Hi,

I'm just curious if news blogs like mashable.com and businessinsider.com pay their writers or are they writing for free like they do at huffington post? And if they do, what are the going rates?

Which leads me to another conundrum - how do they get people to write for them for free? That is beyond me.

I have not heard about them so far. Anyhow thanks for letting me know about them. I shall check. If it is worth trying then it should be fine.

They most likely pay their writers/journalists, but you can also submit stories for free (may or may not get accepted).

I imagine that to write for Mashable professionally, you would need to fill in an application in response to a job opening. Probably the same with the other site.

Huffington Post also hires and pays a lot of journalists and relies less on free writers now that AOL has bought them.

I would think you'd feel like somewhat of a dunce, exposure notwithstanding, if you dutifully turned in free articles, then the company leveraged your free labor into building a site they sold for $315 million.

You don't have to feel like a dunce if writing for them brought you hundreds of thousands of targeted visitors to your website and you made money off them.
