Need advice on selling a digital product

Hi all,

I need a little guidance on selling an ebook from my website. I don't quite know the process after the customer clicks on the PayPal button. I have my sales copy done and have generated the code for the PayPal purchase button but what do I need to setup for the download part of the process.

Do I need some sort of download management software or a download management service? If so, which one? Is there a way to protect my downloadable product for free without the use of a service or having to purchase software and have it automated? As much details as can be provided would be appreciated.

Take care.
Ken

Hi, Ken. You can automate it with PayPal pretty much the same way you do it with Clickbank.

    Step A
Sign in to your PayPal account at www.paypal.com. Click the "Merchant Services" tab.
That will take you to the page shown below.
Select the "Buy Now Button" option.

    Step B
Next you will see the initial page for setting up your sale item. Select the appropriate
options from this page including the title for the product and the price amount.
Click the "Step 3: Customize" link at the bottom of the page.

    Step C
Now you are on a page with several more options. The two shown below are the most important ones.
The first option specifies the page where customers go if they cancel the order before completing it.
The second option is for the download page. This is the page on your website where you provide the download hyperlink.
After specifying these two pages, click "Create Button" to generate the HTML.

Does that do it for you? - Russ

      Hey Russ,

      Great reply.

I like how you laid it out step by step.

Personally though, I would go with at least DLGaurd. That way your downloads are halfway protected.

Plus, you need to start thinking about an affiliate program. How are you going to get affiliates? One of the advantages of having your own product is being able to leverage that product with affiliates.

So, I would say least start looking at different affiliate programs. I.e. Clickbank, Rapid Action Profits, seven dollar script, JVManager Fantasos, OneShoppingCart

To truly protect your download area without buying software or subscribing to a service is not really possible. You might try e-junkie.com. I believe they have a $5 trial program.

As soon as possible you should put in place a process that captures the email addresses of your buyers.

    - The download page URL (in paypal ) can be turned into a opt-in page ( for bonuses/updates) which they must confirm before they get their product.

    - Then you can send them a email that leads to your actual download page.

    - You can put the actual download page in a directory that has a password on it:

    - Hopefully you can put a password on your ebook so that it won't get passed all over the internet for free.

    Hope This Helps!!

Exactly Lance - you must balance simplicity with technology.

All of my products are sold through either 1ShoppingCart with an autoresponder message triggered by successful sale notification (Paypal, Clickbank or my own merchant account depending on the product/service) or through Clickbank where download page is identified as part of the product setup process.

Any attempt I've made at using scripts, software or additional security tactics within the ebook itself has led to more trouble than benefit -- keep it simple, the instance of piracy is lower than most think and will occur inevitably anyway.

    Ken,

This is how it should work:

Your buyer adds the product to youir cart if you have one or simply click on purchase link > goes to paypal > after SUCCESSFUL transaction > redirected to your web ste > registers > downloads the ebook.

You can give lifetime access or just few days to download link depending on your interest.

    Hi Ken,

I'm the owner/developer of DLGuard: DLGuard - Download page protector, create expiring download links

This is software that makes setting up a Paypal product very easy, and secure.

Basically you add your product to DLGuard, and DLGuard gives you a sales link to paste onto your page.

Simple as that - no need to create Paypal buttons, no need to set up redirect pages, no need to set up download pages, download links, or messing with Paypal at all.

    It's all automatic.

And best of all, it's really smooth for your customers as well - no need to display forms asking for their details.

Apart from making product setup very quick and easy, DLGuard will also create expiring download links for you automatically to help with your product security.

If you have any questions about DLGuard, let me know - I'm happy to help!

    cheers

I LOVE DLGuard! As someone who didnt use any management software for the first 8 - 9 months of my IM career I can say that DLGuard makes life soooo much easier when it comes to securing downloads, resending downloads, setting up payment across multiple platforms, etc. I would not be without it now. Thanks Sam for the awesome software.

      Hi,

Russ, thanks for the awesome, detailed response with the screenshots - I love that. I am a visual person so that was perfect for me!

Shannon, good point about the affiliate program. I do have both the 7 dollar script and JV Manager before it became Fantasos. Which one is recommended? Is JV Manager complicated as it seems (I'm not quite sure how to set it up)? I'm a little technically challenged.

Lance, I'm a bit confused about your reply. You said to get the email addresses from PayPal but in the next section you said you would piss people off by making the download page into an opt-in. How would you handle the process of email gathering? I was going to encourage customers to "register" their product in order to receive any future updates for free.

Sam, thanks for your imput about your product. It looks like a great product but unfortunately the wallet is pretty empty right now, so I will have to save my pennies and find an alternative for now.

So is Clickbank ultimately the way to go or something like 7 Dollar script or JV Manager? I thought of Clickbank but my product is very specific (about cars) and there is no other product similar that is on Clickbank. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Thanks for all the replies already and any future replies to these questions. Warriors ROCK!

What I said would piss them off is requiring an opt-in before they can download a product they've already paid for.

An OPTIONAL opt in on the DOWNLOAD PAGE urging customers to "register" their product for free updates is perfectly fine.

My reference to getting emails from PayPal was that you should let your customers download the products they pay for without jumping through any hoops. Then you can just get the email addresses from PayPal and put them on a customer list. Of course you'll want to explain to them in your first message (verification message) that they're receiving this message because they bought X product on Y date and that you'll be sending periodic updates, etc. And that you won't be able to contact them about future updates unless they confirm that they indeed want to recieve them by clicking the confirmation link.

Thanks David. I will check that out. Having the first product free is great. As mentioned, I have a hole in my wallet right now and DLGuard is something that I would have to work toward and possibly purchase later down the road. Anybody have any more feedback about how to apply either the $7 script or JV Manager for product delivery. Any further input about these would be appreciated.

      Thanks again everyone.

Someone mentioned collecting names as soon as possible. Just a thought. There are some very, very successful Clickbank vendors who list a product in the Marketplace and when someone clicks on their product name, rather than being taken to a pitch page, they are taken directly to an opt-in page where they must give up their name and email to get a free PDF file or video on the topic.

Then, in that PDF file or video, links are presented which offer their main product. If the listing for the giveaway product and main product are in the same Clickbank account, the Clickbank cookie that is set on the visitor's computer for the giveaway will carry through if they get the main product too (assuming they don't clear the cookies in their browser cache).

This means that affiliates will get a commission if they direct traffic to the opt-in page and the visitor later buys the main product.

This method captures names--and I know you want sales Ken, but the names can be marketed to again and again with pitches for your products and those of others as affiliates. Go make a million!

      Thanks Mike.

Do you think that asking for an optin first before the sales copy would annoy alot of people?

OK, I'm still trying to sort out my best option . I do know that even though DLGuard sounds great, I will have to pass for now. E-junkie sound great and is very reasonably priced, so definately an option, but even at $5/month I haven't tested yet to see if my product will even sell or not (yes, I know I did this backwards and made the product before researching the market - but it is a passion of mine.)

So, free is even a little bit better option. Then once I see that it sells, I can select something else if needed.

Digitalproductdelivery.com is a free option for my ebook but I noticed that it only supports PayPal. Is that a concern?

As I also mentioned, I do have both the $7 script and JV Manager1. I have heard that JVM is a bit difficult to setup and work with - especially for a no-techie like me. Is that true?

Anyway, any further input is greatly appreciated.

      Take care all,

Ken, this is something you'll have to test out for yourself. There is no telling which method would be better for your particular product without testing both methods.
