What's The Best Way To Set Up An Online Society?

OK, so I'm thinking about setting up a society or club
in a specific niche market.

I want to offer each member the opportunity to...
  1. Set up personal bio/profile pages
  2. Set & post to their own blog
  3. Network with/friend/follow other members
  4. Join specialist groups/sub-groups

The site should be capable of offering membership
at multiple levels (Free & paid) and integrate with
an autoresponder (preferably aweber)

I'd also like to be able to offer link/banner ads.

So, is there a platform/script that would do all that?

Thanks

John

Hey John, you may want to check out what Joomla has to offer when it comes to building these types of sites: Communities - Joomla! Extensions Directory

I was using Joomla all the time before I sold out and went to Wordpress. One of the benefits is since it's open source many times you can find developers (on the cheap) to customize things for you.

    Thanks Mark,

Doh! When I think about it... Joomla would
be an obvious choice. I guess we've all got so
used to using Wordpress we forget that there
are lots of other platforms out there.

I think vbulletin allows you to do that. Maybe check them out too.

Ning is a community platform that allows you members to setup their own blog, I had a little group left stranded when their basic service was no longer free. It might be a bit too simple and easy to operate but they have some plugins to add functionality.

One guy I have seen speaking at conferences is Tim Schmidt, who created a concealed weapon carry association and has taught some courses on setting up membership sites, I recall he went into some detail on creating an association in a promo-presentation, one course he did a while ago was Tribal Formula System.

you can also look for free social networking script...you can have like a friendly facebook type society going on...

there are free scripts so I'd say building a social networking site would be very effective.

There is a free open source script available that goes by the name "dolphin". Might check it out.

Has the flexibility to build sites like myspace, facebook, youtube and much more.
