domain on a shared host and not on my dedicated server.

I was intrigued about capturing the referer because I do not want to change the graphic file name. The reason is that it ranks high in Google Images and is drawing a surprising amount of traffic. Don't want to mess with that.

Interesting tidbit (not to hijack my own thread or anything) - I have an alt tag for the graphic. However, Google has tagged the graphic instead with text above the graphic, but not immediately above it.

That is, in my web page structure is:

sentence Google associates with the graphic in its search results
      2 blank lines using < br >
      a single line of text
a block quote used to indent the graphic with an alt tag

    Kindsvater,

For the record: that's not "blackhat"; it's "asshat".

    Pardon the expletive.

        Brian,

I know you want to get the visitor but if that's not possible how about this text for a bit of evil fun? Even if the visitors to your own site see it they would probably find it amusing.

If you see this graphic on (offending URL) it was stolen from a very successful lawyer at (your URL).
He is now considering whether to sue for $5 million or $10 million.

Since he's a loser he probably doesn't get much traffic anyway so it's
not worth the hassle of inserting aff links. I would replace the image
with something embarrasing just to teach him a lesson.
