Overwhelmed...information overload

Anyone else, in the newbie arena, experiencing this?

I just keep getting lost in thread and thread, post after post on here and have trouble keeping my thoughts straight. There is SO much information on IM on here, some I am sure considered "poor" and others considered "great". Unfortunately, any newbie won't truly know the difference easily.

It is just so hard to focus on one thing when I keep having to open a new tab in firefox for a brand new thread telling me "xyz is the best way to make money"

sigh...

I am SO in the same boat. The first method I picked I followed for 5 months and got NOWHERE. Now that i have read a bunch of info, I found out why it didn't work.
I am giving myself one week of research and then I am putting a plan into action. I think the main thing is- set yourself a budget to spend on IM and stick with it. The main disappointment will be losing money. I have a budget set right now and once I earn it back I will set a new budget.
Also- one system may have made a person thousands and another person zilch. I am going to incorporate a bunch of methods into my own and run with it for 3 months. Then I will evaluate all my stats and either adjust what I did or leave those to run and try something new. Only time and experimenting will tell!!!

It is extremely overwhelming here. Unless you know exactly what you want to do it almost seems like the best way to pick something is to throw a dart and see where it sticks.

Find something that connects with you whether it be blogging, static page, etc and just start from there. One small step at a time.

I too am a plagued with "information overload". It's easy to get that affliction here on the WF.

Big Mike is exactly correct...stop and focus on whatever you like the most or think will be the most successful. In other words, carry out your existing plan to completion before moving on to the next "bigger and better" one.

I have to tell myself this over and over EVERY day. Nothing worthwhile is easy, but if you focus and persevere...happiness is just around the bend.

LOL. Big Mike has a good point. Another approach to clear the clutter in your mind is to pick a topic you have a strong interest in. Important: write down ways you could share information on that topic with others (maybe a website, ebook, making a video, creating a podcast, write an article, etc.). Check out similar topics through an online search engine for ways to put your topic together. It's a starting point.

I agree with Teresa... There are many ways to make money with IM, and you need to pick one and focus on it without deviation.

A few ideas to get you started:
    -Blogging
    -Affiliate Marketing
    -List Building
    -Article Marketing
    -Video Marketing (affiliate products, etc)
    -AdSense
    -PPC
    -Arbitrage

Of course, most of the successful people here are into a few of the above, and use all of them to further their goals. That could be why you're getting so overwhelmed.

    So here's a simple plan:

    1) Register for ClickBank and find a product you believe in.
    2) Create a landing page/site that will draw customers to that product using your affiliate link.
    3) Go grab some traffic to your site using videos, articles, blog comments, squidoo or whatever other traffic techniques you can think of (there are many)...

...then move on to another product.

    Make sense?

    -Cam

    Hi,

I'm also new to IM and agree with what absbica and SAHM4ever have said. It can be very overwhelming. I work with two guys who have been doing this for years and so although it's great obviously to have their help and expertises everything they say sometimes goes over my head.

So thanks for taking the time out to give us newbies some advice guys. It's really appreciated :-)

I totally felt like you before. My advice is to find something you enjoy doing..whether it is blogging, creating your own products, providing a service, etc. Then create a specific goal like I will make X amount by this certain date or I will have X amount of product sold by a date. Then put blinders on and ONLY do the things that bring you closer to this goal.

I think the last step is really the hardest. But if you want to see success this is what you must do. Oh and success takes t i m e! Knowing this upfront will prepare your mind for the long haul.

Go to the WSO section and buy ONE WSO on a money making system. Then, do nothing except follow that for a couple months.

When you do come back to the WF only ask questions pertaining to bottlenecks or issues you encounter while implementing that WSO.

After a few weeks analyze your results, see what's working best, duplicate those efforts, and then start finding ways to automate

Make sure you record all your efforts, so you can sell your 'case study' to the masses afterward. A lot of people don't realize that sharing their exact steps of what they do online is a hot selling product waiting for a 'buy it' button.

Of course, a lot do...and they're pretty wealthy.

    Cheers,

That's hard to say. What attracts you the most?

As a web developer / designer site flipping might be a fairly easy model for you to implement.

Or offering services as a graphic designer (or selling PLR packs of graphics and site templates) ... You can do both of those through the Warrior Forum - No Sweat.

The list goes on...Affiliate Review Sites, Product Creation, Joint Venturing, etc.

        Pick one and PM me.

This is an important point IMO. I think it's really important you think hard about where your strengths lie and choose a business model that matches them.

Do you enjoy writing? If so, then blogging might be a good choice. PPC might suit someone who is methodical and pays attention to detail for example. Basically just make sure the path you choose suits your personality type and strengths.

Don't try to learn every traffic generation or business model. I've done that and it's a recipe for disaster. Pick one you enjoy and stick to it for atleast a few months before reviewing your results.

It's very easy to become overwhelmed with information in here if you decide to read everything

What I can suggest is to start asking questions differently...

    - Start by asking yourself - "What is it that I like to do? Something I'm passionate about" - Then do a search on this forum to see if anyone has mentioned it and take it from there.

    - If you've already passed that stage and know what you want to do, then you may want to search for information about product creation or affiliate marketing if you don't want to create your own product, but this time focus choosing the right affiliate product.

    - After you cover the above step, then you may want to search for information about setting up a website/blog for your product... You may also search for competitors to see what they are doing... Think about legal issues, security, payment system, sales funnels, design, autoresponders, website tracking.

    - Finally when you have that covered, then you can start looking into marketing your product. There are many ways to build traffic to your business, you may want to search fro PPC, Article Marketing , SEO, RSS, Videos, Press releases, Affiliate marketing, web 2.0

    - After you have that covered, then you may need to look for information about testing, client conversion and client retention

One step at a time you'll get there.

    Cheers

This is all great advice absbica, especially from Scott. I'm not necessarily a noob but I still can get overwhelmed with the amount of info and various systems being promoted and touted here. I've decided to give myself the rest of this week to do R and D on 1, maybe 2 new systems that feel confident I can accomplish.

At that point I am not looking for any more new ways to invent the wheel, I'm just gonna start rolling it down the hill. For at least a month you have to go balls to the wall on your chosen method before looking around at new avenues. Gotta set the time to get the job done, I figure, and the one common theme I have found from all the IM advice here is that there comes a point when you have start taking consistent action on your goal and stop mucking about with "the next best thing".

    Cheers!

    Edmen and Peter...good stuff.

I definitely need to just focus. As mentioned in a previous thread..I am a web designer / developer so I am simply used to "x" hours will generate me specific "y" dollars, so even though I have the skill set to pump out website designs, build the code, etc... when entering the IM arena, its easy to be a deer in the headlights wondering what do I do now if I want to remove myself from that standard money equation.

One thing you can even do is to turn your talent into a product. I started of with web design as well, and what I did was to hire programmers to create scripts and I created nice layouts for them and began to sell them as ready made products.

Graphics alone are hotcakes as well, you can create banners, headers, icons etc. and bundle them all in one package and sell them at a price... Starting with Warrior Special Offer Section. That should give you some sales.

<<<< That gives me some idea even I'm great with sales pages, till date I do all my sites myself

You can even look into the JV section and you may find someone who will help you market your product for a percentage. This too can get you started.

      Cheers

There are some great suggestions above this post for newbie time control. Implement any of them ONE AT A TIME and work at it till you see results.

Here are my personal tips to control frittering and info overload.

Sometimes I even follow them myself

    1. Invest in and USE a low-tech 3 minute hourglass egg timer. This is like the one that the Wicked Witch uses so Dorothy can see her time running out in the Wizard of Oz. Keep it on the desk next to the phone and flip it 'on' when you get on the phone to make or answer a call. It would be great to limit most calls to this three minute window, but you don't have to speed-speak and get it all out of your mouth before the three minutes is up. The point of the exercise is a physical cue to make you mindful of exactly who and what is taking up your time. Cut those personal calls during your productive work hours, especially to people who still work for 'the man' with time to burn. Let them burn up someone elses' time--at least till you close the office and go home and call on 'your time'.

    2. Use an answering machine to monitor phone calls. Put your callbacks on a schedule & stick to it. I don't mean to strand any kids at soccer practice, but, you can certainly return all non-essential calls at 11 am and 4 pm without breaking a sweat.

    3. Ditto for email. Close your email client & only access it on a schedule. Sorry, but your opt-ins and joke of the day chain letters can wait.

    4. Get a cheap one hour cooking timer. Set it and get to work on that list you read about and actually sat down and wrote after you read one of the posts above this one. Start at 15 minutes for a task. When the bell rings, you're done. Optimal is 45 minutes to 1 hour in the 'zone', so work up to it. If you have a major distraction, take a mini-break and start again. Mom used to set the timer on the stove to monitor piano practicing, etc. Psychologically blocking the work like this works every time.

    5. Say 'hi' to the WF on your own time. Don't burn daylight. Make sure your work is done first. Think of it this way, if you are out playing, 'real' warriors are out eating your lunch. If you have to, keep yourself going by making up a brag post in your head, you know, the one you write when your first bazillion dollars hits the bank account by noon.

    6. Unplug the ethernet connection. (or cable, or dsl or what have you). Pretend it's 'the old days' of 1990 and you're not plugged in.

You won't wither and die, although you'll certainly feel like it while you're weaning yourself from these distractions. You will get amazing results.

So what's stopping you? Get moving.

Just keep in mind the 2 most important skills in IM

    1. Getting Traffic

    2. Making Conversions

My best advise would be to find one WSO that focuses on getting traffic (i.e. Article Marketing) and focus on that first. Don't be disappointed if the first 'system' doesn't work, keep at it until you find a way to Get Traffic.

Next, find a way to monetize that traffic (i.e. affiliate products, self-made products, CPA, etc.).

At this point, you might want to find a WSO on Making Conversions (i.e. copywriting, etc.) and focus on one method at a time. If one method doesn't work, try another method.

Above all else, focus on one and ONLY ONE method at a time.

    Best Wishes

    Scott

      Hi absbica,

You've gotten a lot of great advice in this thread, but I think there is something you should do FIRST before anything else. And that is...

...to reflect upon what you want, what you're good at, what you love to do, what interests you, what population you want to serve. THIS will be the foundation of your business success.

You see, one of the traps that is so easy to fall into is that we read about someone's success here on the Warrior Forum ($5000 in 5 Days - or whatever - you know what I mean) and we make the mistaken assumption that if we just do what they did, we'll achieve the same results.

Well, maybe that's true - OR maybe not. No matter how 'step-by-step' a plan is laid out, unless it is congruent with our own inner system (beliefs, desires, skills, passions, etc.) we are not likely to succeed.

So it would be wise to take the time to consider WHO YOU ARE in this equation, and to seek out a business model that is consistent with your own goals, not someone else's. No matter how well written a guide to article marketing may be, for example, if you HATE to write, and/or you don't have the money right now to outsource, pursuing it as 'your' model will be an exercise in frustration.

We put the cart before the horse when we buy into someone else's successful model and try to 'do what they did'. Don't try to fit YOU into someone else's model. Rather, find a model that fits YOU.

With that as a backdrop, I will say that when you feel ready or inclined to look at a WSO, check out Jeremy Kelsell's coaching WSO. It's fabulous, it's step-by-step, a ton of support, etc. - BUT it will only work if it matches YOU. Think before you buy.

      Hope this helps,

      -Kat

Newbies need to focus on the basic niche affiliate model...

    Which is...

    - Finding a niche
    - Finding a product for the people of the niche:
    - Slapping up a landing/warmup page:
    - Generate visitors to the page ( at least 400 )

Perhaps the most valuable skill you should master

    Then...
    - Review the results and determine what to do next

Have a plan of attack and...

Have a daily to do list and get busy - task by task.

    Hi

I had the same problem 12 months ago.

My solution was to find a mentor I trusted (so many B.S. income claims in IM)
    and follow their methods.

Do not allow yourself to be distracted (unsubscribe from all IM mailing lists to avoid chasing the latest 'must have' offers)

Do your 'productive work' BEFORE reading your emails or visiting forums.

    I hope this helps.

I most definitely suffered from information overload when I first started out with this! I still get a twinge of it every now and then. There's SO much information out there, on so many different aspects of IM, that it's hard to know where to start. I found, though, that when I just decided to stop trying every single technique I read about and focus on the one or two that really resonated with me personally (in my case, blogging and site flipping), that I became much more motivated to take action. Once I took action, I became more motivated to keep taking action, because I saw results from my efforts and wanted to increase those results.

Everyone has their own "thing" that they really love and/or are really good at. Find that, focus on it, and you'll find your way through the jungle of information out there!

    I also agree.

There is so much information about IM!

The best thing to do is:

    1. Do some research about who a good teacher is
    2. Get their program
    3. Stick to it!

Just check the warriorforum threads and you'll find a few reputable IM teachers who are not SCAMS!

That's what I did and I'm making a few sales already (it's been 1 month since my site has been up and 5 weeks since I STARTED on the course).

I got scammed a few times as well. But luckily I found someone who was good and reputable!

I urge you to do the same!

I can sympathise with you guys. It was a long time ago now that I've got started in all this but even now sometimes when I've tried to research something new IE experience difficulty in finding the relevant information and the problem is you have to go through so much that is irrelevant to find out what you really looking for. It is so difficult with so much choice out there today and so much that you need to learn but you must concentrate on answering one question of time in your mind.

I think the problem with earning money online is that until you have the knowledge to do everything that you need to do you have to two tons of research and if you're not careful you get so distracted from doing what you actually should be doing in order to build your income online which is building content. I believe the best thing to do is to divide your day up into periods of time devoted to research, admin, traffic building, content writing etc...

For the meantime Just research areas that are needed to get you going immediatelly and ignore the others. Everything else will come in time.

If you need help with understanding video marketing then research that specific topic. If you need a better understanding of article marketing them focus your research on that aspect of your learning.

    Just dive in.

The information here is invaluable but you dont need all of it. It's a nice springboard, but youll really learn how to do this when you start trying and learning from your own mistakes.

I sell physical products online. I plan to somehow create info products in my niche this year, to diversify my income.

A good place to do research if you want to sell physical stuff is to take a look on ebay to see what some of the companies with shops are selling.

When I was looking for ideas, I started by listing out all the things such as hobbies and interests that I had. Then I just did some research to see how easy it would be to sell something related to it.

I think info products are great if you can create them, and if there is a market for them. But there is a time commitment obviously.

Anyway, I wanted the physical goods approach to start off with and the items had to be small enough so that they could be packaged up easily and shipped in the mail. None of mine weigh more than 2kgs and so shipping is not really a hassle.

I think getting traffic is vital and being able to research the right keywords and slowly but surely building websites and creating a list of people with whom you can interact.

I have quite a lot of domains and some were just dormant for years, until I actually did something with them.

One of the key things I did was get STARTED.

Over the last few years, I signed up for a number of reseller hosting accounts and just made many little crappy sites with a dozen or so pages on them. This was done in my spare time over aperiod of months. I created a few links for each site and then got google to at least get them in the search engines.

Then eventually, I started returning to the most poular sites and building a proper website with more interesting articles and shopping carts etc.

By getting them setup initially over the last few years, it got them into the search engines and I wasn't starting each website totally from scratch. So the sites were a little bit aged and then when I put the real effort into each one, I think it helped with my google rankings more quickly.

Anyway, just decide to get something done. Give yourself a target. Seven days to do some initial research and to at least get a mini site built and live, with a bit of work on creating a few links to it.

Just getting something done will give you a buzz.

Some of the people I have learnt from include, Jeff Johnson, Howie Schwarz, Stomping The Search Engine 2 and a huge library of books I have at home. If there is something I want to find out about, I don't hesitate in spendind 20 or 30 dollars to get a book on it. I must easily spend a thousand dollars a year on books and mini courses, but it is worth it.

Sometimes, there can be more useful data in a $30 book than a $500 course. But so long as you get started and keep the wheels turning you will eventually find something that is successful and also that you enjoy.

      Good luck.
