How do you build a targeted list quickly and free?

I've had an auto responder for two weeks now, and I've put it in the sidebar of my site, which I've had for a month now.

I'm completely new to having my own website, and trying to build a list to sell my products and services to.

I used the free wp auto responder plugin, is that ok? It seems to work alright.

I'm giving away a free ebook as incentive to join, and will continue to add value and build trust (hopefully), but I've only had one confirmed subscriber.

Should I make pages specifically designed to capture email addresses, or just write on my site, and have it in the sidebar?

How do I get traffic faster, without paying for ads? I know a bit of SEO, I'm tweeting and sharing and publishing lots of content, is there something I'm missing? Have I picked a tough niche in internet marketing? My site is in the signature, please advise.

You can build a squeeze page and offer some free report there. Of course you`ll have to rank that page. I rather pay some $ per month for that than do the ranking myself.

I think that your opt-in form doesn`t stand out enough. Make it more visible

The trick is "perceived value".... they have to see value in giving up their name and email...There are tons of free e-books and it is hard to just say "sign up and get your free e-book".... you must convince them that your book will be beneficial and they can't live without it!

Ad value to the sign up process...free stuff, bonuses, etc.

Plenty of truth in what you have said

Wise words drumguru69 . Very wise words.

It is easy to get the right people to subscribe if you tell what your free ebook will do for them . how your free report will solve their problem

Before I answer your question -"How do you build a targeted list quickly and free? ", I want to say free and quick don't often go together

if you are want to quick , be willing to pay for it because there is more incentive for others to act when you give them some dollars

anyhow , to answer your question
      - if you have a buddy of yours that has a huge list of 100k subscribers , you can build a list very fast because they could potentially promote for you for nothing
      - Alternatively , you could create a $17 product to sell and recruit affiliates end you the traffic . You build your buyers list and make some cash . It is free But it is not fast

Most people you approach would say no but you get what you want if you persist in contacting potential affiliates

I agree with Femi that free and quick don't usually go together. For traffic, you can only get:
        • Free and high quality BUT slow
        • Free and quick BUT low quality
        • Quick and high quality BUT you have to pay for it
The ONLY one free and relatively quick way to get traffic is probably guest posting on authority blogs in your niche. But you'd have to spend a huge amount of time and effort writing high quality content.

If you can churn out several high quality content quickly and find enough authority blogs to accept your guest posts in a month, then you can safely expect to achieve 500-1000 subscribers in a month using just this tactic.

By the way, build a squeeze page first and link to it from your author's bio. Also, make sure the topics of your guest posts are highly relevant to the topic of your free eBook. This will increase the subscription rate greatly.

        Hope this helps.

        Cheers~

Create An IFO (Irrasitable Free Offer) Then Create A Squeeze Page Modify The squeeze pages Headlines and create 3 pages. Hook the pages on to Google Optimizer To See which converts best.

If you use a opt-in on your website. Make sure its on all pages. Test have shown that best place to put an optin box is the right side ABOVE. Very Important that you do this. Also make sure that you use graphics for the optin box. Show them a picture of your free report.

Last but bot least. You offer has to be of great content or otherwise you will lose them in the backend. Take some time and create a good report.

Reports are maximum 15 pages and make sure that everything is easy to understand. Teach the propesct the What and Why of what you are offering but not the HOW.

As for Traffic: The best ways are Article Marketing, Uploading Free reports to pdf sharing sites, Video Marketing. All the free ways work.

I've just learned to use Filezilla to upload html pages directly to my server, I'm thinking of using Open Office to design the squeeze pages, is that OK for SEO? Is it OK to have pages on your site which aren't linked to the main part in any way? Is there a better way to get free squeeze page templates, or a better free html editor for a Mac?

If I made a squeeze page on Open Office, or some other text editor, I couldn't use the All in one seo pack to add a description, and tags, so what I'd really like is a blank sales page template with only a title, and nothing else, which I could use as a seperate theme on my site, using the page theme plugin. Would it be hard to make such a template myself, by editing an existing sales page template and uploading it as a zip file? Or would it be easier to learn how to imitate the source code of my other pages in my html file to have a description and tags?

You can join forums related to your niche and post a link to the squeeze page in your signature. That's one of many ways to get free traffic.

    One word? FBLeadGeneration - lol

Okay, that's like 3 words all mashed up into one.

Here's the thing I learned after building a mobile+email list now approaching 100,00 (combined).

There are (2) things that affect how targeted your list is:
    1) Traffic, yes
    2) The opt in gift!!!

Many people - perhaps only the top 1-5% of list owners - get this.

People initially get on your list so that they can get your opt in bribe.

Well if you do your thinking ahead of time, you will create a bribe that is more likely to put a buyer on there than a browser!

This is so important - I hope anyone struggling with this gets it!!

You want sale and you want them now right?!

Well create an optin incentive that gets people on your list who are in "buying heat" - this is the next best thing to a buyer's list.

Also, you can increase your sales by getting to know who's already on your list.

    Are they male or female?
    Young or Old?
In the USA, UK, Canada, NZ or someplace else?
Are they popular - do they have alot of social influence?

Once you know that you can start sending people information they actually want to read!
And, ultimately offers that they're interested in and they will buy.

I mean if you send a woman an offer on men's golfing shoes, chances are she won't be interested will she? lol

Or, if you send a group of older subscribers offers on say a teenie bopper pink ipad deal, chances are they will look over to that delete button and maybe down at the bottom of that page and hit "unsubscribe..."

Bottom line is once you find out who your audience is you can market to them in a target, personalized way which means HIGHER LIFETIME VALUE.

That means in "plain speak" more repeat sales and overall profits.

Hope that helps - think and grow your list!

ok so let me first explain this, if it is free then it wont be quickly, if you dont spend money, you spend time, the best way i know and that i actually use to generate free traffic is facebook, but if you also want to know a way to get people on a list spending some money... then the best way is with solo ads.

    Hi rowanman28,
I will start with telling you to make sure you opt-in box is "above the fold" (meaning you can see it immediately on your page, you don't have to move the courser.) Next you can do some article marketing (Ezine and Article Base) to build some free traffic. Make sure your links in the article point back to your squeezepage. After that, take some of the content from the articles and submit it to Press release sites. (Pr.com, Prweb and Prleap) Or create new content if you link and submit, either or. Lastly, take the articles and turn them into videos and use tube-mogul to submit to a targeted audience. You can also use Traffic Geyser if you like to do the same thing but to save cash use TubeMogul (Follow TubeMogul guidelines or get banned.)
You should see results in about 3-8 weeks, (average for me) sometimes faster, depends on your writing skills and luck; if you will, lol :-) Hope this helps.

remember its not the size of your list but the quality in the list that matters...If you have 10,000 that barely opens your email then whats the point...JUst as much as you focus on getting them also set up a strategy for retention and management..

A lot of people don't think of using mobile. You can have people text a specific keyword to a short code and then provide an incentive if they text in their email address. That way you've just created a quick list of mobile numbers and email addresses.

OK, lots of ideas here. I was thinking of putting a squeeze page on a traffic exchange, and clicking the button on my iPad in bed. I got a free html squeeze page which I edited, and uploaded to my server directly, and so I want to promote that. I think it looks pretty good. I guess I do need to add more value to the auto-responder. I don't know about paying for traffic, as I haven't got any money just yet, and it may take me a long time to learn how to sell to a list effectively.

Think about what you're saying for a half a minute... Okay times up! Clicking on links in a traffic exchange in hopes to get subscribers is a waste of time in my opinion.

Here's why: Everyone else on that traffic exchange became a member for one reason and one reason only and it sure wasn't to look at all those wonderful offers.

They joined the traffic exchange for the same reason you did... to build their list. Now, do you think those other people will be paying attention to your website? I think not...

In the beginning it's a slow road but as you go along you start building momentum. When you have things setup and it looks good; no fancy graphics required; but it has to be well laid out and make sense to visitors.

If you put together the right offer then try paid advertising to get subscribers initially, until you reach a point where you can start doing JV deals with others.

If you're offering a service then it makes total sense to make select JV deals with others and give them 100% commissions on the initial sale in the beginning, for a good number of sales.

During this time you are building a list of buyers.

You can then turn around and offer more of your services and additional services on an ongoing basis to that list.

That's how you get the ball rolling... You are also building up credibility within your marketing space.

PS. If your first reaction is 'GASP' to giving up 100% commissions then you're on the right track! Everyone at one time or another had to create an unbelievable offer. An offer so unpredictable it's insane.

PPS. Make sure you can deliver on the offer you make! If you blow it ... it's hard to recover.

On top of everything that's been said, I would recommend PopUp Domination. A lot of warriors disagree with having popups on your site but I personally don't mind an opt-in popup. Besides, they work!

OK, so I don't really have the money to pay anything to get subscribers. I have 15,000 Twitter followers, I guess I could make a really good squeeze page, or ten, and schedule recurring tweets, while paying a little for a weekly subscription of seeds from Twiends. I have two subscribers now. I know traffic exchanges don't work well, but I have signed up to a couple of lists there myself. I think I'll try the SEO route as well, and make the subscription form look more appealing.

Graphics play a great role in inducing the visitor to get into. Are your graphics catchy?

The another thing is value. Look at your website as a visitor, not the owner. Will YOU enter your email address out of curiousty to get the free ebook?

Are there similar e-books on the internet which can be downloaded free of cost WITHOUT signing up? If yes, then people would avoid signing up on your website and would prefer downloading straight!

Granted social media traffic is completely targeted, more and more webmasters are now making a shift to using services like stumbleupon.

Get a squeeze page, offer something for free, stumble it in the appropriate category and you might get some traffic and quick opt ins.

building a proper list is going to cost money bro. Unles you can find a pool of free traffic it look likes you might be buying it. Traffic exchanges are the last place to do it. Try looking at facebook or twitter traffic for starters.

Yeah, I have gotten tons of views from my Twitter followers, and from StumbleUpon, and I'm starting to do better in Google. I have gotten over a million views over the last two years on articles and blogs. Now that I have my own site, I can hopefully hang on to my visitors. I've made a couple of squeeze pages, not much content on them, will it be hard to get those to do well in a Google search? Still don't know if the question is fully answered, I need traffic from Google and other free places, or really cheap, and then I need advice on what to sell or how long after offering value and building trust that I wait to sell, and then what do I sell? Any ideas on affiliate products, I don't know much about cpa, it's all fairly new to me, but I got three subscribers now.

You have to be creative, if possible look for other incentives.

    Ebooks seem overdone,

    nonetheless, they still do work.

Also consider a sqeeze page. The main focus of such page would be to gather info.
