I'm sure everyone has a different view on this but here is 5 things a newbie should known/have. There is more, but you asked for 5.

    1) Have an actually plan
    2) Be consistent in your actions
    3) Don't disregard a proven traffic method just because it didn't work for you the first time you used the method
    4) Learn some copy writing skills, and basic website creation skills
    5) affiliate products are great, but you should have in your plan to have your own products.

      1. Learn how to evaluate your opportunity costs. If you pursue A, you'll lose time, and that time could be used for B. If you feel A is more precious than B, by all means, follow A.

      2. Learn all about conversions. If you can't copywrite, don't attempt it yourself until you've mastered it. Hire someone else.

      3. Learn all about SEO, onpage, offpage. At least try to get one site in the lower competition niches up to #1 before setting off in a higher note.

      4. Do not believe anything anyone has told you, myself included. There are kind people out there, certainly, but the only way to know for sure is to test it out yourself, or see some solid evidence before carrying out advice.

      5. Learn about all the mistakes people do, and never repeat them. For example, do not discard your traffic sites. Continuously tweak, and tweak until your conversions hit the roof. Similarly, for any other venture you do in IM.

If you want a speed train to success, email me at edward.thomes-at-hotmail.com

1-Learn to sell when not face to face. If you cannot get past that, nothing else will make up for it. (Except outsourcing a good copywriter).
2-Discipline yourself to work everyday until business gets off the ground.
3-Learn how to get traffic.... other than from search engines.
4-learn how to find a dire need for a lot of people that is hard to find a solution to.
5-Research and provide a solution for them.

(But that is the easy way. )

      1) Approach it as a business and know what your business goals are, are they specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and can they be achieved in the timeframe you expect.

      2) Do your research before building anything.

      3) Stick to proven traffic building methods.

      4) Don't expect to make a million dollars overnight, like any business it takes commitment, consistent focussed action and hard work. Don't get sucked into buying the latest strategy or get rich quick tool, there are no shortcuts.

      5) Depending on what you will be doing learn basic copywriting, basic seo, basic traffic building methods, basic website design (All of this can be outsourced if you are no good at it, just be careful who you choose).

      6) Participate in this forum, there is a wealth of knowledge here.

    1. A Free Plan to build a website or blog
    2. Search engine optimization
    3. Article writing/marketing
    4. Backlink Building
    5. List Building

Now, let's get one thing straight, newbies should learn one thing at a time until they have a good grip on it before they move on. If you learn how to build a website/blog and to market it with article marketing and SEO, then you can move on to backlinks and list building. Only take on what you can handle and do not overload your brain.

Aside from constant researching and learning which goes without question, I'd say the most important at start is to take by heart that:

    1. It is absolutely possible to earn good money online
    2. It takes work, time and investment.

As for 5 things you should learn first:

    1. Basic stuff about domains, hosting and website design
    2. How to drive traffic to your website (SEO and other methods)
    3. Autoresponders and how they work
    4. Building a list of targeted prospects
    5. Creating and delivering valuable and relevant content to your visitors and/or subscribers

This is a great post! The 5 things that I think are the most important for any newbie to know are these:

    1. MINDSET
-Hands down the most important piece of success with IM. Mindset is everything, epically if you are a newbie. It can be so easy to get down and discouraged when a project or campaign doesn't work out the way you had planned...And if you are serious about starting a IM business you will have your up and downs, weather your making $100/m or 1M/m you will have discouraging times. But with a solid mindset you will be able to learn and gain data from those failed attempts and continue forward towards your goal!

    2.PLANNING
-Plan your work and work your plan. That simple, you must have a plan of action, even you do not know how you are going to do every detail, just have some soft of outline to refer too.

    3. OUTSOURCE
-You either have TIME or MONEY. In most cases newbies just have time very and little money. Just remember you can always get more money but you can never get more time! You MUST outsource simple tedious tasks that take up to much of your time. Work "on" your business NOT "in" your business!

    4. ACTION
-You have to be taking HUGE action every single day! Action = Results, PERIOD. As long as you are taking action, different opportunities, resources, ideas, products will start to pop up all round you! Try it if you do not believe me

    5. HAVE FUN
-You really have to have fun doing this or like most of us IM junkies you have to LOVE it. Whoever said making money online was easy and glamorous differently forgot to mention all of the hard work and countless hours spent that goes into building a successful online business. If you dont love doing this and dont have fun doing this, you will not last long and probably not make a single penny.

Anyways I know Im rambling, but Making money online is not as easy as do this and that, it requires passion! It is a psychological business!

    Personally I'm taking this approach...

    1. Create or Buying rights to products
    2. Building a list
    3. Finding affiliates (not got this far yet)

And just going to focus hard on these three things... they'll compliment and all earn money.

I'm personally drawn to email marketing more than anything else so I'd like that to become my main area of speciality... writing emails suits my attention span and they're good fun to do.

Wow.. to restrict what one needs to do to a list of any size is seemingly easy and universal; list building, site building/management, SEO, creating or finding quality products to promote (monetize)...

    BUT

the devils in the details. There's a thousand different opinions on how to proceed with our small list. I mean just look at the size and activity on this one single forum dealing with your question alone?!

    I will say, that if there were a few top points I would give and even follow myself they would be;

Never stop learning...the world of internet marketing is constantly mutating : )

Be persistent...try and stick it out with one strategy at a time before moving onto the the next firestorm process

    and

most of all, do not believe for one second your going to have a 4-hour work week just yet... that will take time and seems to be the holy grail of IM'ers everywhere, me included!

I'm not going to make a list per se for various reasons -- but the single most important factor is having a Plan. (Working that Plan is second.)

      1) Find an untapped "niche" w/ Google Keyword Tool
      2) Copy & Paste list of Keywords from "niche" into GoDaddy Bulk Registration
      3) Buy best domain name available for "niche"
      4) Set up WordPress site and create SEO friendly content for "niche"
      5) Set up Autoresponder Opt-in Form to build a list and capture leads for "niche"

After all of this, you should have an E-mail List and WordPress site that are ready to be monetized w/ Affiliate links, CPA ads, etc.

There are not really five things to learn. Some of the most successful online marketers - and I'm not talking about Joe Blow who makes millions of amazon sites - I'm talking people like Yanik Silver etc learned & mastered only two things:

    -Copywriting
    -Traffic Generation

and that second one is possibly optional. I know Yanik lets his affiliates worry about the second bit.

    This way is almost foolproof...

    1. Find a business coach or a mentor to personally help and guide you. They would be someone who is already doing what you want to be doing (this is what I did).

    2. With the help of your business coach formulate a plan of action and stick to it as close as possible but allow some flexibility.

    3. Always be looking at how simple you can make things (entrepreneurs are very good at making the simple complicated, which gets in the way of sales).

    4. Make sure your plan includes list building and email marketing.

    5. Make sure your plan includes selling multiple products to the same group of people at different price points. (It's easier to sell to people who have already bought from you than it is to find new customers).
