Advice for a newbie starting out?

I've just graduated from University and I've been researching the Internet Marketing avenue for a few months now. I have my own sports memorabilia business which brings in decent money however I want to start branching into the Internet Marketing scene now as another venture to increase my profits.

My only problem is, I've read and bought lots of information on ways to make money but I'm confused which avenue to start off.

I have all this advice and ideas regarding, starting a blog, promoting affiliate products, selling products I have resale rights to, creating my products to sell etc and understand the mechanics behind each idea etc

BUT

I'm confused where the starting point is?

Do any more experienced members have some advice for me?

  • My 2 cents....

Stay off any Google Adsense Model, no matter how easy, cheap or mind-blowing it might seem, coz it isn't.

Pick one solid Internet marketing Business Model -- like let's say building a list -- and focus on that.

Perhaps you want to do blogging? Stick with that.

Monetized Blogging + affiliate marketing + Building a list = I think this would be great.

The important thing isn't which model you choose. It is how much life you pour into your business, focus and commitment.

    Cheers

I agree with Lisa. Pick one area to focus on and start from there. It's very easy to get overwhelmed and confused when you try too many things at once.

When things get tough, stick with it. This is what separates the successful from the rest.

Don't let anyone tell you it's easy. If it were easy, everyone would be rich. You can do it.

      Be Great Today!

Whatever it is that you choose, make sure that you stick with it long enough to really determine if it works (for you) or not. There are so many different ways to profit online like you mentioned that if you are not careful you will almost definitely find yourself jumping from one thing to the next because you are not seeing profit or results straight away.

Just treat it as a business and put in the work required for as long as it takes.

Start where you are. If you've got a sports memorabilia business, start marketing that, and grow it by adding your own products to it. I've got no idea what sports memorabilia involves, but I imagine there are millions of people interested in it.

You could, for example, write a series of ebooks on how to make money with sports memorabilia. While you're doing that, set up a forum. Create Web sites (after you've chosen profitable keywords) to bring more traffic to your business and products...

There are endless things you COULD do. Pick one, and start. NOW. :-)

    Cheers

    Hi James,

First of all, let me tell you that there are several ways you can make money online. Now it's upto you whic technique will work for you.
Do you have any special skill- writing, designing? Then you can get started as a freelancer.
If not, don't panic, must have heard of affiliate marketing.Choose your niche.Find out what interests you most- sports, automobiles, health ...anything? Then start choosing the products/programs very diligently. You can't just refer anything and everything.. it has to be of high quality.
YOu can also, start creating your own products - eBook, software etc and sell them online.
Since you already have an existing business, why not take it online?

These are just some of the things you could do to make money online.
However, whatever you choose to do, be very methodical. Plan it well and ahead. Prepare your to do list, set your goals and work sticking to it and towards it.

With a proper business plan, you can't go wrong. And keep researching- allot some time to do only research and study trends.

    Make 2009 your year.
Anything,I can do to help? I am just a PM away.
    All the best

I think the best advice anyone starting out is to never give up... keep fighting and working at what you have set out in front of you. Do not switch from scheme to scheme, just pick one and make it work.

Additionally, pick a niche that you are passionate about... after all, you will be writing about it for a bit.

      Process looks like this...

      1. Pick a market/opportunity where you KNOW money is being made (could be an ebook getting great results you've identified on Clickbank, Commission Junction, Linshare, etc...) or a service that is selling, etc... - it all starts with identifying a combination of demand and supply - so that you know there is a way to make money.

      2. Next, study the marketing - insert yourself into the process through out-marketing the competition (this may mean better targeting of keywords, better social networking skills, getting more publicity, etc... - you need a marketing advantage)

      3. Take action - try until you get initial results, then look at scaling your effort bigger through more products, higher prices, more profit, bigger team, more automation, etc...

That's the best way to start - too many people try guessing at #1, then throw lots of time and money behind #2 and #3 only to discover there is littel demand for what they are trying to sell.

      Jeff
