If I hire a virtual employee and pay them hourly, how do I know that they actually worked for the number of hours they say they did?

And if someone hires me to do work for them, how can I prove to them that I actually worked for the exact number of hours I said I did?

Is there any sort of time clock software that makes this possible?

Even if you don't find software for this, I would say this,,, as long as you are happy with their production, and they produce what you ask for in the time frame that you expect it, that should be good enough, right?

Give them a project with a deadline and if they make it, then they must be doing their work as expected.

And you too,,, you produce what people ask for in their time frame.

Agree 100%. Don't pay someone to put the hours in, pay them to get the job done. Know why you're hiring them and what your expectations are from the beginning. That's the best way to get your money's worth.

You can do what Independent Contractors do. They're simply hired to do a Job and they are paid hourly. For example:

Employer: I need 'x' done. How many hours do you think that will take you?
Employee: Hmm...I should be able to get it done in about 5 hours

Then you just pay them for 5 hours. Whether it only took them 3, or it took them 7. OR you can set a time frame that you think is viable for what you need done (as long as they understand and agree)

Like robert said, if they do a good job then paying them a few hours over here and there shouldn't really matter.

Try to implement this. The Pomodoro Technique. I used this technique for a Canadian hosting company while working as a full time developer.

    Hi James,

Yes, there are tools that can track the employee performance with respect to time, it can even dig deeper in getting time spent on a page/software/tool/website, etc. So, you can know what your employee is or was doing at a particular time and which tool or where exactly he was working too. I use Replicon Inc - employee time clock, to track all my employee's activities.

    Hope this helps...

I agree with Robert X, you should try to find a person that is productive without the need to track her every move.

Also, good VA will not feel comfortable, even if they don't admit it, to having someone track their every move.

I totally agree with you, if you get to find the right person for the job you just have to trust your contractors and most likely they will pay you back with good work with that trust. Imagine being tracked while working, if you are not comfortable with it then, most likely your contractors would feel the same. There are factors that cannot be measured in hourly work monitoring softwares, moments when they are thinking.... I believe the best criteria here is the quality of work given at the expected turn around time.

I would never outsource something I hadn't first done myself so i at least have an idea about the end result versus expected time. At the end of the day, like many things in business - it needs to be done on trust too.

  • Would you want to have an employee who is going to waste time to finish a task? What if there is a person who can finish an 2-hour task into 30minutes? Which do you prefer. It would be best to go for a person who can finish work right away instead of making them work 8 hours to finish a 30-minute task.

As to a software, there are free and paid ones. But clients prefer to use teamviewer. It's a free software which you can use to check your employee when he is actually working.

The best advice is to give your employees certain tasks that must be completed within a certain deadline

Why not hire them on a cost per project basis instead. As a freelance writer I always tell my clients that it is fairer to both to cost out a project and not try to pay by the hour.

Actually, virtual hiring is some thing different from hiring in the office. In the office you can implement automated time clock systems to monitor working hours. But virtually you can use online platforms of hiring where the virtual employee is bound to enter working hours manually or else he/she will not be paid the hourly wage after a week. Based on performance you can analyze which employee is working good.

I don't see why the person who hired you would want to know the exact hours you used of you meet up with the agreed job. Well it depends, some outsourcing sites like odesk comes with time tracker that shows the employer the exact hours you worked.
